Music-maps assignment

RambOrc

Since the dungeon maps of the main storyline are already defined, it's time to assign each map one of the songs written by 4th, as well as to the settlements listed in it.
1.starting map in forest, you get attacked then go home to nearby base 2.small order base in forest, you get the starter quest that takes you to an underground location in the forest 3.Underground location in the forest (hexquak2, hexquake, agility with boss fight). After this, you return to the small order base from where you get sent to the big port city ----------------- 4.big port city, rumors lead you to the desert in the east 5.small settlement at the edge of the desert, you get directions to the ancient burial grounds nearby 6.necros (5 maps), after the end boss you find a tablet you can't translate, you take it to the nearby city 7.big city in the plains, you deliver the tablets to your order's headquarters there and they see that it pertains to Korax. For a full translation, they send you to Daedalon, the only survivor of the three heroes who fought Korax' minions (original Hexen story) 8.Daedalon's tower in the northern forest, you talk to him and he tells you he found out about a cult of Korax worshippers lead by an unknown fiend who is rumored to be much stronger than any Heresiarch before, and he has a couple of places in mind where you might find traces of them. So you go and visit all three. ----------------- 9.The first place is to the north in the hills (chaossrh, leading to octarena with a boss fight) 10.The second place is to the west in the swamps (gnosis, which exits to swamp ledges with a boss fight there) 11.The third place is to the east, in the mountains (hexquake3, leading to hexsoul with a boss fight) 12.From the clues these places provide, Daedalon pieces some more infos together and sends you to the mountain city in the southern mountains. 13.From there, you get directions to a huge cultist base (zowehex, 6 maps). You kill their leader and return to Daedalon. He translated the tablet in the meantime and founds out about a huge army coming from the southeast, so he sends you to the plains city to warn them. ----------------- 14.The plains southeast of the city, the epic battle where the heroes of all three orders fight together (the other two are AI controlled). After the battle, you return to the plains city and with the information you gathered from the slain enemies you can determine a headquarters of the cult in the eastern mountains. 15.chuxen (6 maps), the headquarters of the order, it exits into the last map 16.very special awesome map with awesome architecture, the uber heresiarch as end boss fight with lots of special gimmicks. the end.

Alright, I can see the page now. Things look good here, this is going to be fun! And quick question: what to the rows of dashes between some of the maps represent?

Ok I tried out some of these maps, all the ones that were mentioned directly in that list of yours. Some of them are really scary! Anyways, I haven't completely made up my mind on all the maps yet, but of course this is a democratic decision that all of us get an equal say on. But there are some general things I want to point out before we make a final decision which maps take which soundtrack. Of course, we should try to find music that best fits the atmosphere of each map - not only in terms of the scenery, but also in terms of the main goals of the map (will this map mostly involve intense fighting and running around to save your life, or is this map more about exploring around a dangerous place, or is it really just a harmless zone with some frustrating puzzle to have to spend time figuring out?). Finally, and this is the hardest one, we should also make sure that the musics work in a chronological sense: some songs belong more at the beginning of the game, while others should be saved for the end either because they're bloody scary or so uplifting it makes you cry, lol. If you want, I can go back to all my old music (and Rolls' and others' too) and try to categorize them here in terms of the kind of feeling I get for them - just the STYLE of map that I would associate the song with. That way we at least get the 100s of songs organized by some sort of similarities. From there, it should be easier to experiment and test out a bunch on the maps.

[quote="The 4th Class":o32obzdm]And quick question: what to the rows of dashes between some of the maps represent? IIRC, they are like the "chapters" or "tiers" between maps (think of them as hubs) . BTW, good to see you around!

The dividers signalize story chapters. All dungeon maps in the main storyline are more about fighting than puzzles (there will be a shortcut to all hubs, which allows you to skip the puzzles but forfeit some nice weapon upgrades, so that FPS fans can play the game FPS style). It should be engaging, fun and very replayable. Tricky puzzles, jump'n'run and other stuff that some players love but others get frustrated with very fast are not part of the main storyline and will be added to the construct at a later stage (after early beta).

