For those who just can't get enough of oldschool FPS/RPGs...

Amulets and Armor! http://www.abandonia.com/games/655/down ... sArmor.htm I know, the name is stupid. Disregard most of the review, too. It was his first one and he was pretty harsh; the game is far better than he gives it credit. It's pretty old, but should run in DOSbox just fine. Does for me and it seems most others, at least. Just trying to share the love and breathe a little more life into the forums!

Another one "abandoneware" website? Good, I gather such links. I've heard about A&A, people said it's interesting, but I never played it, only saw couple of screenshots. BTW, about FPS/RPG. Have anyone played Ultima Underworld (1 or 2) by Looking Glass? I was astounded by the 2nd game, and replayed it several times; it was SO vivid and alive, that you forget it was made in 1992 . It would be wonderful if we had a remake in modern graphics, I suppose. EDIT: Heh, here it is, on that site: http://www.abandonia.com/games/360/down ... Worlds.htm EDIT: Wow, someone seems to give it a try - http://uwadv.sourceforge.net/ Looks very weird though, absolutely not the thing I would like to see.

Wow those Ultima screenshots are beautiful, the kind of 2D fantasy art I so sorely miss these days.

Crimson Wizard

The game was very special in physics, by the way, such as realistic item throwing/dropping; for its time it was an amasing achievement I suppose. It also had a feature I never met anywhere since - while swimming (yeah, you could swim in that game! ) player's view bobbed and shaked. You had to eat, you had to drink, you had to sleep, you could do fishing if you manage to find a fishing-rod... Aahhh, you rarely may find such a game nowadays.

I believe I have Ultima somewhere in my old basement, just haven't dug it up in 10 years. These days I'm really addicted to The Lost Vikings, and Tyrian. I also really want to play Shadow Of The Beast, though that's for the Amiga and I don't have one. Never tried A&A, but I may give it a try one of these days.

Once Korax' Heritage is done (heh I know it might be in 20 years from now or never), it'd be cool to work on an old-school RPG of the 1990s type where 2D art and storytelling are the most important aspects of the game, not flashy 3D effects like in many modern RPGs.

Why not make such game ourselves, you know, from scratch?

Here's another not too well-known RPG oldie: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/exile/winexile.html Don't be scared by the flashy graphics, they suck, but the version I have (I got it from a 150-in-1 shareware games CD) looks much better. And the graphics are all bitmaps by the way. It is shareware, but I think it's worth it. I specially like how well written the dialouges and the specials are (cutscenes and the such are all text)

I played it a little. In fact it's overall look gave me a hope that I can make an RPG too.

Wow, I remember Exile. I originally got it from a 150-in-1 games CD, too! Possibly the same one? Fun to note, the company is actually STILL ALIVE! They make a few more games, and still sell full remakes. I thought they still had full versions of the older ones, too... Mostly, I was really happy a company from my youth was still around, and I love to see a small-time company actually making it. Also, agreed, Ultima Underworld was great. So was the whole series, for that matter. A very similar game that's probably on my top 10 games of all time is System Shock. The sequel is just as good, and perhaps even better if you prefer more actual RPG elements. There's even another spiritual sequel, Bioshock, set for release this month (I can't wait)! If you like SS2, Deus Ex could be up your alley as well. For people who dig melee combat, there's always Witchaven, or if you like newer, prettier, NOT-CAPSTONE games, there's Rune: Viking Warlord. Run actually reminds me of another great old gem (that I also got from that 150-in-1 CD! Surprising the actually GOOD stuff you can find on those considering how cheap they are, and how MOST of it is crap. At least, the older stuff, back when shareware and small companies thrived in the computer business. The newer ones probably suck) is Champions of Zulula. http://www.christianboutin.com/osparchive/ has that and a few other neat games. Geez, I did it again. Once you get me started it's hard to stop me. Hell, let's just turn this into an "awesome old and similar games" thread.

Actually, I misjudged the size. "1000+ Great Games", yellow CD. I might open it back up, actually. Sure, you had to sift through a lot of crap, but there was some good stuff in here, too! Well, most of them are russian sites, here're only two english-language ones: http://www.agamesroom.com/ (currently down, but they say they will reopen after some time) http://www.infamous-adventures.com/ (not abandonware actually, but remakes of old adventure games) You may also try this one, perhaps you'll manage to use it since game categories (and titles ofcourse) are in english. It also may have strict limitations for non-russian IPs's. It has many games there, though I have big doubts some of them are available legally : http://old-games.ru/

Thanks! I know Google translator is iffy at best, but I can understand badly translated, broken english well enough to get around. (Who says playing all of those old Japanese games never helped me?)

Also, you guys have forced me to reinstall the Ultima Underworld games. Great, now I'm never going to get any work done, thanks...

Holy cow Exile! I drove my friend over the phone crazy with the loud obnoxious screaming that comes from that game when your characters die lol! A good game I remember was something called Realmz (I believe done by the same people that made exile). Me and my cousin got really addicted into it but it was just the shareware and after we did all the missions (ending by killing a bunch of giant spiders and their huge spider lord) there was nothing left to do and no way to get the full version.

Heh, I remember it's looking cute, but until you start going for quests in dungeons. I don't know why Bethesda did this, but monsters there spawn vey often and randomly and sometimes even close to player. I got tired of that very soon and leave playing.
