KA official release

RambOrc

KA is still targeted for a mid-May release, which is in two weeks. Camper has a working DM and team DM and is going to implement football (we've found the wadfile I was looking for so desperately, DarkRaven's post suddenly made a click in my mind and I remembered it was hockey and not football). Maybe even CTF might be implemented by the release date. On the mapping side, we've got 5 deathmatch/team deathmatch maps: Ancient Arena and Codex LE from DarkRaven and the 3 maps converted from Heretic. There is one map for football, the one from Hell's Surface. If CTF will be finished in time, the Seven Portals map will be converted to accomodate the special needs of CTF. What all these maps need is a rework of item placement, anyone who is interested in doing this please post here. On the character/weapon side, all 5 characters are fully working, Camper says the Cleric and the Mage have some weapons that still need new in-screen animations, who is going to do this? Another thing, weapons are IMO quite unbalanced right now, I'd appreciate if everyone could test them a bit and post suggestions on how to change damage or speed or weapon order etc. Title screen: who makes one? It doesn't have to be awesome, it can be replaced with something else in later releases. The HUD needs some minor visual enhancements, please talk to Camper aobut what exactly is needed (one thing I can say is the "A.C." title on the right, it should read "ARMOR" or "A.P." or similar). Manual: I'll write that, no prob (unless someone else wants to do it). Music: Lucas, you're on it, right? I need MP3s for every map, one each. Additional graphics (like those posters/banners): it'd be very cool but if there isn't enough time, let's just leave it. I hope I successfully covered all areas (if I left out something, feel free to post it).

Firebrand

I could finish work on the ORIGINAL Heretic maps, you could do the arena map (or someone else) <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> , also I can correct the Stat bar, but, it would be nice Camper could post here what's needed for it (besides the stuff posted here). I might be able to finish the banners before everything else is done (maps/stat bar), I actually corrected the first one I made and I'm working on the Doom guy poster right now, it may be ready in some time (still need to correct some stuff with it).

RambOrc

When placing items, make sure you include lots of ammo of all 3 colors, plus tons of Discs and Flechettes. Also, while I'd include weapon #8 only once, e.g. #3 and #4 should be IMO scattered at several places in larger maps. Oh yes and you should "wall in" all exit teleports, in the Docks and the Citadel just remove the wall switch, in the River of Fire I think it's only a linedef that makes you teleport out. KA first official release won't yet have a working map-to-map jumping, it still crashes (ask Camper for details why). And of course I can do any map, my own stadium one or any other, no prob (just upload the converted version to kdev). p.s. Can you show us the new poster?
Tue, 04 May 2004 23:14:22

Firebrand

OK, right now I won't be able to upload anything (I'm working on my laptop), but tomorrow you bet I give you some uploads <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> .

mago

What does the new in screen animations mean? What exactly is needed? I'm still working on the Witchaven guy... It will be difficult to work on the title screen while at it, but I'll give it a try (hoppefully I'll be able to work more this weekend).
Wed, 05 May 2004 14:39:32

DarkRaven

Will have the first official version of Korax Arena new powerup, I mean INVISIBILITY, like as in UT ???
Wed, 05 May 2004 15:54:32

RambOrc

Mago, I think it's better to release the first official KA version with 5 classes only, let's leave the Witchaven guy (and other classes) for future releases, since it'd mean too much stress for you and that's not worth it. I mean we've got 5 fully working classes and that's quite a lot already, I mean each class has twice as many weapons as the original Hexen had. Regarding powerups, I told Camper he forgot about them and should put it on his todo list (at the very minimum the pi damage should be included IMO).
Wed, 05 May 2004 20:13:45

The 4th Class

The following tracks have all been converted to audio: - KA theme - Heretic E1M1 - Heretic E1M5 - Heretic E2M3 - My Wutzitr - Hell Keep The only trouble is that the wav -> mp3 patch Cakewalk gave me SNAFU. I tried asking what else is wrong, but they are just the nicest newbe informers you will ever meet. <!-- s:x --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mad.gif" alt=":x" title="Mad" /><!-- s:x --> Firebrand I remember you told us you had a good wav -> mp3 converter you still use (Timitidy++, right?). By any chance could you post the link please?
Wed, 05 May 2004 20:28:03