Ok, like I said, I think doing this would be easier if first we organize all of our material into various categories. That way we have a vague idea where all the songs fit. The way I came up with this list, is that I listened to the song in the foreground (without multi-tasking on anything else) and started writing jotnotes on the first mental image of a Hexen map that came to my mind. Obviously, each person who tries this will get something slightly different, but here's a start. Hopefully this will make it less overwhelming when you're drawing names from a hat to test them with the map. These categories are kinda arbitrary but here goes: ========================================== ENDLESS WARFARE (basically for maps where you will not have even a second to take a rest from battle) - Hell Keep - Fun and Crazy - Ode to Savagery (bit long though) - Ogreland - Pain (I doubt this could be used for a whole map... maybe just a battle scene) FOR MAPS WHERE YOU'LL KICK ASS BUT IT'S NOT GOING TO BE DANGEROUS OR THREATENING - Dragon-slayer - Falconr (I envison this place with marble tiles and big statues, hehe ;) ) - The Lucas Man (this song was a joke from the beginning but for non-threatening levels it works :P) - Winnowrmetal (a metal remix of MAP01 music. Using this could be very effective for nostalgic appeal. Either as a later easy level or one of the very first levels) - SLAVERY (By Paganraven) (Some place with brown textures... Like the Massifs in Caldera. An imperial complex would work well for this. Someplace that's brown and outdoors with lots of places to explore.) FOR MAPS WITH A MORE EXPLORING NATURE - Barren (For something "climatic" - like near the middle-end of the game) - Ego - Jachr (IMO more for the beginning maps with not a lot of dangers) - Lucas' Self Discovery (Excellent for more Aboriginal-themed areas!) - Blind (some place pitch black, like a crypt. I always envisioned this as taking place somewhere holy, like that crypt idea, some one's tomb, a resting place for a family... Underground perhaps.) - Weird World (and wasn't it Skyjake something or other who wrote this?) (I can see this working well for the outskirts of a friendly town, or maybe some place populated by faeries.) JOURNEYING (out of maps most likely) - Fields - Places to Go - To the East HORROR - Spider Dance (A DARK CAVE OR CAVERN) - Spire (A tower/lair/palace etc.) - BSong (someplaces make of grey stone... a cursed place? Definitely for a "dungeon" in the literal sence of the word, or maybe a mine. This IMO should be for one of the higher-level dungeons.) - Simonr (For a place with loads of traps... really dark and claustrophobic too. An abandoned mine would work nice) - Woods (an obvious enchanted forest) - TIPTOE (by Paganraven) (Sewers? Abandoned Mines? Any place where enemies are sparse but the suspense is intense and there's loads of hidden stuff like traps.) GLOOM / DESOLATION - Swamp Town (Not incredibly threatening) - Symptoms of the Plague - Entity (Lonely and mysterious... not depressing though. Some place mystical?) - Night (very short though... maybe for an entrypoint or of some sort?) - Pizzicato (Oriental themes... maybe a rainforest or a secluded village in the wilderness?) - Whispering Woods (anything involving trees) EMPHASIZING THE SCENERY - Umbrae in Silvis (Forest / Tribal territory) - Ice Pits (any place arctic) - Tegcan3a (Pirates at sea! Haha! How about like a port or someplace foggy and maritime? Maybe in a friendly zone?) - Tegcan5 (epic landscapes, gorgeous mountains and valleys, druidic tribes... No combat here though) - CHURCHY (by Paganraven) (Either any level involving a bell, like an abandoned courtyard, or perhaps an enemy outpost in the middle of nowhere. This song is really good!) CLEARLY NOT MAP SONGS - Basilica (In a friendly temple of some sort?) - Hub (interlude text? either alone or with a friendly character) - Lute (Holy place or friendly conversation... Definitely in a friendly zone) - Town Theme (An awesome town theme, or a royal hall theme) - M-01 (by Rolls) (Conversation with an NPC) - PERSUE (by Paganraven) (A friendly temple perhaps? Or a palace garden? A maternity ward? ;) ) ====================== Btw I have Pagan's songs if you've lost them.

