* Woman 1: "What is that little trash can on the screen?" * Woman 2: "My son says that is call the 'recycle bin'. He tells me when I don't want a Word document anymore and I delete it, it really goes in there." * Woman 1: "Why in the recycle thingy? Can't you just erase it?" * Woman 2: "Oh no, Word wouldn't work for very long if I did that, I would run out of blank pages." * Woman 1: "Why?" * Woman 2: "Because it cleans the words off the pages, then sends the blank sheets back to Word so they can be used again. That's why it's called the recycle bin."

Customer: "That's what I was supposed to do, right?" Tech Support: "No, you were supposed to click 'OK'." Customer: "I thought you said to click 'Cancel'." Tech Support: "NO. I said to click 'OK'." Customer: "Oh." Tech Support: "Now we have to start over." Customer: "Why?" Tech Support: "Because you clicked 'Cancel'." Customer: "Wasn't I supposed to click 'Cancel'?" Tech Support: "No. Forget that. Let's start from the top." Customer: "Ok." I spent the next fifteen minutes re-constructing the carefully crafted setup for this lady's unique computer. Wow, I just got into a conversation with someone who says he can get a virus from inside a .txt file to execute when you open it with notepad. Here's some of it: [quote="Populous online lobby":35sialyu][CnB]Keith181> I am,I know hackers, I used to be one, they take advantage of every easy way to plant thier shit on a hard drive, p2p is by far the easiest way there is TheCount_TP> that'd be crackers not hackers [CnB]Keith181> hackers are those who compile "viruses" which compromise things of interest on a victom's hard drive, just because they dont "hack" the connection and upload it manually doesnt mean their not hackers TheCount_TP> no, you got the whole concept wrong TheCount_TP> hackers aren't the ppl who lay shit on pcs [CnB]Keith181> lol.... dude as I said, I used to be a hacker, I know exactly what they do TheCount_TP> hackers are ppl who do research or programming for a purpose [CnB]Keith181> and normally the purpose is to compromise certain information of interest, whether that information be tangable, or just to fuck someone's computer up TheCount_TP> no, that would be crackers again [CnB]Keith181> such as a trojan, that program is used to retrieve numerical information from files and folders TheCount_TP> i know a couple of things about that stuff [CnB]Keith181> a cracker is someone who changes the registry entries of a program, lol dude u even have a clue what ur talking about? TheCount_TP> i do.... [CnB]Keith181> ur trying to tell a former hacker what a hacker is? TheCount_TP> why would hacking the registry make a difference in whether youre a cracker or not TheCount_TP> i mean, its just 2 damn files [CnB]Keith181> for example, fo u know the CD crack for populous? what that does is edits the registry entries that look for authenticity encryptions on the disk, so that the computer believes the CD is in the drive TheCount_TP> funny TheCount_TP> lets not discuss about terminology TheCount_TP> it's hardly about what you call it [CnB]Keith181> I understand what the terminolgy is dude, u obviously dont, theres a difference between cracks, and viruses TheCount_TP> just for kicks, what do you say is a rom hacker? [CnB]Keith181> a rom hacker? I'm actually not sure what that is, but from the sound, I would assume a hacker that attacks externally? TheCount_TP> funny TheCount_TP> it is well known that rom hackers are the guys... who hack roms! TheCount_TP> which are... TheCount_TP> binary images of a console game to be ran on an emulator [CnB]Keith181> such as burning a virus to a disk and somehow tricking some illiterate retard into installing the contents? TheCount_TP> no, such as making a code that gives you 10+ lives in aladdin for genesis TheCount_TP> http://www.gshi.org/ TheCount_TP> that site is fulll of rom hackers [CnB]Keith181> ok... well dude I dont fuck with that kinda shit, therefore I wouldnt have a clue what it is TheCount_TP> then lets call it an even, considering that this vocabulary topic is leading us nowhere [CnB]Keith181> the fact is a crack is something that modifies a program by editing entries in the registry, instead of spending an hour manually editing it with regedit, a hacker is a programmer whom compiles programs that compromise certain infortmation ona hard drive [OK, I let this slip as it might be a matter of opinion, but here it starts getting good] TheCount_TP> so what you say is that when you select a file and teh connection is opened, the guy hacks the thing and sends his own data instead of the pretty song? [CnB]Keith181> no.... a hacker attaches his program(virus) to the song/file which is being downloaded, normally those infected files can be determined by the size, but there are some hackers who are able to compress enough to make it almost unnoticable [cnb]chainchomp> CRACKS CAN ALSO MODIFY THE PROGRAM FOOL [CnB]Keith181> thats what I said chain... [cnb]chainchomp> edit them in c++ debugger [cnb]chainchomp> i didnt read it all [cnb]chainchomp> most no cd cracks are executables edited with VC++ TheCount_TP> how do they get you to run the thing? [cnb]chainchomp> the machine output debugger [cnb]chainchomp> hey keith i butcher tag [cnb]chainchomp> ! [CnB]Keith181> everything that can be used has an exe, thus is u listen to the song, it "exe"cutes the virus TheCount_TP> yes, but say you put the song in a program which is meant to play songs only TheCount_TP> it's not gonna run the exe TheCount_TP> just take it as invalid data and move on [CnB]Keith181> lol, do u know nothing about programming dude? u can send pointers to simutaneously execute different parts of a program, when u combine(attach) something to a program, it becomes one with it [CnB]Keith181> jesus read a tutorial or something TheCount_TP> but dude TheCount_TP> you can't affect how the program works wihout getting to edit it TheCount_TP> you can't edit it if your exe code isn't ran [CnB]Keith181> ur making no sense... TheCount_TP> and nothing is gonna run it cause the program is not meant to run it! TheCount_TP> an mp3 file doesn't contain pointers to execute code! [CnB]Keith181> if u compile a program the exe is in the directory of the program... TheCount_TP> you said the exe came attached in the mp3 [CnB]Keith181> whatever dude.... argueing with u about something like this is like argueing with a blind man about how hot a porn video is, if u know jack about programming, I cant prove a point to u TheCount_TP> actually, acording to your argument, you could place a virus in a text file [cnb]chainchomp> dude [cnb]chainchomp> you can TheCount_TP> and heve it execute while reading it with notepad [cnb]chainchomp> yea and TheCount_TP> that can't be done [cnb]chainchomp> yes it can [cnb]chainchomp> LOL [cnb]chainchomp> you just have to know something about machine code TheCount_TP> but notepad doesn't process the fucking machine code [cnb]chainchomp> you can format a file however you want and have it be whatever you want it to be TheCount_TP> it just prints out the ascii chars [CnB]Keith181> he's trying to tell a former hacker that I cant do what I used to do all the time [CnB]Keith181> lol, its almost funny [cnb]chainchomp> you cant type the machine code into the fucking text file [cnb]chainchomp> lol [cnb]chainchomp> ADD bitch [cnb]chainchomp> lol [cnb]chainchomp> i can debug anything into assembler TheCount_TP> so? [cnb]chainchomp> it goes both ways [cnb]chainchomp> you can format something with whatever extension you want [CnB]Keith181> I went to web design, programmer gets me into too much trouble [CnB]Keith181> programming* TheCount_TP> yea SO? [cnb]chainchomp> if you know assembler you can make an executable into a .txt file TheCount_TP> yes [cnb]chainchomp> i've seen it [cnb]chainchomp> and it can hold a virus [cnb]chainchomp> and it will execute [cnb]chainchomp> if you double click it TheCount_TP> but you cant get the notepad to execute the virus [cnb]chainchomp> you dont have to [cnb]chainchomp> you'r edumb TheCount_TP> i am? TheCount_TP> lemme quote you a few mins ago [CnB]Keith181> the size of the file will be enormous compared to any other .txt file unnless its a .txt with programming code for a binary, but some idiots would open it anyway TheCount_TP> TheCount_TP> actually, acording to your argument, you could place a virus in a text file TheCount_TP> [cnb]chainchomp> you can TheCount_TP> TheCount_TP> and heve it execute while reading it with notepad TheCount_TP> [cnb]chainchomp> yea and TheCount_TP> yes, you can get a virus and put it in a txt file TheCount_TP> but make notepad run it? TheCount_TP> that's insane [CnB]Keith181> count.... when you "double click" the txt file, u "execute" the Notepad program, which with the virus attached to the file ur opening also executes the virus, what about that dont u comprehend? [WTF? He's insane!] TheCount_TP> the notepad file, being intact TheCount_TP> does its usual job TheCount_TP> of printing ascii chars into a window TheCount_TP> even if the ascii chars are the virus' code [CnB]Keith181> ok count, whatever u say, as I said previously, argueing with u about this is pointless, cause u know jack about programming TheCount_TP> funny TheCount_TP> so you're telling me that notepad, intact as it icomes with windows, executes whatevers in a txt file? [CnB]Keith181> no comment TheCount_TP> i thought so [Minutes later...] TheCount_TP> alan TheCount_TP> sup? [GoD]AlaN_90> nm u? TheCount_TP> nm TheCount_TP> i just got into a really pointless convo with someone who says he can make a virus in a txt execute by opeining it in notepad [GoD]AlaN_90> good for you TheCount_TP> and i turned 14 today [CnB]Keith181> 14... lol that explains the ignorance [GoD]AlaN_90> count TheCount_TP> dude [GoD]AlaN_90> look at that name [GoD]AlaN_90> lol TheCount_TP> youre the one saying you can make a virus run with opening a txt file in notepad TheCount_TP> revise that and you'll see, it DOESN'T make sense [CnB]Keith181> I can... I've done it TheCount_TP> after writing irc messages with only your mind? toreto in [CnB]Keith181> as I said, I do not wish to argue this further So he didn't