RambOrc

I'd recommend using iTunes, I'm using that one lately for MP3 conversions (yes I know it's not really meant for that, but it can do that too).
Wed, 05 May 2004 20:48:34

Firebrand

Yep, the link is this: [url:1t4m55d6]http://timidity.sourceforge.net/ BTW, this URL is new for me too, I thought it wasn't being updated anymore, but it is <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> , it has the ability to convert MIDI music to OGG Vorbis format & MP3, but you need to read the instructions for it (of course, if you have any problem you can ask me <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> ).
Wed, 05 May 2004 22:36:57

Camper

(Ogg's are supported too) Mago: In-screen Weapon sprites for following weapons Cleric - Healing (Looks like Firestorm) Cleric - Poison Breath (Looks like Firestorm) Cleric - Ice Wand (Looks like Mage original Wand) Mage - Maulotaur (Looks like Arc of Death) Mage - Horrible Pain (Looks like Arc of Death) ?Fighter - Powered Up Ripper (Looks like normal Ripper)? ???Fighter - Darkness (Looks like Hammer of Retribution)??? ?Heretic - Powered Up Phoenix Rod (Looks like normal Phoenix Rod)? ?Heretic - Powered Up SkullRod (Looks like normal SkullRod)? As for the Stat bar, it just look a bit strange at the right side.
Wed, 05 May 2004 22:40:09

RambOrc

IceWand sprites should be in one of the wadfiles I thought, or did Moose never upload that ScatteredEvil.wad he used? There is an in-game screenshot with the IceWand which Moose made so he should have all the images. Moose, can you pass it over to Camper? Whoa I still can't believe we've got a working KA with all this stuff, it's been happening all so fast. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->
Thu, 06 May 2004 16:20:49

Firebrand

I think the wad file with the ice wand is somewhere in my HD, I can upload it (when I find it, heh!), Mago, I would like to know which weapons are you going to do? I think we could modify the Dragon Claw from the fighter by just changing the way the arm holding it looks (it can have different effects depending who holds the weapon?), I don't know what that Darkness thing is?? what is the effect it has?? For the powered Phoenix Rod we could make it have fire all around the weapon, and the powered Skull Rod could have some redish bright within it.
Thu, 06 May 2004 17:02:44

Firebrand

I just remember that I would like to suggest that we should implement the volcano traps from E2M3 to the code, I think it would make a nice addition to the map. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
Thu, 06 May 2004 17:10:30

Ichor

ACS scripting can do that, and you can just add a volcano sprite if you need to have something from which the fireballs spew.
Thu, 06 May 2004 17:15:15

DarkRaven

Don't forget to decrease the speed of all characters, mainly the speed of fighter, may be to 60%!! <!-- s:shock: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt=":shock:" title="Shocked" /><!-- s:shock: --> It will be cool, when in Korax Arena will be functions like weapon stay, frag limit, time limit, team damage and binding wepons 9 and 0 (flachete and disc of repulsion) to some other keys, because how it is now is very uncomfortable <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->
Sat, 08 May 2004 12:07:27

mago

As for the new weapon sprites: If it's only modifications of the original weapons, I think I can work on them all, Firebrand. Since I don't have to convert the Wtchaven guy for now, I'll have more time to do this, and try to work on the title screen. I'll try my hand on the new weapons today, and if I see that it's too hard or time demainding, 'll ask for help!
Sat, 08 May 2004 13:29:50

Firebrand

OK, I have actually uploaded the dragon claw for the fighter and the powered up Phoenix Rod and Hell Rod, they are in weapons.zip into subdir "karena" in the FTP if you are interested.
Sat, 08 May 2004 13:32:06

