The time has come! I uploaded on ftp server my newest deathmatch map. It called Ancient Arena[/color:3k5o6hon]. I hope you like it But i was limited by Vavoom, because i couldn't put some Things on the 3D-floors (e.g. Health Vial or Blue and Green mana, etc...) It isn't realized in version v115_2beta3

Excellent map, definitely nothing of my mapmaking threshold. I especially enjoyed the spiderweb-like platform at the centre, and the small swimming pool was really cool too. BTW I'm still trying too, and pressing F5 and Y just to keep my hopes up.

We are working together on the next vavoom map: Codex of Wisdom[/color:19qtsx77] (yep, from UT). madPaul works for us on another very, very good vavoom dm map RambOrc! , another mapper is here! So DarkRaven, any style in particular you'd prefer for the Ancient Arena theme song?

Hmmm.. so, actually i don't know I'll think about theme song.

I'd use Deepr for that map.

Whats lite about the Codex map you uploaded?
>In our Codex is not many, many of details (sloping doors and walls, etc..)
Sun, 07 Mar 2004 18:27:02

Moose

Oh ok, still it's very good. I noticed one of the areas with water didn't have swimable water, is it ment to be like this. Lucas has dark realms changed much since the demo? If so then sure I'l love to play it, but Ramborc can blame you if I stop programming for a few more weeks .
Sun, 07 Mar 2004 20:40:32

mago

Codex is extremely good, and it sure seems like a place to have enjoyable battles with axes and spells! I like it's big size, the rooms and alternative paths (elevators). Very, very nice, DarkRaven! As for Dark Realms, I'm a big fan of this "episode" - you sure have my vote to upload it on koraxdev, Class.
Sun, 07 Mar 2004 23:05:24

The 4th Class

Yes Dark Realms has changed quite a bit; I've fixed a few bugs here and there, and there is a new level in the first hub. I must warn you, however, that when it comes to mapmaking I'm a lazy slacker. So sadly if you want to see MAJOR changes you'll have to wait until the end of the month - when Hub two should be finished and Hub one perfected .

DarkRaven

Work on maps is continuing... BTW Do you see Cain's work ? I think it's EXCELLENT,isn't it?
Wed, 10 Mar 2004 17:38:52

Firebrand

I really think that Cain's work on the model pack it's very good, I really like the amount of detail on the models they are very well done, they still need a bit of work on the skins, but they look very good. And about the maps you are doing, they are really cool, I may be working on some new textures for them, if you ever have any ideas for textures, please tell me or mago and you'll surely have them .
Wed, 10 Mar 2004 20:24:59

The same goes for map themes too. Give me some suggestions and I'll whip up a classic one!

Is there any way how to import texture larger than XXXx128 into a WAD file ??? I'd need import texture 256x256 ,but Wintex throw the error message: Bad Bitmap size. Why can't be realized Y axis greater than 128 Will you help me? (Firebrand )
Sun, 21 Mar 2004 12:26:26

Firebrand

I think XWE or DeepSea is what you need, they allow textures bigger than 256x256 to be inserted into the WAD (I'm not very sure of it though), but if you want, you can send me the map to my mail addres firebrand@korax-heritage.com and I can give it a check.
Sun, 21 Mar 2004 19:56:52

DarkRaven

Yeah!, in XWE it's possible . Thanks,Firebrand. During of the next month I'll upload my latest vavoom's deathmatch map (and my friend madPaul too) (I dare say)

I don't remember well, but I think that the karena.wcf doesn't has some stuff commented on it (check it out if you want), I will upload a fixed version I did myself.

Spelling ability differs from person to person, but it is greatly influenced by the amount of literature read. I speak three languages on the same level, all somewhat crappy, but I can spell each one of them better than most native speakers exactly because I've read a lot of classic and modern literature in all 3 languages.

I just uploaded Ancient Arena and Codex (Korax Arena versions). They are in subdir "KArena". You'll need also my KARENA.WAD (Karena.zip). Firebrand, my Karena.wad contains some new textures: flats: KAF_011, KAF_012 patches: KAW_011, KAW_012, KAW_013 and in the "Texture1.lmp" are defined: AGRAVE01, AWOD1, AWOD2
Wed, 12 May 2004 17:02:06

Nice work!! Just an small comment for the latest WAD file I have upoaded, there are the same names of the patches that you made for the posters I made, please rename them to the next numbers in the list, so there won't be problems when making textures with posters, and for the next maps you upload, please include the new textures with your map WAD files, so there is no need to download the whole karena.wad file, thanks!

Sun, 30 May 2004 20:45:06

It's quite good but the brown color is too expressive. Couldn't it be more lighter to look like the original And I will be also interested in how did you convert it to hexen palette. Thanx for now!
Wed, 09 Jun 2004 16:49:58

Firebrand

I used Paint Shop Pro to make the image to have the Hexen pallete, at first the image had it's own pallete (that's 256 different brownish colors), so I first made the assumption that loading the Hexen pallete at first would be the solution, but the result was a lot of greyish colors (because the program doesn't find any colors that are near the color used originally), so I loaded the Doom palette to it first and then loaded the Hexen palette (of course I could also use colorize to give another effect), I will see what to do to make the colors more like the original, you must also take a look at the game's palette, it doesn't have much browns on it, so it will be really difficult to make it look as the original (but not impossible, heh!).

