MAPs ideas

Alright, to make things clearer for the project, maps ideas and suggestions could be posted here, so the map maker can easily browse them. To begin with, I found these images in the new Conan's pc game that's been made, which can be used as inspiration for the villages/cities in SE and TSP (they are beautiful and so realistic for a fantasy action game...). Dunno if I should post the pics, so here are the links, check them out (specially you, RambOrc ): http://www.conangame.com/images/screens ... bour03.jpg http://www.conangame.com/images/screens ... bour01.jpg http://www.conangame.com/images/screens ... bour02.jpg http://www.conangame.com/images/screens ... lace01.jpg http://www.conangame.com/images/screens ... lace02.jpg Oh, yes!And some from the Thief's series: http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/gss/l ... creen4.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av17.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av18.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av29.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/ign2.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... ga-hi3.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av05.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av04.jpg http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/t2 ... s/av09.jpg

Well Thief looks rather crappy in my eyes (especially considering it was made with the Unreal engine)... OTOH that Conan game looks too good to be believed. Is it a completely explorable 3D world or you can't enter every place in the town. Do you have more info on this Conan game BTW?

Thief: I admit the screenies look scrapy, but the actua? game is really interesting, with great visual feeling (even without any fancy effect). The models look kinda strange in one frame, but have great animations and voice sounds. You should check it out. Conan: Don't have a clue about the actual game. I guess it's an action game with rpg elements, so you probably won't be allowed to knock on every door like in Betrayal in Antara. You can visit the site, but it doesn't have too much info, since the game is still being made. By LOOKING at it (of course I'm not sure) it looks like Heretic 2, with the 3d isometric view and all, but I guess we'll have to wait.

I think I asked this before, but can't remember the answer: How can I play a Map I'm aking with WadAuthor, without having to use the Play Map function it has. I have Hexen 95 installed, and since it has a launcher and not the actual Hexen exe, WadAuthor won't run the maps, and I can't take a inside look at them... The question is: how can I make a wad of levels only, so I can start it with Hexen's 95 launcher? Please help me out here.

The 4th Class

I take it the Hexen 95 launcher opens a window, asking for all the game parameters that must be entered before you get to play, right? If so, Doom 95 is the same. Here's what I do: Under the "Custom WAD File" parameter in the launcher, select your map. Although it may be frustrating to keep going back and forth from the launcher to WadAuthor, it still should work.
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 19:14:30

mago

Unfortunetly, it doesn't have the Custom WAD option... It just ask which wad you wanto to load, but the one I want isn't loaded - instead, it starts regular Hexen, ignoring the map I want to play... Anyway, in another subject, how can a guy check out RambOrc's Town Map. It's famous, but I still never took a look at it from inside...

1) download the SE beta 2) put Ramborcs map in the SE folder 3) run SE with -file town.wad in the cmd line.
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 19:23:32

RambOrc

You need to load it together with scatteredevil.wad into either our SE binary or into plain Vavoom (in latter case, you won't see the NPCs). BTW easiest way for any map test is to run them on Vavoom, it automatically creates GL friendly nodes and vismap. This makes it slower to run a test than in Doomsday, OTOH it works in software mode which is I guess the reason why you try to use Hexen 95.
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 20:02:51

mago

I still couldn't play... Somehow, Vavoom makes the game VERY slow, even in low resolutions... How can I set it to take advantage of my 3d card (Banshee PCI 16 mb)? How can I play custom wads in Vavoom? By writting on the command line? What about SE? I tried to load how Moose said and it just exited once i tried to start a new game... Still, I downloaded the file se.zip whose wad is dated of 18/6/2002, and it had a start screen saying SE "Alpha" and not Beta. Is this the issue?
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 20:09:01

Moose

Either should work, as far as I know. Was there an error message? if so what was it.
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 20:10:28

mago

No it just exited from the game...
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 20:17:09

mago

Wait, it sent me this message now: "R_TextureNumForName: AT0WN02 not found". Any ideas?
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 20:25:18

Moose

Sounds like it can't find one of the textures, what .wad files are in your SE folder.
Mon, 22 Dec 2003 23:02:19

mago

Only Hexen.wad and town.wad (along with town.bak or something like that).
Tue, 23 Dec 2003 07:50:15

dj_jl

Town map uses custom textures from ScatteredEvil.wad so you need it too.
Tue, 23 Dec 2003 09:02:40

mago

But it's there also, I was just referring to "outside" wads...

