Slow progress

Not much progress lately, Firebrand is working on integrating sprites and the new weapons/spells UI and I'm working on the design guide. If you want better progress, get off your fat ass and contribute something. <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/orc4.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P -->

like what?

Top of the list would be reworking some existing maps, writing some basic dialogue for NPCs, creating new NPC sprites. But most other areas of the game need more contributions as well.

I still can help with coding when needed; but I really would like to have some kind of motivation, like seeing this project alive and mappers mapping etc. Perhaps this may sound harsh and selfish, but I feel bad for spending over 2 years writing a code which is now barely used <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/orc10.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->. Who knows, perhaps I may even try to make a small map or two... maybe even finish the city map I've started. It's just that I don't want to be the only one who does this... it's a depressing feeling, really. BTW, character dialog should be pretty simple thing to write... or at least I thought so. Have you tried that, RambOrc? There's a developers manual on this, plus few examples in the mod's resources.

I understand where you come from, I am not exactly happy about seeing this much inactivity either. Given how old Hexen is, not sure how to put together an active team to finish things up, and if it's left up to me and FB, with our speed it will probably be done by 2050. <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/orc9.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> p.s. I have already written a dialog for the Alpha, it's not a technical problem, more of a time question (like so much else).

What's the plan for the nearest release? Perhaps it will be simplier if there was some more or less easily reachable goal, something that could be shown to people to get interest. Might be even gzdoom mappers (I guess there are some that map for Heretic and Hexen). I think maybe we could try making a normal demo, not just a bunch of random maps, but a logically bound map structure which will demonstrate advanced features of KRPG (and Vavoom), like rpg system, new monsters, spells, travel map, riding demons etc, whatever we got there. Something that a player can actually play. Even if those demo maps won't be supposed to be used in final release. Also... what bothers me, is there any indication how much people are really interested in seeing KRPG released?

What I have been working on (and for what I wanted to settle the map naming scheme) is a list of all travel map locations including "tileset" (swap, desert, forest etc) so that an empty framework can be released, allowing mappers to just pick any map they are interested in and work on it. As for number of fans, I can look up the website stats for the last X months if you are interested, other than that there is the number of downloads on Sourceforge (not sure how representative those are).

Rereading your post, not sure whether you had something different in mind?

Ah, I wasn't clear enough, my mistake. Well, I had in mind a set of small maps with progressive difficulty where player will see some or all of our features. For example, a central map with unlockable gates, which open new paths on travel map leading to compact dungeon/castle etc maps full of monsters. A micro-representation of SE world. This will let people see most of our game system in a short period of time.

Ah OK, sounds good. Do you have a definite idea how many town and dungeon maps this would include?
Mon, 21 Feb 2011 10:12:33

Crimson Wizard

Well, for example we may assume that each map will emphasise one aspect of SE; knowing this we may build a map list. E.g: 1. Central map, a small settlement with few NPCs: merhant, wizard, quest giver etc. 2. Pathfinding: a map constructed specifically to demonstrate monster navigation (how fast they will find a way to player). 3. Spells and effects: map featuring monster spellcasters, which may lay various effects on player. 4. Riding a demon: a map where player will ride the demon or elsewhat and battle numerous weaker monsters on some kind of arena. 5. Factions: a map where player will join a group of monsters in the fight vs other group(s) of monsters. .... something else? etc.

How many exits for the town map?
Mon, 21 Feb 2011 10:33:04

Crimson Wizard

Umm, equal to the number of other maps, I guess.
Mon, 21 Feb 2011 10:41:28

RambOrc

That's what I first thought, but that's not necessarily true depending on the layout on the travel map.

How about we take Rasc (just south of Ocadia, the main city of The Golden Valley) as the central village, and Isianer's Farm as a secondary non-combat map, with foot paths leading east and west from both to one of four dungeons, plus if you continue south on the road from Isianer's Farm you encounter a location unmarked on the map, giving us a fifth dungeon map?

Umm... what? Rasc? Ocadia? lol what are these? <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/orc6.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> Guess I missed something. Anyway, I don't think that really matters. Our "real" travel map could be used, or a smaller one made specifically for the demo.

I am quoting locations from the "real" travel map <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/orc4.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P --> The in-game version ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.korax-heritage.com/wiki/images/2/2b/Travelmap.png">http://www.korax-heritage.com/wiki/imag ... velmap.png</a><!-- m --> ) has no names on it, but the full size version at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.korax-heritage.com/wiki/images/a/a8/Charybdea_fullsize.png">http://www.korax-heritage.com/wiki/imag ... llsize.png</a><!-- m --> (ca. 30 MB) has names for all places.
