I don't know about save game file, I've tried once to find where it is but couldn't get it.. but hey don't feel too bad because I got a nice recipe here. Peanut chicken : Ingredients for 4 persons: 7 oz (200 g) of peannuts 1 good fram chicken 1 2/3 cups (2 dl) of (peannut) oil 4 cups (1 litre) of water or chicken broth Salt, pepper and spice (to taste) Cooking Time: About 1 hour depending the chicken's size - Roast (or grill) a chickenun, at three quarters, adding a pinch of salt and pepper or other spices - Grill some peannuts in a frying pan, skin them, then mashe them and cook them in boiling water to obtain a broth - Seperate chicken in pieces (wings, legs, etc.). - Enroll each piece in peannut broth, and fry (in oil) until completely cooked Hope it helps.

The savegames are stored in directory hexndata and is composed from multiple files. hex?.hxs contains player information and hex???.hxs are saves of the individual maps.

And, Nosferax, do not forget to save the Peanut Chicken in an apropriate savegame folder at the game directory when it is roasted... Can we eat it with smash potatoes and gravy? Sir Billiam

On macs save game files are separate and put into whatever directory you tell it to so the save game files are unlimited. You can LOAD multiplayer games on version 1.1 on macs, but you can't on the Death manager for version 1.1 on PC's (You can in the setup, but not if you're playing on a different wad file ). Any Suggestions???

Hey this time I have to defend Billy, he's right... Mac Hexen is far more advanced than DOS Hexen, it offers several higher resolutions (up to 640x400) and unlimited savegames into the folder of my choice. I only have the demo but it's cool, if there'd be no source ports I'd play that one.
Sat, 27 Apr 2002 17:22:00

dj_jl

The Windows version of Hexen also had higher resolutions. And even in DOS hexen you can change savegame folder by editing default.cfg.
Sat, 27 Apr 2002 17:59:00

Sir Billiam

It's just too bad some of the cooler wads don't work on the mac (like Caldera as one Very good example (It crashes on level 2 ), and Deathkings of the Dark Citatel, but that's not SO cool). The Mac version of HEXEN is the first one I had, since we didn't get our HP until 1999 or 2000. I was lucky and found a PC version of Hexen along with Deathkings of the Dark citatel. I transferred all the wads I had collected off the internet from My Imac and/or the G3 to the HP and found that Caldera works a whole lot better on the PC. It was then I was finally able to get Heretic and Hexen2 (They don't have mac versions ). I really did notice the difference between windows Hexen and Mac Hexen. I saw on Macgames.com or something that they're working on a mac version of Hexen2(YAY !), but I don't know when they're going to get done with it. Maybe we should start a new topic about mac Hexen (we certainly aren't talking about savegame files much anymore).

Nono man, I'm for real. I don't know what J.P is saying by *kidding* but I found it. It's a gitch in the game that lets you go to map -1. It is ok. Alot of Ettins though, (depending on your class) Although it does have the coolest midi music. This msic isn't heard in any other level. I just realized it. Its kinda like the Nintendo game, Super Mario. Where you can find the level 0-1 and it is an INFINITE swimming map with NO END! you just swim and swim forever. This map is Hexen is similar. THere is NOT exit. Its just a castle with many doors, kinda similar to a Half-Life multiplayer map. (forgot the name). But yeah, its tricky how to access it.

I don't believe that there is such a map. There's no 'Misty Crucible' in the mapinfo.txt, and there's no unused maps in the iwad file. There is an unused midi file (sounds like a remade version of what you hear in Guardian of Ice). Also, there's a lot of extra map names in the mapinfo.txt (ERIC'S WHIRLWIND O' DEATH, MAYA, THE ATHENAEUM, etc.), but nowhere does it say 'Misty Crucible', even in Deathings.

Sir Billiam

What's the cheat combination for the -1 level? I tried typing in visit -1 and it didn't work. Are you guys talking about the maze (Map 41)? I can only get to the maze by typing in visit 41 and there's no new midi music and it's just a bunch of switches. PLEASE tell me how to get to the -1 level. The cheat combination OR the non-cheat way. Dark Mage, JP, I MUST join your DEATHMATCH! I don't have a waving thingy, but just give me a specified eastern time to join and I'll search as LONG AS IT TAKES!!!!! I must show you My power. I've never had a truly formidable opponent You're using JHexen 1.1.1 right? And WHY ISN'T ANYONE TELLING ME HOW TO EDIT THE SCRIPTS!?!?!?!!?!? I put that topic in the Hexen forum in hopes that somewone knowledgable (Like Ramborc, Janis or Ichor, *HINT HINT*) would be able to tell me. The script is something I need access to to unlock my full potential.
Thu, 02 May 2002 01:49:00

