I feel a bit like a freeloader here, not really doing very much work for you guys. If there's anything you need to me to do I'd be glad to help. More songs? Map testing?

[quote="Crimson Wizard":2jysnq4t]I don't like music which plays on Ancient Arena map. Actually, I don't think I know which song/map you're talking about. Could you give me the title of the MIDI? [quote="Crimson Wizard":2jysnq4t]And also intro music feels a bit harsh for me. You mean the main menu theme for Korax Arena? The story behind that is back in 2004, I wrote four "candidates" for the theme song. RambOrc was madly in love with and picked the one that's there right now. I've been meaning to try out these new maps, but unfortunately I haven't been able to get the new Vavoom release to work right. Crashes when the VIS files are made. I had an older Vavoom version installed once, but it's got terrible sound maintenance, but at least I could play maps with it.

As for Metal-like tunes, the main problem I see for them is that MIDI format isn't exactly "powerful" enough to render close patterns and drum sounds very well... That's why they have a "raw" feeling, there's no acoustic depth. Actually I was meaning to say this a long time ago, but also right now my pc just isn't able to play MIDI normally lke before, the music gets even more basic sounds, deep sounds are ignored and overall it seems to have forgotten how to play the instruments libraries... Maybe Vavoom plays them separetly, which means I'll get normal quality while playing the game, even if not in Windows meadia... Anyway, this is my personnal preference only, I'm not directing to any music already made or implying changes on current music placement, it's just that I sincerely appreciate longer, melodic tunes, like (my all time favourite) Swamp Town, To the East, Pizzicato, and even darker ones like Entity. I feel they work very very well and exploit every bit of Midi format better characteristics. In fact, I wonder if their notes played by intruments and recorded in more complex formats like WAV or other would acutally play different? Is that possible Class?
Wed, 09 Aug 2006 02:16:38

The 4th Class

It depends on the method of how I convert them from MIDI to WAV. There are 3 main ways I think are most practical: 1) Direct input recording, which means start up an audio track in a MIDI program (I use Cakewalk Home Studio) and basically the song records itself into the audio. The catch here is that the WAV and the MIDI files will sound identical to each other, unless you play the WAV file on a computer that has a superior/inferior sound card. Depending on which one, it can be either an advantage or a disadvantage. 2) Sending the MIDI signals into a digital piano and recording either back into the computer via sound sequencer or into another medium (tape deck, etc.). Most MIDI card in pianos are geared towards live performance, so they'll normally sound more real than computer ones. 3) Having human musicians perform the music with real instruments.

Been an artist is a hard job because you simply CAN'T please everyone's taste, and finding repulsion from others is a terrible blow when you put your heart into that something. Crimson just has his own taste, so do I and anyone else. I think the best thing about Class' work here is that it can reach more than one area of interest, that's very important.

There'll always be people who won't like this or that song, but that doesn't matter - as long as several people on the team like a song, it means that chances are good for most people liking it. The best to do is to have different kinds of songs throughout the game for variety so that everyone finds something cool. p.s. regarding the KA title song, I think it's just about perfect - it differs from the original Hexen title song in a similar way how KA gameplay differs from Hexen gameplay. It is also similarly built as the Hexen title song, but has the added touch that is going to be a halmark of KA: more live or live-sounding rock guitar than in the original Hexen (more like Heretic, which had some pretty hard rock-ish songs).

By the way, Lucas, you said you may do testing as well. Then, if thus happens that you have no work, you may test Korax Arena for the presence of "death messages". You see, I am still not sure they work 100% correct, maybe I skipped some monster or weapon. There should be a death message for any sort of death and it must be logically bound with the way how player dies. For example if player is killed by a monster and a message sais he died from falling - it is a bug.

Maybe Firebrand should name them as DAY_MONTH_YEAR (22aug2006 for example), then it'd be more clear what's what. (well, or MONTH_DAY_YEAR, but it is better to write month using letters IMO).
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 15:41:16

RambOrc

While it's the natural way to put day first, month afterwards and year at the end (except in North America where they have month-day-year which is IMO less natural), for computer indexing the best is to use year-month-day. The standard UNIX date format is YYYY-MM-DD (with the dashes), today is e.g. 2006-08-10. Use this format everywhere and there will be less problems. If you weren't all so Winblows-addled, you would know about it already.

In colloquial speech here we address the date as Month Day Year, so it sounds perfectly natural to us.

Well, yes, YYYY-MM-DD is more convenient for sorting.

Here in Mexico we use DD-MM-YYYY, but as Ramborc said, it's better to use YYYY-MM-DD for computer indexing, I might change the KA stuff names ASAP, heh! It's a bit confusing to check which of the files is newer, in the meantime, try ordering the files by date in the browser, that should save you some troubles .

I guess these are my priorities so far, in decreasing order: 1) Managing the audio (more or less the music related one; the sound ones tmc2i is more specialized in, but I can do it if it turns out he can't anymore) 2) Testing KA (which I haven't been able to do yet because my computer in which Hexen runs flawlessly is in a really terrible state right now, where even clicking on a hyperlink causes a system crash. So the comp I'm using now, a real nice HP Pavillion running on XP (due to external forces ), can't run Hexen without performing unacceptably slowly. It should be clean and easy) 4) Making a comic strip (apparantely... ) Though keep in mind that due to my tight school schedule, none of the above will be accomplished until at least next April.

I've run the latest version, first of all there are like a zillion "Dev: UpdateLevel: player overflow" messages in the console and in the debug textfile. I've tried the KTH mode, the sounds are good. I don't get though why there are such delays in the actions, the player who frags the heresiarch is himself for another 5-10 secs or so instead of morphing instantly. I still have the same basic problem as before on this 950 MHz Celeron, when I play a map with no bots or monsters, it's fluent, but when I summon a couple of bots it gets unplayably choppy, looks like KA needs a LOT of CPU horsepower. Or is it just me?

According to an idea I want to try there, Heresiarche's death and new Heresiarch'es morph are emphasized by a number of visual effects while morphing player becomes immobile and invulnerable. As for running slow, it happens too but with less frequency on my tests.