haha! That really reminds me to the support team of the telephony company who is giving the internet service for my work, I had to talk with one of them, and decided to tell him to f**** off himself, he was such an asshole. I could solve the problem by myself and lost about 40 minutes of my time with his stupid things . There were some other things there that even made me laugh (because I've heard them before or because of the stupidity of the words) .

I know from my own experience that human's approach to machines often looks like shamanism... or IS the shamanism. I mean that people often do not try to analyse what is happening with the computer, instead they try to remember "right sequence of actions" to make that strange thing work. I remember for one period of time my younger sister used to turn off computer and monitor simultaneously. She held her fingers on two "power on/off" buttons, waited until Windows shut down and pressed those buttons at once... when I asked her what does she do, she answered with confidence that they must be turned out this way.. perhaps she thought something bad will happen if one will do elsewise. When we changed to win98 which turns the power off automatically, she still used to wait until power goes off to turn monitor off.

I've seen this kind of things myself, on the office where I work, people seem to try to "learn" the sequence of actions used to send a mail, for example, if you happen to move the icon from place on the screen, they'll be like "oh shit! the world is going to end! ".

Those things get scary when they come from people who think they know what they're talking about. Like my informatics teacher from last year, who didn't know what ping was. After her assistant explained what ping was (the ping subject came up thanks to me of course), she said "wasn't that what linux was for?". Frightening

ROFL. Found this posted on one russian forum. One guy shows this PHP code, saying he got it from previous worker -
if ($flag == false) {
	# just in case
	if (false == true)
 exit;
	include "execute.php";
}
What happens to people brains sometimes... ugh...

if false==true? Hmmmm Well, in Python if you change the syntax a little, that could be a working code. Boolean values always have first letter caps so false and true could be variable names.
