Aaagh!!! crash after first hub
Wed, 19 Dec 2001 14:40:00
Always crashes leaving first hub, with the message
W_GetNumForName: clus1msg not found!
Any ideas, folks? Win2000/TNT2
Often crashes on savegame reload, but I suspect my sound card. Maybe :-)
What a game, tho!!!!!!!

Here is the solution to the 1st prob:
- restore your savegame at the point where you'd exit the 7 portals (1st hub) and go over to Shado Wood (2nd hub)
- pull down the console (with the ~ key) and type in "warp 7" (w/o the quotes), then hit ENTER
- you're now in Shadow Wood and your game goes on, the only thing you've been missing is the story screen between the 2 hubs.
The jHexen engine we used as base engine has some savegame corruption probs, best I can recommend is that you save to different slots alternately.

Hey, thanks for your help, I will go and sort out those bad ol' monsters some more now.

Oh crikey, warp failed, I am destined to hit something

What was the error message you got? Also, try "WARP 13", that one might also work under certain circumstances.
Thu, 20 Dec 2001 21:21:00
All cheats not working? Do you play by chance on the highest skill?

I had the same problem with being unable to leave the first hub in Korax mod 1. Odd, eh?
Since this part of the engine hasn't been changed between the 1st and 2nd mod, it's not surprising. I'm not 100% sure but I think this bug hunts the underlying jHexen engine itself, and appears only on certain machines as I was never able to reproduce it. It might have something to do with the 1.1 hexen.wad used, I have the original release with the 1.0 wad and use the 1.1 patch from my Deathkings CD, maybe this way the 1.1 wad is not 100% the same as when you buy Hexen nowadays with the 1.1 wad on the CD. Dunno.

Hey, thanks for this help.
The error message is - Error: 'warp' failed
I tried all the "cheats listed on the web page, all got the same error. I guess the cheats are disabled, but I couldn't work out how to re-enable.
The good thing is, I get to practise as a mage, at least untill I finish the first hub.
I had the same problem with being unable to leave the first hub in Korax mod 1.
Odd, eh?

I do play on the highest skill, after a bit of practice, all 3 types in the old days, and again partially with your mod, it's much more fun!
I also have the original 1.0 wad, patched from the 'net. I have never played the Deathkings addon, although after playing this, IF it turns up in a shop, I'll certainly buy it.
I will try desperate measures, and repatch the wad from fresh, you never know!
Fri, 21 Dec 2001 15:15:00
Oh no, why do you always leave the obvious until last. kick to head (boot)
Hey, thanks
Fri, 21 Dec 2001 15:42:00
Yessiree, works a treat.
BTW, does the Deathking addon work in Korax? and how?
Well, back to it

I've been playing Hexen on skill 5 for the last 3 years myself and dying only when accidentally falling into an abyss or so, but I'm positive Korax Mod can't be won on skill 5, at least not with the Fighter. It might be though that it's possible in Korax Mod II as all 3 player classes became more powerful.
Anyway, on skill 5 the cheats are disabled, it's coded this way in Hexen and we left it so.
As for Deathkings, you can buy it online from CDACCESS, either as a standalone box for $9.95 at http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/hexendkpr.htm
or as a package together with Hexen and Heretic at http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/hexenbunpo.htm
Playing Korax Mod or KMOD2 in Deathkings? Technically, it's possible, no prob. The question is game balance, it was never tested and the whole RPG system of the 2 mods are optimized for the game flow of the original Hexen maps. As there are big tough monsters already at the beginning, you'll advance up the levels faster, OTOH it's a good Q whether you'll survive that far at all, especially with the Fighter. But you're free to try it and share your experiences with us...

A challenge it is, lev5 to the end! I am playing as a mage and a cleric at the moment. I played for a while as the fighter, but it seemed less appealing, without all the new spells the others have.
The mage seems easier, so far, with ranged weapons from the start, and the "whatchacallit?" invulnerability first spell.
Those spells are so good, I LOVE the clerics second one, the little ghosties! Makes me giggle every time!
Are you going to alter the fighter at all, poor little fella seems quite inadequate compared to the others?
Onward and upward!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, 22 Dec 2001 04:07:00
OTOH the fighter has other kind of improvements, he profits the most from the attribute system, as in his case all 3 values have an impact on your gameplay. Also, with the new mana-less sword once you get up to high levels and have a lot of Strength you can bash in monster heads with a single stroke w/o using mana - and even do it way faster than in Hexen. Add berserking and you've got an insanely powerful melee combatant...
But I see your point, these changes are less spectacular than new spells, especially the Possession spell.
I didn't yet have the time to play KMOD2 through from beginning to the end with all 3 player classes (am in Castle of Grief with the Mage), so I can't yet say how exactly the new balance is. I've tested with all 3 classes in Korax Mod and the Mage was about as difficult as in Hexen, the Cleric way easier and the Fighter way more difficult. As a result of this, for Korax Mod II we upped the boss monsters somewhat, left the Cleric pretty much the way it was (except for the new spirits spell), added some new spells for the mage to give him more chance (I think the "Horrible Pain" spell will make short work of Korax, it took ages to beat him with the Bloodscourge in Korax Mod), and made the Fighter immensely more powerful than in Korax Mod. That means that in theory the classes should be more balanced now, but it's still a good Q whether it's really true. Gonna see within a couple of weeks or so...

