PM to RambOrc about Metallica

What do you think about them? You never talk about them, so either you don't like them, or you've never heard. Wink I'm asking BTW because Metallica are among the biggest names in thrash, let alone metal, and none of your best-metal-bands lists so to speak has them on it, which is a bit strange because almost every thrash fan here in North America ranks them in at least their top 10. [quote="RambOrc":b0gw73sl]Oh sure I know them, I'm just not much of a fan. Their 2nd and 3rd album I still have around I think (Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets), everything that came after it is pretty much crap. The first album has been mostly written by Dave Mustaine whom they kicked from the band which was in the end a good thing for heavy metal fans all around the world because he went on and founded Megadeth which was and is way cooler than Metallica. Another thing I'm pissed at Metallica for is Jason Newsted, he was bassist in the best speedthrash band of its time, Flotsam & Jetsam. Their first two albums, Doomsday for the Deceiver and No Place for Disgrace are among the best metal albums ever. After that, Newsted was sucked in by Metallica and F&J changed direction and while they wrote a good song now and then since, they never came any close to the genius of those two albums ever again. I also don't see what people like about Metallica so much, it's like the Microsoft hype: they are regarded as inventors whereas much of their invention is stolen from others, like the first album that has a couple of songs on it that are still quoted as classics by the fans, whereas they were written not by those money-greedy Metallica bastards but by Dave Mustaine whom they didn't even give credit... also, that moron can't sing at all, he's among the worst singers ever in a popular metal band. Just as with computer software where if I want innovations and real good things I go anywhere but to Microsoft, the same goes for heavy metal and Metallica. As Manowar puts it (well not about them but it fits IMO): "whimps and posers". p.s. Why are you talking about these things in PM? Others might be interested too. For me, Metallica's first four albums are really good, but definitely overrated. I like their sense of melody and structure. I also really like their technical aspects in And Justice For All. However, all their lyrics are the same thing - I'm dying and I don't want to. I agree that James Hetfield is among the worst metal singers, excluding those who simply scream or grunt, because that's not singing anyway. O yes and I already knew about Mustaine being a former member. Newsted once being in Flotsam & Jetsam rings a bell, but I keep forgetting that for some reason. I really want to get Doomsday For The Deceiver, but no CD store nearby even has a single album by them. I'll have to order it then. The thing about Metallica that really pissses me off the most is the fans. They are all disgruntled, uneducated, and ignorant. Disgruntled because they listen to nothing but Metallica. Uneducated because they've never really listened to any other metal band besides Metallica. Ignorant because they think the only metal band worth listening to is Metallica. No fan of any other metal band is this brainwashed. Every band who's been on MTV has sheep like these for fans. I can see the correlations to Micro$haft completely. Tell you what, how about I post these PM's (and maybe the Angel Of Retribution and Stonekeep one too) in the OT forum for the others to see? [quote="RambOrc":b0gw73sl]Actually, even some of those screamers and grunters sound better than Hetfield. Just checked, Amazon.com has both CDs for 7.99 and 11.99, worth every penny and lots more. If you're interested in any of the others, don't just by them, I have all 8 and I actually plan to sell some of them (#6-8 for sure, maybe #3 and #4 as well). I just saw they're releasing a new one in a couple of weeks, but not sure I buy it before listening to some of it - the last F&J I liked was Drift (#5, very different from #1 and #2, but good). Yep, Metallica lives from clever marketing a lot like M$, they make people believe their shit is really better than that of others. That said, some of the songs on Ride the Lightning are actually pretty good, and back in '97 when I designed the Hell's Surface maps I listened most of the time to Monster of Puppets, it was great as a kind of background music (but the titles are too drawn-out and repetitive for real listening, if I'd just want to sit down and listen to music and concentrate only on that it'd be rather boring). Feel free to put any of the mentioned PMs into the OT forum, yes, great idea.

I can't even believe anyone still thinks about Metallica. The last time I had to listen to them was on the Paradise Lost documentaries. I've never been a fan personally. If I go into "all the way" metal, I prefer Children of Bodom or Necrophagist. And as far as the older stuff goes, I was born in 83 so the only band from the early metal days (middle I guess) that I like is Slayer. Has anyone heard the new DragonForce CD. Their singer is cheesy but their chinese guitarist is fucking awesome.

Personally, I'm only a casual early Metallica fan, though I am a fan of Slayer. I don't have a favourite metal band, but metal itself is one of my all-time favourite genres. As for Dragonforce, I like them, but to be honest, I think the only reason they're so popular is because of how fast they play. Still, they are very talented musicians.

You're exactly right. I wouldn't like them if they weren't so fast cause I have like 300 metal band's cds and everthing becomes generic after a while.
