Converting my catalogue

Wed, 15 Sep 2004 20:19:18

The 4th Class

Just so everybody knows, I'm taking all the MIDIs that are currently in my KDev folder and converting them to MP3s. If anybody wants a specific MIDI converted over every other one, you can make a "request" here and I'll give that one priority. Otherwise, I'll most likely convert them alphabetically. The reason I'm starting this now is because converting from MIDI to MP3 is very easy, but still time consuming, and when the time comes when they all need to become MP3s, they'd already be converted and I wouldn't have to be in any rush.

Swamp Town! That's my favurite tune, please focuse on that one first. BTW, does converting to MP3 means any "sound quality" changes in the musics, or they will sound the same?

I like the DragonSlayer one! I don't know the melody stays in my mind, also the SwampTown song is really good! If you allow me to suggest you Timidity++ for making the conversions it sounds very well with any midi and of course the ones I have heard with it sound pretty good, of course, this is only a suggestion.

The MP3 file will sound [u:2ebyqgs1]exactly[/u:2ebyqgs1] the same as how I would listen to the song as a MIDI on my computer. So if you have a different MIDI card than I do, yes it will sound different, but you can tell me which one you like better.

Watch out, if it's the second that means your sound card is shitty.

Well I just uploaded the Swamp Town MP3 right now, so feel free to check it out and post your comments.

Welll, forgive me, I'm not trying to be ironic, but what is the point in converting the musics then, if it won't sound different at all? Musics in mp3 will mean a huge investement when downloading the mod, because they are immensily bigger then midis.

They may sound identical to me, but there are hundrends of other sound cards out there. I remember playing one of the MIDIs on my old Windows 95, and the whole brass section sounded like diarrhea, but after I played the MP3 conversion, it felt like a breath of fresh air. Of course, almost nobody uses Win95 anymore, so you've got a point. What I could try to do is get out my keyboard, connect it to the computer, and record the MP3s from there. At least that way it may sound a bit more realistic. I mean, the string sounds on my keyboard have much more reverb than on my MIDI synth. The trouble is, I've never done it before, so I don't know whether or not it'll work. It's worth a try, though.

I would like to help you reduce the effort of the conversions, so I will upload Timidity++ for you to the FTP, it's free and really easy to use, also I can upload a small demo of the Korax Arena title song with it, so you all can evaluate the sound of it (I got some time to do the conversion). That way you just have to download the program with the soundfonts and you are done . You don't need to have any specific sound card for this program it loads the soundfonts to memory so you don't need any "soundfont compatible card".

I have uploaded Timidity++ and the config file for it, I'll make a small tutorial to cofigure it and upload it during the week.

Thanks, Firebrand. I'll check it out ASAP.

BTW, I have uploaded the DLL's that are needed to convert the files to MP3 and OGG, you just need to unzip them into the same folder as the EXE file.

Since sunday, I have uploaded some soundfonts to use with Timidity, they are huge but, believe me their quality is pretty good I'd recommend you all to use it with the FluidR3 soundfont, which has a very good quality, there's also a text file describing how to install the soundfonts to make Timidity work, if someone needs help installing them just post here and I'll try to help you out. Hope you like them!

The 4th Class

The good news is I finally started remixing some of the MIDIs and converting them into MP3s. The bad news is they're on my ME com, which is acting up again as usual and won't connect to the KDev ftp. So once I get all the troubleshooting out of the way, you may yet just hear the remixes.

The 4th Class

PS: When I say "remix," I mean recorded using an alternative MIDI card. Each MIDI file is "remixed" twice: each with a different card, one from an older com I have, the other from my Yamaha PSR282 keyboard.
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 21:12:18

Firebrand

Sounds good, BTW did you tried downloading Filezilla for connecting to the KoraxDev ftp??
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 21:22:55

The 4th Class

The command prompt on my new com connects to Kdev quite well, so I don't really need Filezilla at the moment - I'll just transfer them via USB drive when I'm ready.

Just a teaser for Firebrand: I think you are really going to enjoy my FirebrandThemeRemix.

The 4th Class

Three MP3s have just been uploaded into KDev. Their names are SwampTownRemix, SwampTownRemix2, and FirebrandThemeRemix. The first SW remix was done on an older MIDI card, and the other two MP3s were done using my Yamaha PSR282 keyboard. More remixes are on the way, but I thought I'd upload these first to satisfy both Mago and Firebrand's needs. EDIT: I also uploaded the remixes to And Then The Drugs Kicked In and Haunt.

Ahhh, GREAT!!! Gonna check those out right now, see if there's indeed a "better" version! I know this song by heart.

Those mp3-s seem broken, they plays only 5 secs and stops. That's on WinAmp. M$ Player plays 15 secs, but with awfull sounds. Maybe I need some codecs installed?
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 11:18:50

RambOrc

MP3s not working from here either. Maybe you've uploaded them in ASCII?
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 13:18:53

The 4th Class

That's strange...maybe I forgot to use binary transfer mode?
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 14:03:34

mago

True, I also got the codec problem, it must be the "bin" mode problem, yes...
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 14:44:37

The 4th Class

I wanna verify this before I upload them again - it takes forever and just to find out that that wasn't why they're corrupted, it would be a waste of time.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 15:13:25

Firebrand

They doesn't work for me either, maybe the problem is how you uploaded them, why don't you try using Filezilla?? It configures automatically .
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 15:38:07

mago

I upload by the DOS method and it also works nice (in terms of speed).
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 16:19:21

The 4th Class

I uploaded using DOS protocol.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 16:26:21

The 4th Class

Ok, I reuploaded Firebrand Theme Remix using 8-bit binary, see if that works.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 16:34:22

RambOrc

Yep, it now works.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 16:51:35

The 4th Class

Sweet assness, now I'm reuploading the Swamp Town remixes, they should be finished in about 10-15 minutes. Edit: Finished.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 17:32:38

Firebrand

Nice work! I really like the remix of the FBTheme, heh! BTW, I prefer the sound of SwampTownRemix2, but it would need a bit more volume IMO, what's the difference between the two versions?
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 19:04:55

The 4th Class

Different sound cards: one is from a Compaq Presiario 5000, the other is from my digital keyboard. As for the volume, I admit I didn't master these files well, if at all: it's because the first sound bank requires a medium-ranged recording volume, while the keyboard overloaded even at minimum, so I had to compromise a lot to get rid of the distortion.
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 19:10:03

Firebrand

Sounds good, I'm sure that with a bit of practice and converting, you'll come to a "default" setting for recording your files, so far I think you are doing a good work .
