Enabling Korax in new Doomsday versions

Hi all, Korax rocks so hard it really doesn't make any sense. I have a question however: is there some way to load Korax 2.2 into the latest versions of Doomsday? Thanx <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) --> Peace, Opiatesoul

Sorry to say, but not a single one... Korax Mod is based on jHexen 0.9x which is absolutely incompatible with jHexen 1.x. We aren't any happier about it than you are, but there isn't much we can do about it short of writing the whole mod once again.

And besides, the main difference between the two versions is that JHexen 1.X uses MD2s and JHexen 9.X does not, and maybe better lighting. Since the Korax mod (both 1 and 2) already uses MD2s, I seriously doubt that anyone will spend several months to configure KMOD to work with the lastest version of JHexen just so a few torches would look better or to have a few new effects.

Well I wouldn't port it to the latest Doomsday even if it'd be only a little work... I downloaded a jHexen distro a couple of weeks back and this one is crashing all the time on a GeForce 3... previous versions were crashy and erratic on 3Dfx, Matrox and ATI cards, but worked fine on nVidia... and it's not my machine as I have yet to see the first crash in ANY commercial game... <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->

Well *I* originate from Budapest, Hungary, and if you want to say that place is where ogres come from, I might agree with you as that's a real cesspit full of assholes... If you mean my avatar, it's from a Citadel fantasy game AFAIR.

hm...I wonder if someone ever thought of making a new engine accellerator for Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem...those are fun games aswell.

Don't count on me, I hated the Build engine already back in the mid-90s. It might have some fancy features on paper but offers a useless gameplay, especially on lower-end machines. BTW Witchaven and Witchaven 2 used this engine too (and they at least had some half-acceptable artwork).

Don't make me send my Heresiarch at you for not working RambOrc. Now start working on that new engine for me. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Well I couldn't even if I wanted, I'm no programmer. The only one around here with enough knowledge to code such an engine is Janis, and if you succeed in pulling him into a Build port and thus draw him away from Vavoom and Korax' Heritage, I'll kill you. <!-- s:evil: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_evil.gif" alt="" title="Evil or Very Mad" /><!-- s:evil: -->

MANY people tried to get the source code for build, but the creators stubbornly refused to release it. <!-- s:evil: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_evil.gif" alt="" title="Evil or Very Mad" /><!-- s:evil: --> As far as build games being crap, I have one word: Blood. Heh, I kinda did it myself. Simply I got a new job in Game Studio (and Vavoom was one of the things that helped me to get it), so game development now is my primary job. And I have really little time to work on Vavoom and Korax' Heritage. <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: -->

Hello all! I'm the newest newbie here, but I am hardened veteran of Hexen. KMOD is one of the best ideas I've seen with Hexen. I just wonder, why didn't Raven and id do it that way in the first place? Not the graphics I mean, mind you, cause I know that it wasn't until about 2 or 3 years ago that Open GL really reached mainstream. I'm talking about the point enhancement and spell system of KMOD. KMOD makes Hexen rock even more! I can't wait for Scattered Evil to be released! Quick question: Is Scattered Evil being done with jHexen 1.x in mind?

Off Topic- Hello. It's me again. Just testing my avatar pic. And don't worry, I'm not racist one bit if you're wonderin' about my choice of pic. Want proof of it? I sing in a choir here at my school where half the members are black! I think that speaks for itself.

Off Topic- This is Avatar test number 2. If you are concerned about choice of pic, read my last post for explanation.

I have no idea why avatar uploading is not working (I guess it's becuz of the PHP settings), so I just switched it off to avoid all those broken image links. You can still choose one from the standard gallery (yeah, they are lame), or link to a remote pic. As for jHexen 1.x, as said many times before it's about as far compatible with jHexen 0.9x as Vavoom, and if we'd even port KMOD or SE to any other engine than rather the more feature rich one (Vavoom). Anyway, the important enhancements of jHexen 1.x over 0.9x are 3D model support (we do have it in our custom Korax engine anyway), working multiplayer (SE doesn't have any multiplayer at all), high-res true-color texture support (we don't have any such textures), more flashy light effects (so that it'll be even slower), more flashy menus (what a terrible loss, especially that we'll alter most menus ourselves for SE) and an even lower graphics card compatibility list (jHexen 0.98.3 was the last that worked on a Voodoo2, 0.99.x was still OK for Matrox G400 but a no go for 3Dfx and ATI, and 1.x is crashing all the time even on a GeForce 3). I hope this list of arguments settles this question once and for all. Not to mention KMOD/SE/Arena/TSP are about gameplay and not about graphics. Compared to Rune, RTCW or Unreal II jHexen 1.x looks just as lame as jHexen 0.9x (or, for that matter, Vavoom). <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: -->

And coding for JHexen .99X is easier (to me anyway), with none of those DED files to contend with.

RambOrc, I've been able to use run Doomsday 1.7.2 w/ jHexen 1.x, and I haven't had any problems other than occaisional bog down, and that was because of my video hardware. My PC specs: Pentium III (Coppermine) at 1GHz 127 MB RAM Win98 SE Video: Intel 82815 on board video chip (VRAM unknown). I do know that it probably doesn't have a lot of VRAM (more like close to none maybe), because whenever I've played Quake 2 in OpenGL mode on this machine, any res beyond 640x480x16 would put my framerate in the toilet. And this a PIII running at 1.0GHz! It proved to me just how important a good video card is today (most of the games I played until recently were from the pre-OpenGL days, when CPU horsepower alone was enough to get the job done). I'm on a poor-man's budget however, so I don't plan on upgrading my video card anytime soon unless I do some digging for a good used one.

One more thing everybody. If you're lazy like me and like the OS giving you detailed info on program crashes, don't switch to WinME. WinME doesn't give you any technical info whatsoever when a program crashes. Because of that, and also because I occasionally still run DOS software, I'm staying with Win98 SE.

RambOrc

A 400 MHz Celeron with a GeForce 2 MX would give you way greater speeds in any 3D games released since '98 than your current config does. You might just find such a trade when you don't have to pay a single buck in the end.

I know I've got way more than enough processor power. Whenever I play WinQuake, I'm able to run at 1024x768 resolution with what looked like better than TV framerate smoothness. It's just my on board video that's being my current bottle neck. I'm going to start keeping an eye out for a used that has a good, fairly recen card in it so I can rip that card out and stick it in my current system. Sound isn't a problem though, as I've got my sound card hooked up a big Pioneer home stereo system in my dorm room that's powerful enough that people at the other end of the hall can hear it when I have turned up with the door open. <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

Off-topic In case you're wondering where I got the stereo from, it's my parents old stereo system that they gave to me when I left for college.

I just re-read this thread and noticed this question was never answered: [quote="nwwoods":3e9xq1ln]Is Scattered Evil being done with jHexen 1.x in mind? The answer is no... Scattered Evil uses an engine that evolved from the KMOD engine, but all the enhancements have been done by the Korax team and none of it is new Doomsday code. If anything SE will be even less compatible with Doomsday 1.x than KMOD is.
