Score! Old childhood memories of my 386 revisited

Wed, 20 Jul 2005 17:46:21

The 4th Class

I grew up with a 386 in my bedroom, starting from the age of 6. Nowadays computers like that are a piece of crap, and I don't remember most of its specs, but it's not the computer itself I have fond memories of. It's the old side-scrolling PC games we had on it, all from the early 90's, one dating back to 1991. Lemmings, Jill Of The Jungle, Hocus Pocus, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Humans. Of course I had Heretic and Hexen, but they were installed on a better computer. Anyway, we (my parents) eventually through out the old 386, and until now I completely forgot about all those wonderful primitive games. It wasn't until I found them on floppies in an old floppy cabinet locked away in the laundry room. Unfortunately, many of them were only sharewares, so the only way to get the full versions now is to buy it (I looked into it - they're not freeware). But that's okay, because they're about <=$10. It's not that I'm only gonna get them for myself, but my younger sister gets a kick out the old games and I know she'll enjoy them too. I may even get some games that I never had in my youth, but found a demo of them that she likes too, and I may enjoy them as well. Well that's enough awe from me.

I suggest you rather buy that C=64 emulator thingie you can buy since someone made it, AFAIR it's a joystick with a couple of ICs in the bottom that contains the C=64 code and dozens of original games... back in the first half of the 1990s and all through the 1980s PCs were the worst gaming platform of all... C= 64/128/16/+4/Amiga, ZX-81, ZX Spectrum, Atari etc. were all much more advanced than the shitty PC. I remember some old Commodore games from the mid-to-late 1980s that were at least as advanced than the crap you could get in the early 1990s on a PC.

I recommend you try playing the games I mention, sure they're typical side-scrollers, but NOT crap! I must have played them dozens of time all the way through, and those were good times.

Guess what, back on the Commodore C= +4 back in the early 1990s I've been playing a 3D FPS in which you not only could walk around, but you could enter a range of different vehicles and drive them. Some of them even had air capabilities and you could fly with them. This was some 15 years before Quake. I still hold my opinion that the PC was the crappiest game computer in the time of the 386 and it would still be if all those competitors wouldn've have died out.

LOL, you should check my cabinets then they are full of floppy disks with demos and complete versions of those old "crappy" games, I like them a lot, but sadly some of them don't even run on the new computers . I remember I had a 386 PC it was an IBM PS/1 (I remember the model even), it had 4 MB RAM and it ran at the AMAZING speed of 32MHZ it had like 12 MB HD and a floppy disk drive, then I bought some RAM for it and it's amazingly still working as a museum piece on my uncle's home (he did bought it from me before I upgraded my computer), I remember I had several games that even ran in EGA and other crappy video modes, LOL those were good times indeed I remember when the 486 appeared and it was the maximum thing on computer technology...

heh I've had a 386 16MHz computer with a Tseng3000 video card and a Sound Blaster 2.0 back then, with a 360mb HD was coooooooool i later then got a 486 40MHz, 32mb ram, same hd, Sound Blaster 16 and some cheap and obscure RTVGA (RealTek VGA) card, with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 too. I LAN game'd as early as 1994, I had Doom then \o/ Earlier I just stumbled upon my Megarace cd, rebel assault CD, Seawolf cd (lol) and Strike Commander cd (WITH OMG, SPEECHPACK!) I think my collection pwns everyone's here, as I also have a large and wide plastic box full of 5 2.5"'s of all of sierra's software before 1992. Neener neener nee-nerr Nostalgia kicks alot of ass, I just switched to adelphia chan 16 (free preview channel, they had Nick GAS) and watched a bit of SUPER SLOPPY DOUBLE DARE AND FINDERS KEEPERS omg ( THEY HAD METAL GEAR FOR NES AS A PRIZE LOL!), Get The Picture and nick arcade! rofl, watched alot of those back in the day. man damnit everyone, i'm gonna boot up my p100 now for some xwing. I mean, that FPS you mentioned, just because it did all those things before Quake, doesn't mean that Quake is no good. There's also the nostalgia factor of revisiting old memories. And that's what's going to charm me the most. [quote="Firebrand":3n451az0]LOL, you should check my cabinets then they are full of floppy disks with demos and complete versions of those old "crappy" games, I like them a lot, but sadly some of them don't even run on the new computers . My 386 ran at 25MHz, but the rest of the specs I forget. I wasn't the one that bought it, so I wouldn't have known anyway.

I never liked it. The mercenaries barely upgraded at all, and everybody's aiming was so hilariously crappy. Sometimes they even disobeyed orders! Not to mention the enemy has my name.

I remember I used them when I was in elementary school, but I never had 5.25" disks myself at home, I have always used the Floppy disks in home.

I remember i used games in the C64 in school. Still for the time i can't remember it being really better than PC (guess they were already old by the time i used them). The first one i used was a texas instrument that used cartridges... can't remember which one was it. Afterwards it came a 286. Of old games i remember much newer ones than those, out of this world, lemmings, wolfenstein, prehistoric, monkey island... say late 80s, early 90s. edit: found it, the texas TI/99 4a Beige =) http://www.old-computers.com/museum/com ... st=1&c=929

I remember someone borrowed me one that was really similar to it, it had some games, but it was really long time ago (I was like 6 years old) to remember what they were but it was really shitty, but funny to use for a time, heh!

You can't compare a C=64 to a 286. It was already old when the 8086 (predecessor of the 286) was new and you could hook it up to your color TV when the PC was still confined to a 4-color CGA monitor resp. the big news was the 16-shades grayscale monitor...

Ok yeah, argument taken I would have been using computers around then, although I struggle to remember much from when I was 5 or 6 . But yes I would have been in contact with computers at that time. I still say your all old.