Sir Billiam

Ichor, I went into the midi files in my wad editor and as a matter of fact I did find a really cool music that was like the guardian of ice (Other than the Castle of Grief and the guardian of ice itself). It's called Chap_2 something, correct? It sounded like something out of Hexen2 PoP. But what's really interesting about it is that it was called CHAP_something, because all the other CHAP_somethings are remade songs from the levels in the seven portals (the dragon chapel = seven portals, griffon chapel = guardian of fire, Deathwind chapel = guardian of steel, wolf chapel = Heresiarch's seminary). And also when you pull the chain switches they say: one 9th of the puzzle has been solved on the monastery. Instead of: One 9th of the puzzle was solved on HERESIARCH's seminary. It's as though map 13 was originally intended to be called the monastery Maybe originally they had planned on making Hexen a 3-episode game just like Heretic (Notice that's when the Heresiarch appears? *Hint Hint*) Perhap's the CHAP_2 music was the music that was originally intended for the final showdown with the REAL KORAX in the bars that open to the next level but is not the castle of Grief (Notice how the castle of grief Midi music sounds sort of like the guardian of ice as well? *Hint Hint*) Too bad they had to pose KORAX's PET as the REAL KORAX due to the lack of bosses (If that current end boss was originally intended to be Korax's pet, then why didn't they combine them into one monster and have Korax ride on him like D'sparil?). That Midi music Has just added to the Hexen enigma that is the mysterious reality of the Korax and Eidolon inside my almost demented mind SYCHE! :

PLUS NOTICE HOW THEY STOPPED THE CHAIN SWITCH SYSTEM IN THE CASTLE OF GRIEF! *HINT HINT*
Thu, 02 May 2002 03:13:00

Ichor

For the switch thing, I'm guessing they wanted some variety. There were already 3 hubs where you had to find a certain amount of puzzle switches, so they decided on using certain puzzle items for the fourth hub, namely the clock gears, books, and the skull. Even in the third hub, they were using multiple puzzle items even before you had to hit all nine switches. If they had continued on with this theme, what would they have done, 12 switches for hub 4 and 15 for hub 5? It would have become extremely repetitive, tedious, and just plain dull to continually have to hit a certain number of switches in order to finish or nearly finish the hub. By the way, I'm sure you noticed the fact that hitting the switch in the secret map in the second hub opens the way to the secret map in hub four. Now, why would they have done something like this if they were planning at one time to stop the game at only 3 episodes? And just as a little side note... From what I remember, you won't find a single key in the third hub, and definitely not on the fifth one.

Thu, 02 May 2002 10:56:00

Sir Billiam

As for that forsaken outpost thing. UHHHH....... Maybe at first it was to tag a door in episode 3 that they forgot to put in, so when they decided to make an episode 4 they put it in there. Yeah Yeah! And that Chap_2 Midi music was supposed to be the music for the Original secret level in episode 3 (Not Deathwind Chapel). And you notice how episode 3 uses music from episode 1? They did that in Heretic as well... (*HINT HINT*). Perhaps they decided instead of using the same old music they remade them to be more intense, to make you FEAR the TRUE KORAX! Actually, they did that music thing in Hexen2 as well, except on episode five and not episode 3 (Cuz they ORIGINALLY intended Eidolon to be on episode 5 *HINT HINT*). Ichor, it's gonna take you a long while to finish that Fury wad (or mod, if you look at it that way) isn't it? Afterward, How about making a mod for Hexen? It will be all the same levels except Heresiarchs will be converted into Maulotaurs, Green Chaos serpents will have 1000 Hp and spit out 4 flame balls at a time (Making a whole lot less chaos serpents and putting other beasts in their place, as a Chaoserpent should be the boss of episode 1), and maybe turn brown chaoserpents into something else (like weredragons? Idunno) and replacing all the old green Chaoserpents with them. And If you've been reading all those complaints I had about the REAL and Fake KORAX, I think it goes without saying how you should convert him... (*Remember what I've been saying about Korax's pet and why isn't the REAL Korax riding him?*)
Thu, 02 May 2002 10:59:00

Sir Billiam

Plus, in the files of hexen and Heretic, NOTICE HOW THE SHORT NAMES FOR D'SPARIL AND HERESIARCH'S FRAMES ARE BOTH SORC_something! (*HINT HINT*).
Thu, 02 May 2002 11:50:00

