Cheapy plays Korax Mod!

Not try. I played. Shame I haven't played too much of it. Just had 30 minutes of it and went on to try out the Arena. Anyhoo, I like it so far, and this is what I think about it: - I know Doomsday support is sort of discontinued, but sounds' volume distances aren't exactly working properly, I mean I can hear the crushers (at secret stained glass door) at full volume way back over at the entrance in Winnowing Hall. Hrm. - I've randomly witnessed some mage hand sprite or something to the right of the screen when I kill an afrit. It's big and bright too, can't miss it. It only happens for a split second, i've been unable to take a screen of it. (Comp: k7 1ghz (uc'd to 950), gf2gts 64mb, 512mb ram, sblive 5.1, Windows More Evil, running in OpenGL) - Love the pain skins, adds extra atmosphere and makes killing groups of centaurs a bit more organized from being a mage. Could have some better damage feedback when attacking. Perhaps bloody sounds would be nice nice, maybe some extra bloody sprites spewing out and sticking around! - I only played the mage. I'ven't tried the other classes yet. I'll be the mage though - The RPG-like gameplay is fantastic. It's rather satisfying to earn a new weapon when you level up . Going from a puny yellow wand to a rather tasty gray bigshot wand has made me much happier and encourages me to continue to see what other kick-ass weapons i'll get on the way. Good work guys! I'll play some more tonight. Cheers!

I'm trully happy you liked the Mod. The good thing about being a mage is the power. Once you have gained needed levels, you will be almost untouchable because you have so much firepower (the main weapins won't cost you any mana, plus you have the special wands). But the fact you won't probably have more than 30 or 40 hit points even when in a high level, compensates it for the gameplay value: you are almost a god in terms of magic power, but a good bite from a chaos serpent or a Ettin that gets up close and deliver a couple of blows with his mace will kill you. That makes the mage quite funny to play. That's a problem when playing with the fighter - after a stage, most enemies will dye imediatly after one blow from any weapon; I usually founf myself wandering around a map after the level puzzles, killing the monsters at will, without paying much attention to them, wich can get boring at times. He has imense health, so I was never afraid of being catch off guard. Still, the way the Dark Bishop and the Heresiarch were modified, made them extremely hard to kill by the fighter (specially the first when in packs), and I can say that the guy finally finds his match when playing with the big guys. All I can say about the Doomsday engine in Kmod is that we caught it in a given version\timeline and used it, with its qualities and bugs, to develop the mod. I also get that sound error, but it's most likely an engine problem and nothing we can do about it (well, Moose can do about it. ). PS: Thanks for liking the Hurt skins, they were hard to make, but in the end I think it was worth the effort. I also wanted more gory effects, in the general game but specially on the "change" between healthy and hurt "skins", but the main task was not to change Hexen initial feel that much, since it's indeed a Gameplay mod. Let's hope we can get the time and energy to add such effects to our new mod!

The visual bug might be a wrong frame in one of the animations, Moose should double-check it. Technically seen, KMOD 1.0-2.8 uses the very same 3D engine, which is the July 2000 release of jHexen with the MD2 model support copy+pasted from an August or September 2000 jDoom release (back then, there wasn't even a Doomsday engine yet). This means KMOD 1.x and 2.x is in 3D technology nearly 4 years behind current Doomsday development. KMOD 3.x won't make you much happier neither, it uses the very same engine with a couple of self-made modifications like higher base resolution (I can't even name any other technology enhancements right now, ask Janis what else is there). This means a crappy sound engine for KMOD from the beginning to the end (including future releases). The only way KMOD might get technological enhancements if we would convert it to Vavoom, which we decided not to do because it wouldn't be worth the effort, the time and energy is better invested into Scattered Evil and Arena. But all the same, gameplay wise KMOD is still something I'm proud of, so I'm happy you like it.

I hear that sound problem as well. It's been like that since Korax Mod 1. The odd thing is that when I tried to include mdls in Fury, the sound problem was somehow also included (that and I kept getting Z_Malloc errors), so I removed it, and the problem disappeared. Then there was the fact that only about half of the items had models, which made them look rather strange if they were next to sprite items.

RambOrc

You mean CG3 (built on the same jHexen 0.99.6) doesn't have the same sound probs?

Well, the only graphical change I want or need is smooth camera movement, or something else that breaks the 35fps cap, but I already understood that won't happen anytime soon. I'm too used to fast framerates now
Tue, 04 May 2004 17:26:23

Ichor

No, it never did. In fact, I don't even fully remember anymore that there was a sound problem when I added the mdl code. I do remember the Z_Malloc errors though. Oddly enough, they weren't caused by the models, and it's been fixed. Still, I never bothered restoring the mdl code.

I've had a quick look for that Afrit bug and it doesn't happen for me, what weapon are you using when this happens or does it not matter?
Tue, 04 May 2004 20:25:47

Well Vavoom doesn't have the 35 fps cap so go and play some more KA.

There's a similar joke over at Doomworld about Millennium for Doom. It's a tossup between that and Scattered Evil.

I know, it's odd I did have a big computer reset during play (Vavoom, just now), it's because I forgot to underclock to 950MHz after a cmos checksum error. My fault on that. Oops! (And yes, it still was slow even with cmos at default settings) Maybe Vavoom is direct3d optimized? I can't launch it in Direct3D because it couldn't find a resolution (odd), but I don't know if there's a windowed mode either. I never came across "Fullscreen" or anything in the options, but having a windowed mode, since I IRC and MSN and stuff, would be rather essential. [quote="RambOrc":17t5215c][quote="CheapAlert":17t5215c]/me places bet for KA and SE releasing before HL2 That's because you aren't part of the Korax developer team and you don't know what we team members do... Then what's that pile of empty Bawls doing out in the alley around you guys then I think i'm onto something

LOL... well KA will definitely make it before HL2, DNF, CG3 & co, but with SE it's a big question, I might disappoint you if I tell you a big secret, but I'm still working on the very first map for SE (from dozens of maps planned), and I estimate it to take another couple of months to finish (now you see why we are looking for mappers). And that's just mapping, in some areas we're behind even that.

[quote="Ichor":222e5hdc]Heh, that sounds about right. The difference is we aren't seeing much progress with Millennium. Certainly true, there's been no activity in the forum for ages (last I heard they were improving maps 01-06). Mind you there's now a similar joke on the ZDoom forums about version 2.0.64... (although I think that case is similar to Fury - ie. progress being made, but unseen to those on the outside) /me sits back and waits for similar comments on my own project...
