CD question most probably solved

Cafepress, the company where the T-shirts and other merchandise for Korax' Heritage are manufactured, now offers data CDs too - meaning the question of how we'll put SE on CD and how we get it to the people is solved. I'll ask Raven Software whether they find it OK, but I don't think there'll be any probs. I still don't know how big SE will be in the end, but it might be over 100 megs which not everyone will want to download, and for $8.99 plus shipping ($7 international, starting at $5 for US domestic) it's not impossibly expensive I think. There is also the possibility to make a paperslip version for only $4.99 plus shipping, it just doesn't have a jewel case and you miss out on the possible artwork we could put on the insert and the tray card. I ask you all to check out the link below and make your opinions which version we should make (as long as I use the free shop, there can be only one product per type - upgrading to a shop with unlimited articles would cost $60/year or $8/month). http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/data.aspx

I think it's cool that we could sell the CD's to the people that are interested on it, as it would look a bit PRO by our part heh! I would like to ask you something, what will the CD contain?? A kind of setup program that will install the MOD or the whole MOD ready to be used?? Also, is there a chance I could get it for free?? I know that it wouldn't be fair but I really want to ask...

I like the idea of selling SE with cafepress it'll make our live alot easyer. In answer to FireBrands question we could put everything into an installer I don't know about Janis or anyone else but I have whats needed to make one.

CD will contain SE with a professional installer (Camper has the resources and apps to make one, he's done such things several times earlier, unless you want to make it Moose), plus all versions of KMOD, the 4 trailers, some other media etc. - it costs the same regardless whether it has 5 or 500 megs on it. Especially for people who don't have flat-rate broadband access, it would even be cheaper than downloading the stuff. Every team member will also get an SE CD for free, I think that's only fair. p.s. Neither of you answered the question about the version, deluxe version with jewel case and colored inlay or paperslip version for half the price?

Oh sorry forgot about that, well I personally would prefer the Jewel case mainly because I alwas seem to loose CDs if they are in paper or plastic slips. I'll send a sample of my installer work later this week then you can deside whos looks better. Some other things to add might be a KH windows theme, maybe some of the artwork.

I'm not sure how far different Winblows versions' theme managament is from one version to another, I'd be really surprised if it'd come out that the 5 major revisions of Winblows that have theme management would all be compatible with each other... BTW I've made 2 wallpapers for KMOD II ages ago, and never released them. If we'd want to use them, I'll have to delete the "II" from the title part and the "2" from the URL part.

How about making it votation by the people interested in the MOD? I think it would be important for them to give their opinions (that's my personal thinking) I would like the deluxe version, but, what if they can't buy it? It would also create some kind of chaos among the users too! (maybe I'm being exagerated about that, heh!) .

And about the windows theme, we could investigate a bit about the things you mention Ramborc (if we got enough time, heh!) or maybe we could just include some desktop images into the CD and everyone could be happy!

Well, I'm afraid I'm the only one who doesn't agree with the cd idea... Don't get me wrong I REALLY like the idea of having our own cd, but I just don't think it should be done for SE. Reasons: Well, SE won't actually be a TC, it will be more like a mod, or add-on. There are few original artwork/codework/mapping (okay we have all those maps, but RambOrc already stated they aren't that great, and weren't made with a storyline to connect them), and all the material we have will be mixed up into a form of MOD, meaning it just won't be what a great thought game would be. I'm not putting our work down. I'm just saying how things are. SE isn't a real game, it isn't original. If we put it in a cd form, and when somebody buy it, he may be a little disapointed, because he would be waiting for some great, extremely worth results, objectives we can't make up unless we spend much more time making it almost again, specially in the storyline, maps area. Even with all the media, I don't think it would attract many, beacuse most of it is already online, and the rest is too little comparing to the cost, which is a little high is some countries ( if you take Brazil's example, you will see that the cd would actually cost 4 times more than the price in dollars, which is more than enough to buy a brand new game there, maybe two not-so-hot ones. Adding up a frail economy...). I really yhink this great choice should be left for Serpent Power, where we will be able to really "make" something, to build a real game, of owr own. Maybe we could then add EVERYTHING we made before, plus tutorials, manuals in pdf, original art, sketches, texts, projects insight... Every piece of meadia we can get to make the cd as interesting as possible. Hope you agree with me, and sorry if I make somebody sad. Gotta go...

I guess there is a little misunderstanding here... the CD idea is not so that we can have a CD and sell it (first of all, only the company doing it gets any money out of it, we none), the whole idea came because of the comparatively big download. While for people with flat-rate broadband access 100 megs are nothing, it's quite a lot for someone with a 56K modem (5-6 hours non-stop with top speed, more like 7-8 hours even in an optimal case). I don't know about other countries, but here in Switzerland phone costs are comparatively high. Since last Summer we've got the above mentioned flat-rate broadband ourselves, but before that it was a single 64K ISDN line where downloading 100 megs took 5-6 hours. Paying $1 or so per hour makes it 5 bucks, and add a CD-R for 2 bucks more because I'm not going to keep 100 megs on my HDD if I don't need it (like the 20-30 MB for the 4 trailers), also I don't want to download all this stuff again if my HDD crashes or I get a virus or whatever. Not to mention by the time I would want to download it again because I lost it, the site might not be there any more and I'd never be able to play the game (this was mostly hypothetical and some of this wouldn't apply to Korax' Heritage - but people would have no way to know it). Still not convincing enough? Do the math if the total download amount is 200 megs. At that point, the CD is not only more comfortable but also cheaper. Not to mention when new projects come out, I guess I can just mail a new master CD to the company and after that a newer version of the CD will be available. Anyway, though you didn't say it in words, I guess it means you prefer the paperslip version. Giving up on the jewel case with the colored inlay saves $4 on a CD, making it $11.99 incl. shipping for international and $9.99 incl. shipping for US domestic.

No,no,no,no,no... I perfectly understood about the cd being "freeware" (the money is just for the company which makes the material=industrial price). I also know that the 200 mega download wouldn't be nice. What I meant to say is that it would be better to have different sized diwnload files. I don't know why is the mod so big (musics maybe..?), but since original Hexen has all the stuff we need (lots of maps, music and graphics), and it only have about 20 mega, I think we could cut the whole mod into several types (one would consist of only basic features, like a starter, the code files, the new graphics and the maps; other would include 3d models, wav music, whatever, and other would have the whole package, to those who can). Also, could you explain why is SE so big? It has a normal number of maps, a regular number of new/implementes graphics/models.

I don't know yet how big SE's gonna be, absolute minimum would be 10-20 megs (with MIDI music only, no voices and no 3D models). Packing the different parts of the game into different download files shouldn't be much of a prob - but your suggestion would still force people to download continously for a day or longer and maybe pay a lot more than $12, if they want to get all parts of the game. Another thing... I don't know about you, but it'd rather piss me off if I'd put time and energy into making the game better (like recording music or voice acting), just so that people would decide not to download it because it's too big.