Ichor

The mod I'm making is for Hexen. It won't take too much longer to finish the first episode (already working on map 5). There won't be Maulotaurs, but there will be a couple of monsters that will be just as tough. I noticed the Chaos Serpent problem as well, so I changed the health of normal ones to around 600 - 800 health (was 250). These will be the young versions with a fraction of their full power. The fully grown Chaos Serpents will be a whole lot stronger, will shoot more fireballs at a time, and will be much faster. They won't use that ground fire stream attack though (another enemy will use this). You won't see these until maybe episode 2. And as for the boss of the first episode...well...it will somewhat resemble an old Heretic enemy, but it's behaviour will be almost completely different, and will probably give you nightmares for a while.

We wanted to play Wolfenstein deathmatch with my brother 2 days ago just to find out there isn't any. Either we're very stupid or the losers who took out all traditional multiplayer arts from the game. The upper limit of my intelligence is about the level of a plain CTF match with 2 bases and 2 flags, everything more complex is just too much for my humble mind. My favorite teamplay mode is Domination and the best is of course Deatmatch, it doesn't require much of a thinking. Dark Mage, you HAVE TO get UT, it's the best game of both 1999 and 2000, just as Unreal was the best one in 97 and Rune the best in 2001 (not yet decided about 2002, but after having played 15 maps of Wolfenstein, it's certainly not going to be the one. The first 10 maps or so were very cool but afterwards it turned into a Half-Life copy and I hate Half-Life single player). Quakes? Q2 is just plain too ugly and Q3 has bad gameplay. I played it back when it was new becuz it had the greatest graphics at that time but nowadays those graphics aren't so hot any more so there's no reason any more to tolerate badly coded movement and physics. One thing in favor of Q3, it has awesome bot intelligence if you play Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch (you can screw them in CTF and other complex modes, though). AvP2? Never even saw the 1st one. Didn't even see any of the movies and I'm not interested either. Horror stuff is just outside of my field of interest. I guess we agree to disagree on taste in games... how the hell did we end up with a common favorite (Hexen)?

Ichor. I'm sorry if you wanted to keep the I*** *****S a surprise, but I've been messing aroun warping levels and I found that you converted all the brown Chaos Serpents into them. Why are they all reddish? Aren't ***N L***** Supposed to be a silverish - grayish color? I know what monster shoots the Maulotaur fire as well. It's those bloody S********RS! I thought you were intending to convert them into Maulotaurs cuz of that, but I guess not. I didn't want to spoil anyone else waiting eagerly for your mod wad, so I put the names of the creatures with stars so only you and me could recognize them (Unless somewone else has so little a life that they would take all their sweet time to decipher them )

Fri, 03 May 2002 01:00:00

Sir Billiam

Ichor, By looking at your site I've seen you've composed a theory about the Chaos Serpents growth. I have a theory too, but it involves my Ranting about the REAL KORAX. I think the Chaos Serpent that D'sparil uses is the first form; then the HYPERSERPENT (i.e., the present-day korax), which the REAL KORAX (i.e., the present day Heresiarch) was supposed to ride upon as a mount is the second stage; then the 3rd stage is called the MEGA SERPENT, which takes the likeness and powers of the FAKE EIDOLON (They should have at least made Eidolon a wizard riding on a Dragon, which would show they recognized the mistake Raven made in developing Hexen). *SIGH*, Somewone should Develop the mod I was talking about in that Hexen Topic I made. That would get my point out (I don't have the programs, let alone knowing how to use them to make the mod myself ).
Fri, 03 May 2002 01:12:00

Sir Billiam

Ichor, I get the feeling you're planning on a surprise boss at the end. Most first - Persons don't show a picture along with the description of the final boss you must face in the Bestiary (I'm talking about the picture of Korax (Which Happens to be the FAKE KORAX!)). A puppet, Huh? Don't tell me he's being controlled by the Ghost of D'sparil, cuz if you've studied your Serpent Rider History You'd know that D'sparil's spirit was contained by Praevus at the time. That cancels that option out. Is he being controlled by Eidolon? I'd love to hear that The REAL Wizard Korax is smart enough to possess his Pet instead of riding on it as a mount like D'sparil (I'd like to hear that about Eidolon, too). Maybe The CHAOS SPHERE IS CONTROLLING HIM! ... NAH, I doubt it. I guess I'll just have to wait until you're done with it.