Finnally I was able to check the famous city, and damn, I was surprised! The city is AWESOME, the modelling seems so complicated that I can't imagine the work it must have been put on working with all those sectors... The buildings with interior were all very well built, I can imagine them working as the map is finished, and all the human life is placed. Seeing the city with my eyes made me want to really work on those NPCs, I just want to see the city working! PS: All I did was to download another SE wad, and replace the one in the SE pack with the new one.

You sure you talking about the crappy city map I made back in 2001?
Mon, 29 Dec 2003 16:25:52

mago

I odn't know about you, but it's the best city map for Hexen I've ever seen. With the finished work on buildings "skins", the placement of a good number of 3d models (furniture mostly) and the addition of living sprites in it, I can definetly see it as a damn good city map (because all the potential is there)!
Mon, 29 Dec 2003 16:45:49

RambOrc

I don't know... this far I always thought it's rather crappy and I should restart from scratch. But if you think it's cool, I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this so I can make up my mind.
Mon, 29 Dec 2003 20:07:40

mago

Well, the answer is simple: If you feel it would take too much time to complete what's been done, the way it was done, and you believe you can do something much better with your current knowledge/ability, then probably the best thing to do would be to drop this "in construction" map and go for the new one ASAP. But if you feel there isn't an insane amount of work left on the map, and you could ALSO complete it while making another one, then we could have TWO cities instead of one, which would be great! Another option would be to cut parts of the current map that would still need too much work, leave it to the new map, and complete the current one as a limited, yet already fantastic city (and thus have two instead of just one). In my point of view, if we could have the completed version of the current city map, with all details and architecture solved, I wouldn't ask for more.
Mon, 29 Dec 2003 23:08:27

RambOrc

Actually once I put the thatched roofs that city should look a lot more - it's greatest flaw is that everything is on the same floor level. But if time really permits (or we get some mappers), the new SE could well use several cities, this could be a kind of fortified city (it's got walls all around, after all). Dunno... until now I thought it's rather crappy, nobody ever said it looks good.

Do you think it would be wise if we write a newspost advertising for mappers to apply?

I agree with the idea. Since I'm in the team, there wasn't any mapper applying for Korax Heritage, and chances are that if we continue to wait, maybe n one will show up... I guess advertising about it wouldn't hurt.

Hmmm... We should probably wait for RambOrc's go... Untill I make my attempt of brutally usurp his leadership by force, he still has the last word.

Ah, just do it... I didn't make a news tool just so that I have to do the updating all the same.

Do you think I should go in and change the password to 'scattered evil' to give him a chance of getting in? Is you brother big then?

Up to 140 kgs (though he claims to be "only" 120).

And for those who can't read metric measurements, 140 kg is bigger than Homer Simpson (about 108 kg). BTW The news bulletin has been updated, and my password was changed, by me .

Hehehehe! Now getting back to topic, I have a map idea that i have put into a few drawings. It's "another" fortified city, with plants, a global perspective and some buildings in detail (external form). I'll try to scan and upload it tomorrow...

I think that city map is cool!! I like the way it's built, it still has some small details to pulish (textures, thing placements and stuff), but I really like the work you did Ramborc! . BTW the post thing was a good idea, check Doomworld, it has a news post about Korax Mod asking for mappers! , I think that will make a good thing for us!! let's hope the project gets a few more members .