We already set up "Places to Go" and "To the East" to play when travel map is displayed. Also, in case anyone did not notice, all the music we have is now stored here: http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... ces/music/

Besides the combat maps listed in the main storyline, there are following non-combat map music pieces needed: - travel map - villages/inns/farms (could be several pieces depending on the type of terrain the actual village is located on) - coast city - plains city - mountain city - order headquarters (3 music pieces, one for each order) - chapter beginning/end music

Hmm, here are my ideas: TRAVEL MAP: either Fields or Places to Go VILLAGES/INNS/FARMS: either Footcan or Dawn, or Oramus Diei COAST CITY: either Weird World or Tegcan3 (I could edit this to get rid of the dissonant part) PLAINS CITY: To the East (if the city is small and in the middle of nowhere) MOUNTAIN CITY: Tegcan5 But for the chapter beginnings and ends, is it the same songs for every chapter, or should we spice it up and give each chapter its own themes? Also, could you specify the names of the three others? It's one for each class, right? If that's so, here's rough idea: either CLERIC's or MAGE's ORDER: Town Theme (actually I think this song could work for any of the orders) You know, come to think of it, I do have some more modern songs that might fit in this context. (I don't compose much these days except within the context of my new band). I've written this one song for my band, called Phalanx, it's 41 minutes long but I can definitely take 2 or 3 minutes from it and make a theme for KH. :P Here's the link to it: http://www.freewebs.com/orchestrated/Phalanx.mid One extract I had in mind was from 38:21 to the end. This could make a good fighter's order theme. Feel free to listen to the whole thing if you have the patience. :P (PS: Does anybody have a copy of my old Kingdom MIDI, or even better my old Chapel MIDI? Those would be perfect Cleric and Mage order themes. I think I gave them to you guys way way early on in 2003 but I lost them when my old computer had to be rebooted. Either Firebrand or Ramborc would have to dig deep in to old backup archives of the time or somewhere to find them. Kingdom may be on my super-old 486 but Chapel sadly is lost forever)

"Weird World" is for me more of a shop song than one for a big city, I will check tegcan3 for the port city. The plains city is pretty big, it's the city that was built for SE back in 2001-2004, I'll just polish it a bit for the beta (probably not for the alpha). The name of the three orders are in the original Hexen manual, I think it was Arcanum, Legion and something (Church?). I think we can go with clichée songs here, i.e. something Christian sounding for the church, a march theme for the legion and some mystical-magical sounding stuff for the arcanum. For cutscenes, custom music would be needed, but for regular chapter beginnings and endings I think playing the same music adds more to consistency.

Whoops, the link actually should be http://www.freewebs.com/orchestratedchaos/Phalanx.mid But yeah, Ramborc and Firebrand if either of you can find the MIDIs Chapel and Kingdom from old KDev archives dating back to 2003 or 2004, I think those would be perfect themes for the cleric and mage orders. And To The East should work for a big plains city as well. (EDIT: Corrected URL)

What luck! I found that old Kingdom piece! http://www.freewebs.com/orchestratedchaos/Kingdom.mid It's actually not as I remembered but then again I haven't listened to it in almost 6 years. It could make a good mage's arcanum, or otherwise an evil enchanted place with lots of mysterious magic.

For Milestone 3, we have 7 maps and I'd suggest following music for this weekend's internal build: - port city : tegcan3 - desert village : dawn - 5 dungeon maps (necros hub) : Bsong (let's try it for all 5 maps and see which one(s) it suits)
