KA noobs?

i'm posting this because i'm curious as to how your going to handle the noobs and llamas that will undoubtedly appear on korax arena when it's released. i'm talking about the people who have some perverse pleasure when they ruin other player's games. i'm also posting this because the forums seem far to quiet, outside of the internal development stuff.

Cannot say for others, but I am going to handle them by their legs above large fire pit <!-- s:twisted: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt=":twisted:" title="Twisted Evil" /><!-- s:twisted: -->

Actually, I haven't thought about this yet, given that KA will probably not have that many active players and so my focus was more on making bots good enough. But if it is a concern, let's hear about the possible forms this party pooping could take so we can build in safeguards to stop it. Meaning post away possible problems you foresee, how such llamas would ruin others' game.

Now that's a word I haven't seen before in this context. What do you by "llama?" Not the long-necked animal, eh? <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> Also, I don't really know why you're making such a fuss over newbies. It's not like they'd do anything malicious to the code or anything. And even if they did, nobody would be moronic enough not to download official KH version. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

"llama" is a l33t expression for "lame", "lamer", "lameass" etc. "n00b" (not "noob" BTW) comes from "newbie" in leetspeak but has a more contemptous meaning than just someone being "new" and "green" - it also means he's a moron/an idiot for being a newbie. Then again, leetspeak is originating from anti-social geeks so what else would you expect. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

It'd be more easier to answer on the question if I knew what we should await from such "anti-social persons".

Anyway, here's a few things they could do to wreak havoc on the servers: 1. Flooding/DoS type attacks 2. Exploiting bugs that might crash the server 3. Cheating/autoaiming/speed cheats 4. Abusive language and attitude 5. Shooting or killing teammates in a team game

I don't think there'll be 24/7 game servers for KA, more like someone setting one up on his PC, so 1 is pretty much out and 2 doesn't matter much. 5 should be taken care of by friendly fire settings, 4 is no problem as there is no chat function in KA, and I'm not sure how someobdy could create those under 3. Bring them on so I can knock them all out. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

llama comes from leet speak? wow. i just use it because i think llamas are evil. anyhoo, you've settled my mind about this, thanks.

Also, if some kind of further problems are discovered or exploited, we could create a new version of the executable and take out any bugs found <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->, so you shouldn't fear my friend <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->.

In Skulltag a llama means a person who frags a player while typing a message.

well, since this project is based on open source code, i don't think that people would be to much inclined to create cheats or codes. Usually it is respected the work that people like the KH team do. And the people that actually use cheat are far too mentally handicapped to create their own. btw, checked the forum after a long time, nice to see new members and activity here ^^

When I was playing Quake2 with my friends in computer club (several years ago) I usually killed players who were standing typing a message <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->, probably because - 1) I am very evil <!-- s:twisted: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt=":twisted:" title="Twisted Evil" /><!-- s:twisted: --> 2) Chatting during the battle is not good! <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> (as in REAL battle btw)

I like the conversational aspect of multiplayer. One of the things that makes the game fun is knowing that you're playing with other intelligent human beings instead of limited AI entities. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

*Giggle* well, I prefer to chat IRL. Or, at least, on a forum. <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt=":roll:" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: --> Well, ok, usually when I need to say something in game I do this when I'm fragged or try to find a silent dark corner where nobody could easily see me. As for chatting players - how may I leave them behind while they simply may stop chatting at once and shoot at my back?

Chatting is good in games like WoW but IMO doesn't make sense in games like KA or UT.

the best thing for the problem then may be an option for turning on/off chat in the server you host. and yeah, same here as in shooting people who don't have the common sense to wait till dead or at least hide. another option would have macros like 'incoming flag' or 'enemies attacking flag' for cumminication. but it wouldn't help if your being more elaborate, like two players, one distracting while the other yoinks the flag.
