UT rocks!

RambOrc

Just reinstalled UT this Monday and played some and tonight once again, as far as I care this game doesn't show its age at all (compared to e.g. Painkiller, the graphics are not THAT different). And hey its gameplay is unbeatable (well until KA 1.0 comes out, LOL j/k). Had real fun in the Peak Monastery, at one point I had 4 HP and no armor but had a Flak and I thought well why give up (I have this attitude to FPS ever since I killed my first Baron of Hell in DOOM with 6 HP), and I killed two or three more fuckers until I was hit at last and LOL I thought I'm going to die but instead my HP went down to 2. Shot another one and then someone got me, but hey.

And don't forget this handy must-want driver, optimized for the video cards of today: http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/ UT never dies for me Also it used to freeze so often on a Kyro2, which is why I didn't play UT all that much in 2001-2003... (except with that opengl driver, but it was released late enough for me to switch to my Geforce2 so it was a bit late for me then) Also here's another reason why I still play my UT [img:11itp8lo]http://fragfiles.org/datas/users/4-fbut9.jpg[/img:11itp8lo] OMG I HAVE 3 LIFE TOO NOW ITS TIME TO TAKE THIS TRAIN DOWN TO FUNKY TOWN

LOL nice guy on the pic... as for the link, I run UT in D3D because Matrox cards are still better with that one.

LOL like him? It's our pal Firebrand from these forums! There's different gargs, as seen in the back back there. There's a crapload of skins for it there's so much variety around for it. unfortunately he's not released yet, plus he requires Bonus Pack 4 because he uses the recently-added skeletal animation system.

Well BP 4 is several years old and is free, so that's not a prob.

I also like this game a lot, the first time I played it was a nice experience and I hook to every version that is out (UT, 2003, 2004).
LOL like him? UT 2003 was a big disappointment for me, so I still play the original one. Haven't tried the 04 version yet, I don't think my 3D card is up to it.
Wed, 08 Sep 2004 22:11:12

Firebrand

That's true, I have to buy a new video card to play UT 2003, I felt the same the first time I played it tough, but it has become something more normal for me now (I think it's something you have to get used to), the changes on the gameplay and the graphics for it were strange.
Why i don't have that skin?? 1. Knees aren't fixed (on the skin) 2. Cuffs too small 3. Very few colors on the skin (like 12?!) 4. Sound in the default properties keeps falling back to male player defaults, making me having to open UnrealED and setting each sound manually every time I compile. A bit frustrating there (And yes, i'm using the SVC chaos sounds) 5. I'm not done with all the skins obviously though I do have a beta of the model around somewhere. It's 6mb-ish though so that might be a bit heavy for your 56k. 6. The "arima" skins interfere with the unmodified gargoyle model, so you could pick Firebrand's skins on the unintended gargoyle mesh 7. I am lazy. However it mostly works, and the skin tweaks is all that's left to do. Oh and ut2003 sucks, though ut2004 kinda put my faith back into Epic Games again.... played ut2k4 demo for hours and hours with my friends (locally, even!), it's mad fun. Not as much as UT, and hell i'd admit it's a bit more repetitive than UT. Respawn, arm up, get in vehicle, drive vehicle here, shoot incoming things..... onslaught wasn't exactly fun for me, I got tribes for that crap Oh and a Geforce2 is enough for ut2k3/4. Worked fine and dandy on my athlon 950.

Bah, I have Unreal tournement right here (my brother bought it in a promotion, it came along with 2 other games for 20 ?). I have it for months but never installed it - the minimun requirements are very accessible, but the thing is that I can't spare the 710 MB, my pc only has 5 GB, and it's mainly used space... Also, I have this one game called Severance: Blade of Darkness installed and it's the greatest modern game I played this far, and I don't want to delete it. At first I thought it was weird because it had some big weapons ala japanese Mang?, but then I noticed how well built, realistic and extremely beautiful it is, you can clearly see that a LOT of attention and care was put into it. It's extremely addictive. You guys should give it a try ASAP!

710mb? My UT is around 840mb and it's got plenty of extra stuff including the bonus packs, and Unreal 1's maps (yeah, i'm playing Unreal through UT's engine DLLs). I reckon a default installation would weigh around 540mb... (since I last checked it on my laptop)
Wed, 08 Sep 2004 22:57:28

mago

Well, they say they need around 400, but since my pc isn't top quality, I guess I would have to choose for the suggested 710 mb installation.

LOL don't worry mago, I know you have a Voodoo banshee, infact UT has a strong love for Voodoo cards (3dfx Glide driver), so it will run more than just fine You won't be dissapointed. (UT ran awesome on my p2 233 w/ banshee 16mb and SB awe64 on Win98, it also ran well on my k6-2 500MHz w/ Voodoo2 12mb back in the day)
Wed, 08 Sep 2004 23:13:46

Firebrand

Yes, you can make it work fine with your Vodoo card, in fact I first played it with that same card and it ran fine.

2.5 Gb? How could you get it down to so little? did you install only the game engine and loaded game content from the CD?
Thu, 09 Sep 2004 19:17:08

A full UT install is just under a Gb if I remember correctly. then again my 2.5Gb could be off this was a couple of years ago and my memory is bad.
Thu, 09 Sep 2004 19:29:28

1 Gb? That's 125 megs... yep, that's about right, if you install only the engine but nothing else from the CD, then it's about that much.

Just yesterday I got Totally Unreal, and when I installed UT and played it, I was amazed by all the maps that UT has! And how good it is. Now UT is surely my favorite game of all time (Until I try Doom3, maybe)! Although UT goes considerably slow in OpenGL mode, I've forced myself to play it in Software rendering. But I've really not noticed any differences in graphics. And, hey, if anybody could suggest some good Mods (I don't care about size) that'd be good.

The one thing I like in UT2004 (and the only thing I played in it this far) is the mode where you defend the map against waves of classic Unreal monsters.
Thu, 16 Dec 2004 16:11:26

mago

That's an intersting concept. There's somteething similar that I liked to play sometimes, in Aliens versus Predator (guess it was called Skirmish). You were placed inside a map and after a while dozens and dozens of aliens would come after you, in waves. The best thing to do was to seek some kind of place with limited space and open fire from there. But there was no point, they would just keep coming and coming, eventually your ammo would just ran out, or more likely, the damn aliens would just find a hole or force they way through the bullets into the shelter and tear you apart...

Talking from experience with AvP's "stranded" map, I play as a marine, run into the base to stock up on flamethrower and grenade launcher ammo, then circle around the base flaming and blasting away, going back and restock, etc. A bit of monotonous yes, but it's a fun "survival" way with alotta killing

Polished, and released http://skincity.beyondunreal.com Why UT2k4 modeling rocks: - If you can't animate well (like me), there's a nice selection of skeletons to pick from for your model, with already made animations. - You don't have to create "caps" for your model when it gets gibbed, Ut2k4 automatically does it (!) - You don't have to muck around .ini and .int files to get the model to work - You don't have to make LOD meshes yourself, UnrealEd3 automatically generates them! (!) - Karma is cool.