Just remember that this will be the sequel to the Carnage Galore series, not the original Heretic. The story differs slightly. For instance, the second one (ichor.wad) takes place 100 years after the first one (carnage.wad), and that one takes place long (probably another 100 years) after the original Heretic and Heretic 2 stories. Praevus has long since come and gone.
Fri, 03 May 2002 02:22:00

Sir Billiam

Oh, sorry. I didn't know what the Carnage Galore series was (so that's why it says "carnage Galore III" when the console pops up). I think I have Carnage Galore 1, a deathmatch total conversion, but it won't let me play it. It runs on the old Death Manager system. Does That mean I need Hexen version 1.0 to run it? That's dumb. Or is this another mod I'm talking about? It was called carnage something. I'm really sorry but I don't know the stories behind your Carnage Galore series
Fri, 03 May 2002 02:30:00

Sir Billiam

Ichor, Remember how you found that unused midi file (CHAP_2R)? Well I found an unused sound effect. It's called Piece 1, and it's really creepy without music in the background. I noticed that CHAP_1R is a remake of The Seven portals, CHAP_2R = Guardian of ice, CHAP_3R = guardian of fire, and CHAP_4R = Guardian of Steel. Isn't that intriguing? Perhaps CHAP_2R was meant for wolf chapel but for some reason they changed it. It would've made more sense to use CHAP_2R for the ethic of those levels, another mistake in the Honor of the Hexen series they made (But that using the HYPERSERPENT instead of the REAL KORAX really took the cake). There's also a song I found a long while ago on the Hexen2 audio CD that they didn't use (Track 16), but then they remembered it and included it with PoP. Weird, HuH? What you have there isn't one of mine. Carnage.wad was a nine level game for single player. That was my first attempt at making maps other than deathmatch, and compared to the maps I'm making now, they were crude and lame. There are a few of deathmatch maps that I've made, but they are all bad, with the possible exception to awaits.wad, which was my first attempt at a Hexen map. So unless you have one of these... hepta.wad - deathmatch for Doom 2 - First map...terrible shrine.wad - deathmatch for Heretic - It was bad, but with JHeretic, it might work a lot better. awaits.wad - deathmatch for Hexen - Never actually got a chance to play this multiplayer carnage.wad - Heretic episode...bad compared to later maps, runs on normal Heretic ichor.wad - Heretic episode, used hhe to make the Iron Liches float around like the Cacodemons, some of the effects won't work well in JHeretic invade2.bsp, invade3.bsp, invade4a.bsp - Quake Team Fortress maps...still haven't figured out why people play still it after four years ...then it's not one of mine.

Regarding the hexen II manual, one of the game developers from Hexen (MRJ) told me that all 3 manuals were written by external people, not by one of the game developers at Raven. And MRJ especially didn't like the Hexen II manual, he meant the same as many Heretic/Hexen fans, i.e. that it doesn't really suit the games themselves. The strange thing is that the Hexen II manual has been written by Joe Grant Bell, a cool guy who wrote nice official strategy guides like the Hexen one which is a good read. AFAIK he wrote the DOOM Battlebook as well (which I never was able to find, not even 2nd hand like I found the Betrayal in Antara strategy guide which is also his work AFAIR). It's strange such a good writer made such a crap manual as that of Hexen II.

But it is true that Hexen2 takes place 2000 years after Heretic, isn't it? PS: In the Cronicle of Deeds, that information is in the D'sparil Part of the Serpent Riders section.

My cousin was much more experienced at videogames than I was when I was ten, and I played Hexen (My very 1rst 1rst person shooter) at that age and could still Tear him up in it Like a Cleenex in a Snot-Party. I started playing pok'emon when I was 11, and since then nowone ever beat me in a FAIR GAME (**** THOSE GAMESHARK PEOPLE!!!). I have and mastered the entire serpent rider series by now. So Heretic/Hexen series was intented to be something like controlling a group instead of one character, right ? Well why not make a full RPG then ?
Fri, 03 May 2002 23:47:00

Sir Billiam

You really wanna Know these sources? Try reading the Instruction Manuals! They clearly state that the Sidhe were a secret tribe so the last of the Sidhe warriors had to go battle D'sparil after he had been weakened from murdering the Sidhe elders, and that Fighters Clerics and Mages Are part of three Ever-Disputing Castes in Cronos. The Fighters birthright is in the legion, a Mage is brought into the life of the Arcanum, and the Clerics are raised to conduct spiritual healing powers in the Church. A REAL Game Freak would know that from the instructions before even playing Hexen