DarkRaven

Hello everybody! After some time I have made another map DM[/color:1wjmcaer]-Malevolence[/color:1wjmcaer] and in my eyes it's the best of all of mine ) We'll see ... ) http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... olence.zip BTW. Is necessary to use my newest Katextur!! http://downloads.orcishweb.com/koraxdev ... textur.zip And I have a question. Will be used skyboxes in Korax Arena?

Yep, indeed they can be added right now. Firebrand should be able to handle this part of the project quite fine, I think, so just swamp him with the skybox textures and/or requests you've got.

Firebrand

Yes, I can do it, just give me any suggestions you got, I might be able to get them going . BTW, I might upload a new version of katextur.wad myself later, I'm just going to add the stuff you got here. Also, for skyboxes to work right we should start thinking the place the maps will have in the MAPINFO lump (I have done a small MAPINFO lump with all the maps we have until now, I will upload it on Monday), that's because the MAPINFO needs to list the skyboxes for every map in the game. Also, I have made a wad file containing all the maps if it's needed for something (for now I think it will be best I keep it myself unless you want me to upload it).

Well I thought for one single skybox for all KA maps right now (half of them are completely indoors anyway), one that clearly sets it apart from any of the original Heretic and Hexen skyboxes (the one you already made for SE would be just fine as far as I go, but if you want to enhance it or make a new one, you're welcome to do that of course).

Arrgh Firebrand, another small mistake with your Katextur. This time in height of the texture ABRICK6B. 480 is correctly, not 384

Hell, I'm sorry again, I might fix it soon, it's some problem I got for using Wintex which doesn't allow textures bigger than 128 pixels , I promise I will see another way to make the textures with XWE.

Not worry about it Yeah, You right. For this is XWE much better

I have fixed my small mistake and uploaded a new version of the WAD file.
...and our mappers have gone missing... Right now only Striker, Firebrand (yes, he does it all) and RambOrc are working on available maps for KA release. NO, I am BACK! Is there any mapping work for me (I suppose that yep)

Good to hear. We started polishing up your maps for the KA public release, but if you'd like to do it instead that'd be great. Else feel free to make new maps.

Ok RambOrc, I've nearly finished two new KA maps only little else texturing and lighting work have left (but this is most complicated) And is there any new version of Korax Arena? Especially Katextur.WAD and I almost forgot Karena.WCF

Crimson Wizard

Can I say a word to mappers here? I took a look at the maps of KA and although there were good ones (I recognised some of the UT ones) I suppose that KA needs something project-specific, you know, unique, styled, not just remakes of UT and Heretic maps.
Mon, 08 May 2006 12:13:21

RambOrc

Not necessarily, the rest of the game is also pretty much a mixture of a bunch of other games (Heretic, Hexen, DOOM, Witchaven, UT, Q3A). It's all about the gameplay and to make it as much fun as possible. For sticking to a fantasy world and make it consistent, we've got the RPG project.

Especially Katextur.WAD and I almost forgot Karena.WCF It's on KDev already, look on the arena folder, and sort the files list with the date, you should find both the latest KA binaries and the latest KA.wcf, check out how things are done now, since the KAtextures.wad is not used anymore , if you have anymore questions just ask here and I'll try to help you out. BTW, good to see you back! EDIT: I haven't seen all the replies on this thread, so I quoted DarkRaven's post to specify what I'm replying to. Also, I think that there isn't any problem with the maps, since KA it's just about having fun killing other players/bots, also most of the UT maps and heretic maps are maps known by most people who have played the games, so that makes the battle even more intense, since DarkRaven got a hard time placing the items accordingly to the maps (not exactly as the originals, but it's very approximate to what I remember). I think like Ramborc, it's gameplay what makes the fun, mixed with the maps too.

It's nice to see You again team! And pleased to meet you Crimson Wizard. I accept your comment, I'm planning to the future my very own levels but for now I'm finishing two UT conversion maps (maybe three) Unfortunately I don't have much time, I'm under great pressure of work and I spend a lot of time travelling to and from work but I'll do my best with reserve time for Korax Arena! Cheers

Explain me, what is KA textures/patches naming convention? What do "A" and "KAF" prefixes mean? Also, are there any textures from Quake? Simply curious; when I was making my mod I found very nice textures there. (Heh, trying to make one simple map for KA, being tired of typing & fixing that stupid code, arrrrhhhh )
Sat, 05 Aug 2006 19:34:04

RambOrc

No, no Quake textures - idgames is well-known for going with lawyers after modders who use their stuff. Even the DOOM marine is a calculated risk and has been put in with the backup plan of using the Strife player character if idgames threatens us.

Wow. Too bad. Never thought they are guarding their old works so strictly. I would never do the same if I were on their place.
