Hard list, there are so many games from childhood till now that I remember with pleasure... I would have to make a really heavy effort to collect every game's name that I trully enjoyed inside my old brain... I'll try anyway.
For board games, I would say chess, and a RPG like called Hero Quest, which I played so much with my best friends when I was little.
My favourite kind of game is surely the RPG genre, with medieval fantasy being by far my favourite "scenario". I don't read one in years, but back in the day, I was addicted to the Fighting Fantasy books. Later I discovered it was a phenomenon around many countries, but in Brazil they were really hard to find, and for me those were rare jewels. I still clearly remember the first one I read, City of Thieves, which had all I hoped for - lots of life, movement, interaction and adventures. The later books started loosing some of their power, but those first ones were really inspired. In the end, I had about 12 books, I gave away the ones I didn't like but kept and still browse sometimes the really good ones.
But for a quick list:
- Shadowrun (both the RPG game, and the Sega Genesis videogame - I really like it's dark and chaotic future scenario).
- Flashback (Sega Genesis - really inspirred futuristic rpg game, wonderful work).
- Vendetta (Arcade), Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis) (I just loved side scrolling 'beat them up', specially when they were really interactive and creative).
- Hexen, Heretic, Heretic 2 (this series brought me to pc gaming).
- Prince of Persia (goo'ol memories).
- Betrayal in Antara.
- Dragon Lore 2 (I recognize it has many flaws, but like City of Thieves it has all that I really like about rpg - lots of interaction, life and feelings - it was not about slay monster, but take on a real role, live a fantasy life).
I could say many more, but for now those are all I can remember. Living in Portugal and away from everyone I played those games with, a guy can get really sad by looking at the list... <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt=":cry:" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: -->

Wow, Heroquest is a board game I liked a lot too, my domestic animal still has it. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> OK if I'm already typing this, I try to make a list, though I can't really put it together without thinking a lot more, so it'll surely be missing a lot of games:
Board games:
Heroquest, Axies & Allies
Computer games:
Civilization, Die Siedler, Heretic, Hexen, DOOM, Betrayal in Antara, Warcraft series, Unreal 1 & UT 1, Dark Forces, Outlaws, DSA trilogy... from this, all I still have is Heretic, Betrayal in Antara, Warcraft III (basically for multiplayer games with buddies so that we can play strategy), UT (though I haven't played it for years except for LAN with buddies), and Hexen (which I only have because of KH, I haven't played it in many years else).
Outdoors games:
There are many and they can be the most fun type in the end... I don't mean sports but chasing each other or hide & seek or circle games etc.

What about everyone armed with supersoakers? If I ever seriously play outside on a hot day, it'd be that, though I would only want to play it in a place with plenty of obstacles.
I don't prefer paintball or NERF, because nerf darts can get lost, and paintball is....paint. AND HURTS

I've played Q1 and finished it. Q2 I have on N64, but I don't play it - rarely anyway, mostly just for multiplayer games. I don't have Q3.

I played Q1 back in '96/'97 only because it was "the" thing to play with the supposedly revolutionary new engine and all, and also because I was a DOOM/Heretic/Hexen fan (same reasons why I played Hexen II as well, another bad investment of frustrated time). I hated it from the beginning... because of this, I was largely uninterested in Q2 and tried it only a year or two after it came out and was surprised that it's a LOT better than Q1, it had a lot more of the old fast'n'furious FPS feeling of DOOM. I played it through completely maybe once or twice and partially a couple more times, and it was not that bad (the music helped a lot too, I hated Q1's ambience music while Q2 had good metal riffs here and there with a bit of techno, IMO the best kind of music for such an FPS). Then I got Q3 and I was amazed how much fun a Quake game can be, the graphics were great for that time (which can't be said from the first two Quakes) and bot AI for deathmatch was very good. We've played hours of nonstop team deathmatch with the domestic animal and each a team of bots, and it was a lot of fun. In the end UT proved to be a good fun for longer since I still have it and sold my Q3 ages ago, but still I got the least fun out of Q1 and the most ouf of Q3, pretty much the opposite of the majority out there from what I've read.

