looking for new wads

Anyone know of a good source for alternate wads for Hexen/Korax? A cursory search has produced numerous dead links, and what I have found is predominately deathmatch arenas. One excellent wad is "Caldera", a six level hub created ten years ago; it's quite a challenge with the more powerful critters of Korax ...I've yet to survive the final encounter - in a room with over a hundred monsters at a time (if I'm not killed the game crashes with one of those "lump" messages). I'd like to find some more like this. BTW, if anyone's familiar with Caldera, could you tell me if there's a cheat to get the book from the main library? This isn't mentioned in the walkthrough (though other cheats are - "puke" codes) and about half the time the book either doesn't appear or I end up with two copies of the "A" book and no "O" book. Don't know if this is a glitch with the original wad or some arcane interaction with Korax mod (and, of course, the authors ten year old email address is dead).

Well, regarding the topic, I've been advertising my own TC a great time recently. It's a puzzle-based RPG that involves lots of object-oriented puzzles, diologue between character and player, and attentional to human emotion. Admittedly the map design by itself is not as technologically advanced as Caldera, but overall I think they are more organically advanced (in the sense of ENVOKING a complex, deep and awe-inspiring landscape, rather than BEING it). Basically, if you enjoy non-D&D-style RPG, talking to NPCs in what is normally a purely kill-all-that-moves environment, and enjoy solving puzzles that depend on map structure (and not the other way around like original Hexen), give Dark Realms a shoot. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> One other mod to check out is Carnage Galore. Ichor comes here very frequently and he's probably the most creative programmer we've got. In his maps you will find fresh new weapons and monsters, and I guess other goody goodies. I guess the best way to learn more is to ask him, lol. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> As for the cheat you seek, personally I'm strongly against cheating even as a last resort, so I'd rather you set that particular goal aside and get back to it later. Though if you really can't resist temptation yes then you can check the scripts. Just open up a map editor and see if you can find the right scripts.

I don't normally resort to cheats (except for occasionally going into god mode and thrashing everyone in Hexen for a few minutes), but in instances where a game glitch prevents you from accomplishing something, or even continuing a level, a cheat may be the only alternative. Having played through this level of Caldera several times it seems about half the time this book glitch strikes; in my current game I have two copies of one book instead of one copy of each book - so I can go no further. I believe I have Dark Realms (an unfinished project, unlikely to be finished?), an initial run-through found few creatures to fight, though the puzzles were challenging. If this is the one I'm thinking of, it has nice graphics ...complex enough to actually cause a fps hit on my old Athlon2.4 (whether a result of the graphics or of the old programming core of original Hexen I don't know).

Yes, Dark Realms is not yet finished, no I do plan to finish it (the third hub definitely this year, the entire mod hopefully only shortly after <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->). Hope the lower-than-average enemy count doesn't take away from the entertainment, heh. As for the crashes you're experiencing, I'm afraid I don't know what could be causing it. <!-- s:? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!-- s:? --> What are you using to run the mod?

Looking forward to the finished wad; the docs in my download (from many months ago) implied there would probably be no further work on DR. Didn't have any crashes with DR, just the fps hit, mainly in rooms with many torches. Given the age of the basic Hexen code (12? 13? years), I attributed this to an innate inability to keep up with the extra graphics.