Sat, 04 May 2002 02:11:00

Sir Billiam

No. What I meant by that was that there must have been a band of heroes in the real... Umm... I mean, there must be a large group of those heroes in classes if it were a book or something and in the end everyone dies except the main characters, not that you control a whole group yourself!
Sat, 04 May 2002 02:28:00

RambOrc

Neither-nor... you should be reading some heroic or dark fantasy from ppl like Robert E. Howard, Karl Edward Wagner, or Simon R. Green. You'll see that there are a LOT of fantasy books where less than half a dozen heroes (often only 1 or 2) set out to do something hugely impossible and then not only do it but also survive (names like Conan, Kane or Hawk & Fisher come to my mind).
Sat, 04 May 2002 02:40:00

Sir Billiam

But the serpent riders wield the power of the Chaos Sphere.... Anyway, In Heretic 1, the hero was not called Corvus or any other name, just a single sidhe warrior avenging his elders with the others (That's why co-op mode makes sense ). I'm not saying that It couldn't be true that they did it alone, I'm just saying it's a Fat chance. Plus Described in the instruction manuals there could be a pretty good chance that just not one of each class attacked the Serpent Rider. It said that those three were the only ones brave enough to stand up to Korax, but some other sensible Human's could have managed to escape Korax's wrath upon Cronos and went on a journey separately, or something. If it emphasised that there was only one of each, why would they let people choose the same character and go up to 8 in Co-op? I'm saying there is A CHANCE that there could have been more than them and let's leave it at that, OK?
Sat, 04 May 2002 07:22:00

Sir Billiam

So in the instruction manual, where it said the character classes were four individual people whose names are unkown, they were really supposed to be like groupings of people from those particular continents, just like the classes in Hexen had the probability of it being 3 groups of many people, and in Heretic it could've been a band of Sidhe? I thought it was kind of unlikely that 4 common people could slay the great Serpent Rider alone, since obviously Corvus was the last one left in a band of Sidhe warriors by the time he got to D'sparil, and The 3 Classes started out as a large group, and by the time they got to Korax only Baratus, Daedolon, and Parias were left? Even though in the manuals it said that those particular heroes were the only volunteers, I find that to be Highly unlikely. Because it's nearly impossible for not even a handful of humans to fight through those huge armies and then Kill a Horrible Demon Wizard. I could actually do that alone without dying on level 5 difficulty in Hexen, but in a videogame you don't have such a high sense of fear as the real Heroes did, and it's a lot easier to maneuver yourself with a keyboard then to sidestep like crazy with your own feet. Know what I mean?
Sat, 04 May 2002 07:32:00

RambOrc

You shouldn't try and take video games seriously becuz that'd be dangerous if you mix up reality with plastic simulation. The more life-like an action game, the less fun it is. Could've any US spy killed hundreds of Wehrmacht soldiers single-handedly like you do in Wolfenstein? Or could an untrained scientist kill highly trained army soldiers and marines by the dozen and deadly monsters by the hundreds? Come on.... <blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr> in a videogame you don't have such a high sense of fear as the real Heroes did, and it's a lot easier to maneuver yourself with a keyboard then to sidestep like crazy with your own feet. Your father should force you more often to get out of the house and take a walk in the REAL world, if you yourself don't have the sense to do it.
Sat, 04 May 2002 13:50:00

Billy, it's really time you get away from your monitor for a while and take a look at the real world... you're living in a world of fantasy that doesn't have much in common with our reality, which wouldn't be much of a prob unless that you try to apply the structures of your fantasy world to our real one... If you ever start developing a game or even a game mod, you'll realize you do a lot of things this or that way for much more common reasons than whether it fits the story or not. You can have up to 8 players (4 in original Hexen w/o patch) in multiplayer becuz that's what the DOOM engine supported and in all DOOM/Heretic/Hexen you can play more than one hero in multiplayer becuz multiplayer is fun and who cares about whether it fits the story of singleplayer or not (this goes for pretty much all 3D games up to this day, indeed most of today's shooters have a radically different MP than SP). DOOM is maybe the best example. id never made a secret of it that they never cared a **** about the story and how the game fits it. It was all about gameplay and fun, the rest is blah blah. Quake IV will be the first one of the Quake series with a real storyline, and DOOM3 might be the first one of the DOOM series with one (provided it'll have at all). And while DOOM is the grandfather of all shooters and it's a legend and people handle it as a sanctum that could be only this way and no other way, the fact is that DOOM became what it became to a large extent by chance. Just to give a quick example, up to a short time before release, you could still pick up treasure items in DOOM the way you could in Wolfenstein 3D.