I don't know about that problem with the game crashing after the first hub. For some reason, it never happened to me, but from what I hear, a lot of people have had this same problem, and it all seems to have something to do with the installation. The way I installed the game was to make a new directory, then unzipped everything and put it all in there. Then I took the Hexen iwad (version 1.1), and copied it to the new directory, then used either kmd3d or kmogl (usually kmogl), and it works fine.
As for where the shops are, they are in between the hubs, except the last shop, which is right before the Dark Crucible. For instance, when you leave map 2 to go to the next hub, you'll see the cluster message like usual, then you go to the shop (with no music). After you leave the shop, you go to the next hub. And by the way, starting in the next episode, there will be monsters that drop gold bars worth 5 silver (I think they should have been worth 10, but oh well...).

Feeeeeeewf, Thank you ALOT man, it worked

By the way, did you play mine yet, and if so, how was it?
...hopes he wiped out all the bugs...

I can go through the entire game OK except for one little part. IT WON'T LET ME GO TO SHOP 5 !!!!!!!! I went through the whole game in one play, naturally without dying, and right when I was about to go to the VERY last level, the game decided it didn't want me to. I get some weird error message(forget what it is), but it says something about not finding something for shop 5, even though EVERYTHING's in there.
It only does that for kmod 2.1, it still works for 2.0
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 09:16:00
That error means the game didn't find the story blabla after the Seven Portals. It occurs sporadically since KMOD 1.0 but as it appears only for a few people, we still couldn't find the reason for it.
You might want to restart on skill 4, that way you could warp if there's such a prob.
The 1st shop would come right after that message the prog doesn't find for you.

Hey mister, do I detect a scornful voice here? We don't like that, mind you. (j/k)
Seriously, 10 silver coins will be 1 gold coin in Scattered Evil (and the gold/silver bars will be stuff you can find at some places, mostly in mines, and need to change for money in the bank, shops won't accept it), we just simplified the system for KMOD. And since a monster always drops only one (or less) treasure, it'd have been too unbalanced to let some monsters drop 10x as much as others, it gave a better approach to a very simple system.

You mean you reinstalled the way Ichor told you and now your savegame works, or what?

The error message is not for Shop 5, it's for the story message that doesn't exist. It's a real bug that Camper introduced into KMOD 2.1, you're welcome to kick him for that... this has been corrected weeks ago in our internal build and will be included in the 2.2 patch.

Thxnk for the Help ICHOR.
I ran it right last night. Now Im just fighting the first Heresiarch in the Heresiarch's Seminary.
(Level 13) my level is 12 now
THanks for your help man.
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 23:04:00
Be very careful when fighting the Heresiarch. He may seem normal in the beginning, but when he starts spawning new enemies, there's a slight chance that another Heresiarch will materialize instead.
By the way, I'm trying to figure out the multiplaye thing. I'm going to try to start a server and see if I can get this thing to work.
The server address would be either:
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 23:15:00
You started this server at 4:00PM(EST) right?
Is it still up, cuz if it is I couldn't find it
It's about 7:00 right now.
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 23:17:00
Or did U guys already start?
If it worked, tell me when Yer watin in Limbo Mode again, K?
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 23:17:00
It wasn't up for all that time, but I could start it up again. Same address, default port (whatever that is).
Sat, 13 Apr 2002 23:31:00
I tried again and still couldn't find it:frown:. The default port is 26900 right?
Were you waiting for me to tell you here when to start it?
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 00:23:00
It was running for about a half hour now. The problem is that since I can't seem to set the port, I don't know what port the server runs on.
Hmm... If the default port is 26900, then it's possible that the router may be blocking it. If that's the case, then it's just a simple matter of changing the settings. However, I can't do anything right now. I'll try again in an hour or so.
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 00:31:00
Do you have Hexen2? If so you can check what your port is by opening up the multiplayer new game or join game.
Sorry, that's all I know how to check it
My friend has 26900 too, so maybe it only varies between state, district, whatever
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 00:45:00
Yes, it's 26900. That might be the default port for everyone, and not just a certain region.
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 01:19:00
Ok, I fixed the router, and I'm going to try it again now.
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 02:13:00
I just tried searching for you again, and it STILL wouldn't find you
I think wer'e going to have to wait until you guys finish Korax Arena, and that might not be until fall or late summer(or even next year) from what I heard
But we can't be able to do this,
so keep working on scattered evil
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 02:22:00
It was probably off. If there was only some way to set it to a windowed mode so that I could search the internet or whatever while the server runs, but I can't. I'll try just once more...
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 02:59:00
Oh well... You know, I wonder if even one person was able to get this thing working.
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 03:03:00
I didn't find you
If it was off, just tell me at what time(EST) you'll be starting it up again, and I'll start looking then. Probably tomorrow, right?
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 09:11:00
Why doesn't someone contact the author of jHexen? If anyone, he knows whether this works at all and if how.
