http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... /semap.png is a scanned in b&w version of the map I drew by hand. http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... _color.jpg is a colored version where roads, towns and rivers are drawn in color, and the terrain types (swamp, forest, plains, hills, mountains, desert) color coded.

FB, do you want to make the artistic version of this map or should we post that we are looking for a 2D artist that can paint this map in detail?

I could try to paint this, but don't expect some rather big thing, I'll just get to paint small terrain textures and fill the parts of the map with those, I'll upload a quick preview of this ASAP so that you can evaluate how it looks and from there decide what would be best .
Fri, 16 Oct 2009 12:49:54

RambOrc

That would be good, yes.

OK, here's a quick preview of it, it's unfinished, but I would like to know if you like how it's done so far, it might require a bit more detail in some parts, let me know what you would like to see and if this is coming along in a good way . [spoiler:1r7t43rk][img:1r7t43rk]http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev/firebrand/previews/semap_artistic_preview.bmp[/img:1r7t43rk][/spoiler:1r7t43rk] BTW, I'm using spoiler tags to avoid the screwed up forum layout .

HINT: you could simply give a link to the file I liked it, except for flower tiles. I suggest maybe decrease desnity of these white spots, it looks too irritating in comparison to other textures.

The idea is interesting, some of the textures need to be changed though, especially the forest which looks like a meadow. Also, the plains that were left white on my sketch are plains of the red-brown variety like the Wastelands map in the Shadow Wood hub.

Firebrand

Yes, I'll change the texture I used for the forest to simply green with small trees, as for the white ones, I'll fix those too...

Upon closer inspection, the green component of the brown-green texture used in the eastern parts (e.g. surrounding the big city in the east) looks pretty good for dense foliage like forests.

I'm doing variations between that one and the small trees without the white spots , I'm still working on this, I've been doing some work with the mountain textures, so that the next one I upload is the (almost) complete version of the map, I'll be away for tomorrow to visit my nephew on Queretaro, I'm taking a laptop, so maybe if I have the chance I'll work on this and upload something on Monday, when I'll have a day off .

BTW am I the only one that thinks the map I drew looks a lot like a head from profile view? Also not sure whether it's a good or a bad thing. If a) yes and b) bad, I'd suggest replacing most of the water in the southmost part with mountains.

Now that you mention it, it does... LOL But I don't think that's bad, it's not too noticeable IMO, and if it it, who cares?

I've uploaded a new version of the artistic version of the land map, it's in the same location, so watching the image I posted above will show the new version, I also uploaded a PNG version for in-game, it might need to be resized for this purpose thought. Let me know what you think of it, I was thinking on making small post in the dev blog to show the map to the public if you agree.

The hills in the north and in the south have a different art, otherwise it should be fine for in-game use. Also, don't forget the map can be bigger than screen size, it can be scrolled while moving according to CW.

Interesting way to draw maps using stamps (if I understood that right). Application is "Inkscape" and it is open source: http://www.inkscape.org/showcase/galler ... pg_map.png

RambOrc

Actually the same principle works in any other object-based image editor as long as you don't want the "stamps" vary in size (e.g. each tree is the same size in a forest).
Wed, 09 Dec 2009 12:19:14

Firebrand

Looks interesting! Maybe the stamps can be used in other programs , I'll give it a check ASAP.

The current version of the image should be fine for the first release, a new picture can be drawn later.
