webmastering

As already signalized some time ago, I'd like to pass on the post of webmaster to someone else on the team (or several people). Who would be willing to do it?

What would be the occupations of the webmaster(s)??

If it implies any knowledge about net code and html (or other), I most probably won't be of any help...

You're not retiring, are you? <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->

Not from the project, but from managing the website. There are only 2 websites left I'm still planning to work on in the near future and even with those I'm not getting anywhere.

It would be nice you could give some more details about the position, so everyone could know exactly what they should know and what exactly the position implies. I don't think I would have enough time for that, but OTOH it sounds interesting, heh!.

Well given that I've spent maybe 20 minutes this whole year with webmastering and things are still up and running, I guess it doesn't have to be time consuming. Given that there are quite a couple of things that should be fixed/improved the next webmaster definitely should spend more time on the site than those 20 mins. What does webmastering consist of? Just a quick (most probably incomplete) list: - adding new content pages, updating existing ones - taking care of user management (admin area, forums) - taking care of forum administration - upgrading phpBB every time there is a new version out (security reasons) All this doesn't require much time at all, except for the content. What would require a lot of time is those things you (mostly Firebrand and Janis) suggested should be done to this site (layout and coding mostly), which is all optional. Oh yeah and another one-time task would be to move the whole account to the SourceForge hosting space, it shouldn't include much more than just transferring files and databases and changing absolute paths and MySQL access data. Splitting the job between several persons should make the workload quite small I guess.

I would be willing to help, but once there I will need to be told EXACTlY what to do, since I don't have a clue about anything related to webmastering... <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->

BTW, I've been trying to upload some stuff to the Koraxdev, but somehow I'm unable to connect, even with external ftp programs. Is there something wrong with the server RambOrc?
Fri, 03 Dec 2004 20:15:43

RambOrc

Nope, it's just the IP that changed some time back and I didn't update the info on koraxdev. Going to do now, check there in a couple of minutes.

Hmm, I might be able to be a support webmaster if it's needed, my brother could help me with the new design of the page, the problem would be mainly to update it and to move it (which may take some time, but it has to be done once), another thing is that I don't know much about phpBB and that might be an implication for it, of course, I could try to learn if you are willing to help me and the helper(s) with the basic stuff to know, it also sounds like a big responsability, but I don't think it might be difficult once you know more or less what to do. I could help you as support only, that means that maybe if someone else is willing to help me (Mago or someone else), I might give it a try, heh!

You guys know me - there are times when I have little to no free time at all, but I'm willing to do anything to help the team. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

I can help with this, especially when it comes to php. But probably I won't have much time for this (I also must find time to redesign Vavoom website). Upgrading phpBB to 2.0.11 will be easy, since this forum has no custom mods (unlike Vavoom forum), OTOH it has custom theme, so changes to templates will have to be done manually. BTW this should be done ASAP so that here doesn't happen the same thiing that happened to ZDoom forums a week ago.

You mean those f*****g hackers? If you remember, we also were attacked by some of those emotional life-less idiots, they shut down RambOrc's pages - luckly he had back ups for this... <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->

But I think Janis could make that (I really don't know anything about phpBB right now) at least this time, if Ramborc could teach us (Mago and me) the basic stuff we could make it the next time <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> . I have spoken with my brother about redesigning the page, he is willing to do it, but he actually doesn't has the time, when we both are on college vacations (by Dic 18), we will start our work on that, and about the forums, something needs to be updated or changed? what needs to be managed on those? and finally, what other stuff in the page would need to be fixed / updated? I really appreciate your help guys (Mago & Janis), you are going to make this easier for all of us and I'm sure that we will make the new site to work as good as this one <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> . Thanks!!

Hey, don't mention that Firebrand, you are always willing to help too, so it's just my obligation to try and help doing my best! From ZDoom news:
The hackers who visited recently did more than just replace the forum index page. An httpd program was also found uploaded to the forum directory. Apparently, the attackers used the phpBB highlighting exploit to upload it and start their own webserver. It was eventually noticed when it became enough of a drain on the machine that hosts zdoom.org that the site was temporarily shut down so that clean up could take place. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you or someone you know is running a version of phpBB older than 2.0.11, I strongly urge you to upgrade as quickly as possible. I was too slow, and look what happened.

Yes, I remember I saw an error page for about 1 & 1/2 day, then the page returned to work normally, and it's the 2nd site I see they hack in the month, the other site was an emulation and programming site I visit sometimes, obviusly the only pattern I see is the version of phpBB, so I think it's better to update the site, just to be sure.

Damn I just realized the korax-heritage.com account has been integrated into a multi-domain one months ago, I totally forgot about this. OK I have to reformulate my question: if I give you a ZIP file with the whole webroot and a dumpfile of the MySQL DB, can you set it up on SourceForge? Sorry for the wrong question... <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: --> <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

The SQL is last night's forum DB backup, use that to set up and test everything, once you're so far I can make you a real time SQL dump, shut down the forums on the old server and switch over.

Since everyone kept bugging me, just to cover my ass for the worst case I've updated this board to 2.0.11 - the download still contains the 2.0.10(a?) version, Janis you might anyway want to take a look at it, something seems to be broken since dunno how long, people reported for months they weren't able to register at this forum. I once even reinstalled phpBB but it didn't help for long neither, there seems to be some DB corruption (and I was of course restoring the old DB over the new install).

Just uploaded everything and added data to MySQL database. I'm going to upgrade phpBB later today.

Also did the update. There still are some links that needs to be fixed. OTOH by changing korax-heritage.com to point to SF account they should work fine.

How far can sourceforge take care of the domain name? Can you set the domain up there so all I need is to change the nameservers at the registrar? Or do I set the IP on my nameservers? Or is there only the possibility to make an Apache redirect from the domain to the SF subdomain? Also, to all people who have an inbox on korax-heritage.com, as soon as the move is completed those mailboxes will go down. Be sure to download any mails up there you might still need and to check your mailbox regularly in the coming days.
