Kdev cleanup

Umm, people, I have a rather serious request. Maybe we should re-organise stuff on kdev somehow? There are things like monster sprites which are completely ready, but put into different wads, which can be tricky to find (recently I occasionally stumbled upon red serpent and stone centaur sprites put into some wad, that was put into some archive, and so on). Also, some things seem to duplicate each other. Plus, there is stuff that is absolutely outdated and obsolete, like 2003th SE exectuables. Well, you've got the idea, I think. What if we create some folder(s) where all archives and ready stuff will be kept categorised, then delete all things unneeded? This will require digging through all the old archives, getting useful resources, then comparing similar by date, then excluding duplicates, and so on, but I believe it is worth it. If nobody wishes, I could commence doing this; will take a chance to check things I never saw yet, being relatively new team member .

Sure, go ahead. Just put stuff you think should be deleted into a designated folder and let people look at it before you kip it. Don't start this process right now though as I am about to move the files to another server soon, I will post here if it's moved.

Hehe, I found an archive with hungred or so screenshots from Jedi Academy in Camper's folder. EDIT: and also very cool tutorial map made by DarkRaven: http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... %20Map.zip It demonstrates some Hexen and Vavoom features, including breakable glass, simple polyobjects, 3dfloors, slopes and swimmable water. EDIT: And some weird screenies from some old SEGA Golden Axe or something in Firebrands folder

There's a lot of stuff there, it's been used as concept designs mostly , some of them won't see the light of day, while others are resting until they get developed, heh! If you want, you can start cleaning up KDEV, I don't have any problem, some time ago I made a cleanup of my folder, but as I said, there are some concept stuff in there that will be actually used in TSP and future projects, so whatever you see that you think it's not useful, let me know and I'll try to look at it ASAP .

I prefer not to remove anything from folder of those team members who are still here, since they can do it themselves. On the other hand, I decided to copy some of the stuff from Firebrands folder to generic resources folder I am building now (on my PC yet). BTW, I finally found a remake of Hexen maps made by Firebrand for TCS. They look like nice remakes, but they lack sky textures for some reason, I see a checkered box instead of normal sky.

That's odd , I think they also use skyboxes in MAPINFO, you could try to remove them (or download them from KDEV, if they use them, they should be around ).

I found there still seem to be duplicates in textures.wad for SE, I think some door patches duplicate each other. More, what if I make an archive of textures from Heretic, Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 that seem to fit SE more or less and upload it to kdev, so that everyone may review them and tell if any shouldn't be used.

Sounds good.

Since the move to another server is completed, I am going to return to both tasks mentioned above (planning cleanup & making a textures package) as soon as I have a free time. BTW, regarding cleanup, I have already reviewed about 50% of stuff or so.

Okay, the KDEV reorganization is nearly done (on my PC), what's left is to make some checks and optimize the folder structure. I was keeping all resources unarchived for a while to ease the comparisons between different versions of same item, but it is perhaps better to archive them all to save space. Currently total "reorganized KDEV" size is about 450 MBs : that includes lots of sprites, maps etc. The question is: how should I get all this to server? Should I create temp folder first and store everything there for a while, or start to replace old folders already? Regarding personal folders. 4thclass - moved everything to categorized "resources" folder (music mainly); folder removed. b0rsuk - contents moved to "resources"; folder removed. camper - some things moved to other places; folder removed. crimson - left as is. DarkRaven - partially moved to "resources"; folder left since looks nice as is. dj_jl - was nothing useful in it; folder may be left though in case Janis will need it. doomjedi - moved content to "resources", but folder may be left as is, since DoomJedi is still visiting us sometimes. firebrand - copied some stuff to "resources"; folder left as is. madPaul - folder has only 2 KA maps, but left as is (let it be). mago - moved many things to "resources"; folder left with some interesting stuff in it. moose - left as is. nightwolf - moved everything to resources; folder removed. ramborc - left as is. rolls - moved everything to resources; folder removed. sahadia - left as is. Stryker - left as is.

You have my blessing to reorganize things as described right away. Files that are already on the server don't need to be re-uploaded, they can simply be moved around.

[quote="RambOrc":2r4qjyb6]Files that are already on the server don't need to be re-uploaded, they can simply be moved around. That's easy to say but not too easy to do Many files are duplicates either different versions of each other and I already do not remember which are later/nicer (that is - from what folders I took the later/nicer version). Also, many files were stored inside wads/archives, sometimes in rather unorganized way. I may try to delete most "heavy" archives first before uploading anything to ensure there's enough space on server. By the way, do everyone have a backup of their impotant files on local PC?

As for reorganization, why not uploading everything as you have it to another folder in the server and then just deleting what is not useful? I think that if every duplicate files are deleted we'll save space for more useful things, also, I think we might need to keep this organization for the future, to avoid duplicating things again (I know this won't be easy to avoid myself).

Uploaded resources folder (approx 100 mb): http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev/resources/ I shall continue gradually replace old content.

LOL, I must confess that there is some stuff I haven't seen on all my time on the dev team..... all good work that can be used already!

Please notice that some links on these forums may become obsolete after changes I made. In most cases link target items should be still on server, but in different location. [quote="Firebrand":3fypmfi0]LOL, I must confess that there is some stuff I haven't seen on all my time on the dev team..... all good work that can be used already! Heh, that's exactly why I made all this reorganization.