Right now i am totally dazed with Dungeon Keeper, old game though. Definetly a game everyone should try... in breef: strategy game (in which you can use a creature a make it fps) in which you are the bad guy and you have to built your dungeon and summon creatures to crush anyone who opposes you. The things that make this game awesome are things like getting the corpses of battle and let them rot un prison to return as a skeleton (or even a vampire), or torturing... well, anyone <!-- s:twisted: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt=":twisted:" title="Twisted Evil" /><!-- s:twisted: -->

Guess EA/Bullfrog was a bit lazy on the localization back then, it sold best in the US and the UK. They had to make a sequel because of that <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P -->
Shame not many heard of it, then again not many has played Crusader, Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games or even Demon's Crest for that matter (or most recently, Gore: Ultimate Soldier). And that's why I love

If you happen to see Dungeon Keeper on sale anywhere, get it, because I highly recommend that game! Amulets & Armor: That's a quite interesting looking game, CheapAlert, what's the story on this one? Another Doom-based rpg game that didn't make it to see the light of sucess (somewhat like Strife)?
There's also an awesome RPG that I like very much - Betrayal at Krondor. Check out this page - the game is officially abandonware (it was up till recently even downloadable from Sierra's site itself), and you can find a link for the full version on there:

Yesh. but Amulets & Armor is extremely obscure. It's hard to find others who have played it. (I.e. I found NO-ONE :O)
I've completed BAK in 1994 <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> and started replaying it in 2002 though I only bothered to work up to Chapter 2 <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> really fun though.

Dead or Alive 3... maybe even 4 if i'll ever get xbox 360... i'm not getting one unless i know i can mod it... i've already lost cd's to scratches and questionable stains of pb/j cause of my little brother, so not risking anything too expensive... but other than that, i play DoA 3 with my friend just about every time we can reach an xbox (mine or hers), and it adds up to... at least 10 hrs per week. and next week, when i'll see her again, we're gonna play it about 10 hrs a day until school starts, lol.

Usually people say Oblivion is much less atmospheric, also there are sayings about some stupid bugs in physics system like "thrown apple can destroy whole house".

It does seem like the time for technology investments on RPGs has trully arrived. I guess they really are popular today, I remember to see throughout the years all major rpg games being limited to simplistic/non-expensive engines because they expected the game would never be able to respond big investments in terms of sale amount - they just were not popular enough, not like sports games (like FIFA), car games or FPS.
This way they had to focus mainly on writting, which isn't a bad thing. I confess however some of the current RPGs look amazing, I never play any of them due to system limits, but watching some of those you have to wonder how much the graphics have evolved.
Saw this game the other day, this does seem to be a great game being developed.
Maybe this one will become a future favourite for me, I must say I read the interview with the team leader and everything sounded perfect, maybe too good to be true?

Never knew you guys were so touchy about big images, it's not like it's that hard to control the scrolling bars, both vertical and horizontal... I'll edit the post anyway.
As for graphics: I never implied we should do something like that for our mods, it's not our purpouse. I pointed this game mainly because it has an extremely realistic world (notice the differance between realistic and eye-candy), and the game's goal is exactly to be a very realistic game, apart of course from that fact it's a fictuous time and space. I think if you read the producer's interview, you will see that this is a different game (at least from all I've seen), they have some very interesting objectives, but anyway...
EDIT: Done. BTW if you guys can't be impressed by that kind of work (believe, I try my hand at computer graphics, that's hard to come by), I don't know what could impress you...

Well, I wish to add that I think that usually games' content develop asynchronous. Either grpahics&sounds or genre-specific content outruns the rest. Today its the multimedia features, but I am sure that time will pass and we'll receive great RPGs with deep atmosphere based on modern 3d engines.

I understand. I guess as a visual artist, and therefore because you draw stuff and not me, you can better appreciate the hard work and skill it takes to make graphics like that. Not only in the scenery and the sprites/models, but also in the way they interact and blend to create a genuine 3D environment. Don't worry, I really enjoy those screenshots, but I feel that I need to say something a bit more explanatory than that or else I'm just not being very helpful. I've only played Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker, and personally Ocarina is my favourite. Majora was just too confusing for me I remember, and Wind Waker I didn't really enjoy the graphics and the plot. Just do a search with the name of the game next to the term ROM - most rom hosting websites also have a section with popular emulators for all consoles, specially Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) and Super Nintendo (Super Famicon (sp?)). The reasoning is that if you have the original game, it is not illegal to play the rom image, but where the hell did that come from??? Never read that in any copyright terms... <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> I for one think playing those classic games still today is a great way to honour all the work and talent put into them.

I remember playing several games from Nintendo or some other (do not remember), emulator was called SNES. They were very cool.
One was about an Evolution, you played a creature which were able to gather "evolution points" and buy some features like better tail, legs etc, you start as puny little fish, first part is underwater, then you become a lizard, then a dinosaur etc. Funny, there were different paths of evolution.