Firebrand

I have been playing Arena for a while in the custom maps we have and I noticed that after a while sprites and objects start blinking all over the map, the only solution I can think for this is to make death corpses disappear from the map when they are there for a certain time amount, that way memory would free for other stuff (of course this is my personal opinion).
Sun, 09 May 2004 18:26:09

RambOrc

This is a bug in current Vavoom netcode. Until Janis rewrites it, it'll be a prob in KA. But removing all corpses after a short time should help it, I guess.
Mon, 10 May 2004 22:02:47

RambOrc

DarkRaven, how are you coming along? When do you think will both your maps be ready?

Sonds good... I'll upload the football stuff later this week, it's not working very well yet but it's FUNNY. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> Just a bit of info for everyone on the team, seeing the state of things right now and how untested a lot of things are, I suggest to do next week an official announcement that is sent to Doomworld, RavenGames etc and to make the website section and a freely available public beta release, but not call it first final release. I hope a lot of people will check it out and play it and post in the forums about their findings, so that we can wrap it up and release KA 1.0 final sometime in June or July. Oh yes, Janis, do you have an estimation about when you're going to rewrite the Vavoom netcode? Next 1-2 months, next half year, later?
Sat, 15 May 2004 18:31:29

RambOrc

I took a look at all 5 maps today, they're all nice. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> I felt there is too little ammo in Codex, might be only my personal taste though. Also, I find the posters hilarious, I think every map should have them. Firebrand and DarkRaven, could you work together to put those posters into all maps? I'll add them to my football map too. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev/ramborc/football.zip">http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... otball.zip</a><!-- m --> Currently, you need to use the Fighter's Gauntlets to punch around the ball, Camper already finished a version in which you can kick it around without using any weapon, but he haven't uploaded the binaries yet. Firebrand, feel free to enhance the map with posters and the like and re-upload it. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> Make also a score table, camper says if you make the textures like in cannon.wad with the numbers on them, he can make a script that'll always display the latest score of both teams on the scoreboard (more details from him).

The 4th Class

Hey that's a pretty cool stadium, RambOrc, I like it a lot. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->
I felt there is too little ammo in Codex, might be only my personal taste though. We talked over the problem for a long time (I&madPaul) and we have come to the conclusion that the current state with mana isn't good <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> Why? Blue-15[/color:1dlrfmju] Green-15[/color:1dlrfmju] and Red-20[/color:1dlrfmju] ??? I'd to do these new items: Big blue mana,Big green mana,Big red mana. It would be very good <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

RambOrc

I didn't know about this discrepancy with mana. Camper?
Tue, 18 May 2004 17:55:07

Camper

I didn't change the amount, only the classification. Meaning: Combined Mana was worth 20 Blue and 20 Green Mana. Lowering or Increasing the values is not a problem. Adding new BigMana stuff neither.
Tue, 18 May 2004 22:34:24

Firebrand

I'll give a check to the map and make some changes for it, I'm back to school this week, my schedule this period really sucks (I might have some free time tomorrow and on Friday <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> ).
Tue, 18 May 2004 22:35:16

Ok Firebrand, try it! The new values: Small R[/color:gnkc8l48]G[/color:gnkc8l48]B[/color:gnkc8l48] mana - 15 and Big R[/color:gnkc8l48]G[/color:gnkc8l48]B[/color:gnkc8l48] mana - 30 It should have been optimal or has anybody any other opinion <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: -->

