How to make skins, maps and new enemies?

Wed, 11 Sep 2002 15:23:15

Evil Mage

Simple as that. What are the best tools used to make maps in Hexen to support the KMOD engine/JHexen Engine/Vavoom engine? Also, I wanted to make/edit the exsisting skins on some characters. How would I go on this? And, I want to add a few new characters to the game. How would I do this aswell? As mentioned, this would be something compatible to either/all of the 3 engines I just spoke about. Thnkx. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

WadAuthor might be your best bet for map editing. Both Vavoom and KMOD has a custom config file for Hexen so that you can add all stuff specific to them. AFAIK there's no such config file for the new jHexen XDG (or what its name was again). If you mean the skins on the MD2 models, you can edit them with just about any Quake II skinning tool. Adding new characters: it requires editing source code AFAIK.

Alright, so how do I edit the attacks to add new effects to them? Or maybe add a new attack altogether?
Wed, 11 Sep 2002 16:36:18

Moose

AFAIK adding new characters, weapons, attacks all need to be done with the code so you need to know some C++. p.s. Why you asking? You thinking of making a TC?

Evil Mage

Ok, now is AFAIK the program name or the initials of some slang/saying like: IMO=In My Opinion? And yes I just want to skin the characters to make them look better. And edit some attacks on the characters to make them have a new effect and also make maps that I love in Hexen. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

AFAIK = As far as I know. And C++ is the programming language used, for maps use WadAuthor as Ramborc said, their are others out their but wadauthor is the only one that can use the Vavoom plugin AFAIK.

Same goes for the Korax "plugin" (=config file).

Don't think you missed anything but but 'plugin' I mean config file for wadauthor that allows you to use the specials for KMod (e.g. shops). I like it when I confuse people it makes me all happy and warm inside, that and it put a smile on my face.

Ok..well why not just DL KMOD 2.2 for it? Or does 2.2 miss somethings that I don't know of?ooooh.. <!-- s:shock: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt=":shock:" title="Shocked" /><!-- s:shock: -->

Also, here is the file for anyone interested... just replace your existing file with this one (I'd backup the original first if I were you). <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.korax-heritage.com/downloads/hexen.wcf.zip">http://www.korax-heritage.com/downloads/hexen.wcf.zip</a><!-- w --> Don't be surprised if it's not very nice-looking, it's a development config file not really intended for public use (strange object names, not the right images in the preview panel, etc.)

RambOrc

If you code stuff for the latest jhexen engine and want to port it to KMOD, you might run into a similar amount of probs than when trying to port to Vavoom. Dunno how good legacy support in jhexen is, if it's strong then starting on KMOD and porting it to the latest jhexen version might prove relatively easy. Then again, I don't really think there's much of a legacy support in jhexen at all, its compatibility with itself over time is rather woeful. RambOrc

OK OK, you won... the idea behind KMOD 2.5 is - besides including a couple of very small fixes that would've made a 2.21 release I decided against - is to add a couple of Scattered Evil features that make sense in KMOD as well (like the damage skins for select monsters). Gameplay and feeling of KMOD won't be changed in any way, it'll just have a couple more flashy effects (actually, to tell the truth, the only defined effect as of now is the damage skins mentioned above). As for release date, it'll come out 1-2 months before the final release of Scattered Evil (which'll be about the same time when the internal Alpha test phase begins). Satisfied? <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
