Mapping?!

Hi all.. I am not watching this cos i left to ET ( it is hard to watch anything else , if you are watching 2 Total conversions and making own mod..), but I still dont want to leave all nice raven games.. Map on screenshots are not using much Vavoom biggest feature : ligtmaps! you can make maps looks much more realistic by decrasing doom style lighting ( i thought it is defined by sectors ) to 0-50 ( it will be only small ambience ) then adding 1502 ( if i remmember correctly ) things and setting them propper colors .. BEWARE: This increases level load times ... It is really slow with moving objects , because vavoom recompiles lightmap for them It will look much effective , when you will add lights to place where they are casting shadows , and of course dont forget that lights in ambient places arent looking as good as ones placed on some colored texture.. Also dont forget to edit vavoom static lights definitions ( torches, lamps ..) because they are mostly using bad looking white lights.. Believe or not but tricky lighting will much improve game look even textures are not much detailed and geomethry is simple... BTW: Use vertex heights ( cant remmember number ) for making terrain , you can divide part of map to triangles and place there floor height thingies to make it bumpy ( it looks good ) I wonder i will find time to polish some more hexen maps ( like i did map1 ) So good luck with it ! And please take these things seriously , it will make it look really better!

Tell me about it. I'm working over 4 of my own mods, contributing to around 4, and watching lots

Hard work , I am editing source , making models , scripting all what is needed , making those damned UI files , and making 2D Art.. I wanted to do maps , but I havent learned it well ( it is pretty time consumation ) .. But as I said i would like to see nice lightmaps , plz try it ! Only drawback is really that it makes load time longer , but the look is much better However you must be always busy , four mods EDIT: Example WAD file ( copy link to navbar ) http://www.freewebs.com/jaquboss/hl1.wad However notice that Vavoom recompute lightmaps when something moves , so it needs improvment in engine ( this map can be really slow because that ) It is also a bit dark , i polished it a bit today to make it brighter , but still.. This is more demo than playable map , because lighting needs to be tuned , and a bit brighter maybe , maybe not.. And mainly slow due recompilation ..

Yep, colored lights make maps look a lot better. It becomes feasible only though once it can be pre-rendered and saved together with the map, like the GL nodes and the vis data is currently. Once that is possible, we'll add tons of lights to our maps. BTW your work looks good, aren't you interested in joining our team?

Yes, we are aware of the Vavoom engine limits for now, we will be working on bringing a solution for them and to improve some stuff for our MOD , it might take some time to do that, but we will surely make it . And for working on a lot of stuff, you are not the only one, heh! I'm also starting to work on some new stuff for Vavoom (mostly maps), some ZDoom skins I'm doing with Cheapalert and some other stuff, it's interesting to see more people coming to the forums again! BTW, your work is very good, I have been following the steps of the JHexen model pack, and I must say that you are doing a wonderful work there, I hope that when you finish it Vavoom is capable of doing some more stuff with models (interpolating and maybe particle effects for fire, etc.), let's hope it happens all in the right time so we can include more models, for now we are going to use 2d art for new weapons and stuff, as we don't have a modeller into the team, but believe me, they look better than a model, heh!

Well I can join , but beware : I am only on MSN ( no ICQ , never ) because my connection i cant play online I may havent time because ET my connection speed is bad.. I believe that my models arent so good.. Also right now i cant do MD2 models because QTIP is not good exporter ( i am now using 3ds max , not Q2 Modeller ( i cant believe i used that ) ) But it may change.. I have sense for lighting so these things arent hard for me I still can work with doom builder and i have my own Vavoom configs , so this is no problem , however my level desing is poor.. I can work with C ( or maybe C++ ) but not with any progs ( i may learn that if you will use them ) So if you want me , direct me somewhat please..

You don't have to know everything, this is a team and people have different skills. Also, most maps will be worked on by more than one team member, so if your talents lie in certain things on a map, other people are good in other things. And as for models, the first step would be to set up a couple of scenery models (like the tables and chairs converted from Hexen) in Vavoom, since we switched engine we still don't have a single model in the game.

Nice lights. I've given you access to the developer forum, you can check out some of the stuff we've got going on in mapping (premier example is the Winnowing Hall mod by Firebrand).

Please, feel free to download it and modify anything you want or give me suggestions on how to improve it too! I'll check out your new map now. EDIT: BTW, If you want to add me to your MSN list I connect sometimes too, we could talk about the work that you want to do, or you could post it in the DevForums, that's why they exist, just be sure to check them from time to time .