RambOrc

What about 20 and 50? Don't forget mana types fuel 3 different weapons each, so you'll use a lot more of one kind of ammo than in other games. What I was also thinking about is to increase the amount of max mana the player can carry about, to 300 or 400. That way, weapon ammo usage could be even more fine-tuned, from tiny weapons that use only 2 mana for a shot to ultimate weapons in slot #8 that use 250 mana for a single shot (like the Marine's BFG). Oh yes and public beta release and announcement is targeted for the middle of next week, I think we'll be able to make it. What needs to be done is: - weapon table, listing each weapon's mana usage and damage (Camper) ==> Camper do it ASAP because some weapons are absolutely unbalanced and without such a table nobody in the team can discuss how to adjust them! - uploading the latest version of Ancient Arena and Codex (DarkRaven) - new mana sprites (Firebrand) - making the score table digit graphics for the football map, enhancing the football map with the posters and passing it back to RambOrc (Firebrand) - adding ammo and weapons and some final touches to the football map (RambOrc) - making in-game screenshots of KA (anyone who makes even a couple of screens and sends it to me is nice) - making the website section about KA and the new forum (RambOrc) - the manual and readme (RambOrc) - packaging the distribution (Camper)

DarkRaven

20 and 50 or 15 and 30 it's all the same to me (it does not matter). I was also thinking about increase the amount of max mana,RambOrc. Yep, Marine's BFG is nice mana feeder <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> 1.Level-100 2.Level-150 3.Level-200 4.Level-225 5.Level-250 6.Level-275 7.Level-300 In my opinion 300 should be max limit <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->
Wed, 19 May 2004 10:44:14

RambOrc

The current system (ever since KMOD 1.0) is that the max mana is always the same, but when you gain new levels, your weapons use less mana. This system has the additional advantage in deathmatch that a higher level character can not only make more shots with full ammo, but also that he gets more ammo out of the same mana crystal. AFAIK currently mana usage for all weapons decreases by 10% whenever you gain a new level, meaning a level 6 character uses half the ammo than a level 1 character, i.e. he gets double the ammo out of the same mana crystal. This is why in KA a player who gets busted in deathmatch has a lot better chances after respawn than in other games, which creates a new kind of balance (this balance is even further changed by a just now respawned level 6 character being able to pick up a BFG right away, being an instant big danger for any level 2 character with lots of ammo).
Wed, 19 May 2004 11:27:47

Ichor

The way I have mine set up is like this: Blue Mana - 15 Green Mana - 15 Combined Mana - 20 of both types Large Blue Mana - 50 Large Green Mana - 50 Large Combined Mana - 60 of both types Maximum mana set at 300 Now, I know that you'll have three mana types, so how about Red Mana being just like the other two types (15 for small, 50 for large), and the Combined Mana would affect all three types (20 for small and 60 for large). It would have to be a different color (maybe gold or white). Also, I was thinking about the Red Mana being black with a red symbol so that it looks less like the Combined Mana and more like the other two. There's a mana sprite used in Wolfen, which could make a decent Red Mana after some slight alterations.
Wed, 19 May 2004 14:56:33

Firebrand

I think I fixed the red mana sprites according to what you say Ichor, I can make a new combined mana sprite too, I have make the football map to look a bit more like a stadium (you'll see what I mean later <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> ) I'll work a bit on the score table later too! <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

RambOrc

Just a quick update, we've been doing some beta testing with Camper, and also went through the weapon table and made quite a lot of modifications to it. Two weapons are also going to be replaced, the Cleric's Healing with a Hold Monster spell, and the Mage's Maulotaur spell with the Tornado spell of the Iron Lich (from Heretic). The Maulotaur figurine will be a powerup that can be picked up by any player. Also, now the Fighter's melee weapons (hammer, axe) can't be used any more if you don't have ammo for it. Mago, how does it look with the new version of the Korax logo (with the additional guys for it)? Do you think you can finish it within a week or so? If not, no prob, I'll just use the current 3-guy version for the KA title screen. Firebrand: I liked the new version of the stadium map a lot. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> One small thing, in the corners with the Korax logo it'd look better if the patch would be put on the same texture as the wall of the arena (currently it's on a different background). Also, how does it look with the digit textures for the scoreboard? 4th class, how does the e-guitar recording go? Any chance it might be ready for next week? If not, don't worry, it'll be fine for the final release (in 1-3 months after public beta release) just as well. I'd appreciate some good screenshots of KA, that'd save me some time (which I won't have much next week).