That impression may appear because of its beginning. I liked how Morrowind started - you were given a chance to live in a town for a whie and accomodate yourself with a world. Oblivion starts with fighting... it is very similar to Arena's beginning. You are sitting i the prison ceil, then descent into the dungeons and fight rats, zombies (1 copy <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> ) and goblins. Maybe when I'll see human civilization at last I change my opinion, I dunno.
As extra minus - I don't like its UI much, but this may be first-time problem.
There are many funny things, though. First is how you create a character. You choose its head form, face color etc. There are several dozens of parameters depicting his appearance. An easy way to make yourself a freak <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
Secondly - physics. You may catch hanging chains and make them swing naturally, smashing in each other.
There was also curious moment about other creature's behavior. I was fighting rats for a while. Then following event happened. I was walking down some tunnel and two rats appeared. They were running straight to me. I preapred to defend, but they rushed past me. Well, ok, Oblivion is a really beautifull game (I'd said fantastically beautiful if my PC could run it in highest quality mode <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> ).
I do not think it is less autmospheric because of designers' fault, it simply has more common enviroment than Morrowind, it is looking like ordinary europian medieval country, with dense settlement system; thus it is much less mysterious than Morrowind's land.
It seems to me that map is about same size as Morrowind, but it is much more passable, plus you may ride horse and this makes travel even faster (bad thing you almost cannot do anything while riding - no fighting - no talking, a real minus to the game).
Dialog system is now more similar to Strife, with limited number of replicas.

It's a very good RPG, it's not too difficult to set up your character (I don't like very complex RPGi), and the story is very good, after playing Arx Fatalis I never found any other good RPG games that really interested me in this way, and never played any other games that got me addicted to them as fast as this one <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->. Arx Fatalis is a lot like Stonekeep, just more modern technology. I actually liked Stonekeep better, but that's more of a taste question. The one thing missing from AF vs SK is the group, in SK you've got 3 NPCs who fight on your side and talk funny crap half the time. In AF you are alone like in an FPS. OTOH one of the very greatest moments of all my computer gaming history was the goblin kitchen, I loved it insanely, I spent hours in there just watching and listening (and baking my own apple pies of course and eating them), it was such a very very special experience, really one of a kind.

CW what you describe is not so special IMO, already ES II: Daggerfall (Oblivion is ES IV) had deep stuff of this kind, I remember that when I got bored with the game after a time, I started kiling civilians, then when I got captured and had to stay in the jail for months after I got out I killed some more, after a couple of times when I got out of jail I was approached by the assassins guild, inviting me to join them. And Morrowind was a LOT more complex than Daggerfall (or maybe it wasn't, I just never finished Daggerfall because it sucked too much).

Hey I got nothing wrong with a little cinematic (no more than 4 minutes each) in the beginning, end, or anywhere in between to set the mood and get the blood pumping, but when it gets to the point that most of fingers' times are spent off the controller, that's when it becomes obvious that modern console games lack so much gameplay that they compromise it with movies. Half-hour movie in a game is excusable only as an epilogue.

I've never played Stonekeep, I'll try to search for it and give it a try too.
As for cinematics in games, I think as Cheapy, all of the console games are just cinematics, sometimes even using the game engine, other times they are just a bunch of CGI's which don't even allow the player to see what the engine has to offer, sometimes game programmers do this because their engines are so limited that if the whole game could be played it would be more boring than how it is with cinematics <!-- s:? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!-- s:? --> .

BTW I just recently installed Oblivion, though sadly I think it's either my processor (Turion 64) or graphics card (ATI Radeon Xpress 200M) that chopping and hacking gameplay. <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> At minimum video settings it looks far worse than even Quake, but the game flows very smoothly. At first stages I tried to increase graphics quality as far as it is possible with my machine, simply to see what it will look like. Also, I decided to play on the highest possible difficulty. If you want my opinion 4th Class, I wouldn't go for the most expensive card out there, there should be cheaper options that aren't that old, or you could buy a generic card, which is cheaper and uses newer graphical chips <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->.

Well a Radeon X800 or a GeForce 6800 will still cost you quite a sum. I mean, you either want to use a moderately priced computer OR you want to enjoy the max quality details of the latest games like Oblivion or Prey, there's no middle way.

Speaking of graphical cards there's NO middle way, yeah, but speaking of a WHOLE computer, there's a middle way IMO, you can have a cool processor that runs very fast, but a not so new video card, that won't make the best performance for games, surely, but you'll have a decent running computer for everything else <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->.

Frankly I think in 4th they lost authentity, plus in was made in 3D (as Grim Fandango) and controls were not very convenient.
