Trapped in Sacred Grove

Don't know if this is a Korax problem but I've never encountered it before. Entered the Sacred Grove, where usually only have to kill a few Ettins and maybe a couple of lizards before the switch appears on the central column, but this time the enemies just keep coming. Killed off a few Ettins at first and got a message "6 Ettins left" (never saw that before), killed a few more and got a message "11 Ettins left", killed even more and got "16 Ettins left". Now lizards started teleporting in, six or so at a time; every time I kill three or four another half dozen appear. When I've used up my mana, more materializes in the Grove, as do crystal jars. But now, after about 45 minutes playing, the Sacred Grove is littered with lizard remains ...and the switch has yet to appear. Has Korax condemned this character to the Hexen Labors of Sisyphus, eternally damned to stand in this grove and slay lizards? Fortunately I have a save game just before the grove (if it doesn't come to the same fate) but how can I escape this murderous monotony?

You have to kill them all quickly. Otherwise more will start teleporting in. If you take too long to kill them all (including the new ones), the switch will never open and an endless stream of enemies will appear.

Just about every time I go there, I end up killing them all before the first new wave appears. It's not that hard to kill a dozen or so ettins in a confined area like that in the minute or so before they start teleporting in. I just run around shooting everything that moves with the strongest weapon I have at the time.

That's usually what happens to me; there are seldom more than a half dozen Ettins and when most of them are dead a couple of lizards appear, no trouble at all to dispatch them, grab the loot, and leave. But this is ridiculous; they are teleporting in faster than I can send them to their reward (even tried a porkalator on the crowd, but whenever they're down to a couple left about six more appear). Reloaded the save prior to entering the grove and things were normal. Killed six or eight Ettins and two lizards and that was it. Also noted that the teleport remained accessible the entire time (I could leave and return if I wanted to); in my odd save the teleport has vanished, there's just a bare wall there.

Looks like this game is full of glitches. A pity I wasn't here when you were working on it. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Hexen is extremely stable and bug free compared to other similar games.

Think I found the cause of my irritation. Was playing around with console commands and typed "mad", got the same results - an endless stream of adversaries to annihilate. Doesn't happen immediately so it's possible I did this before and forgot about it. Is there a way to turn this off once activated?

I don't think so, the game has it's own scripts and they need to flow as they were designed to, you can't deactivate them in any way.
