Scarcity of Hexen wads

I always have been disappointed by the small number of Heretic and Hexen wads compared to Doom. Is it really just because so many more people know about Doom than Heretic/Hexen I was thinking that it would be nice if the experienced mappers at DoomWorld loaned some of their talent to the still fledging Hexen community.

Doom is a enter and exit game, thats why it has alot of WADs, where-as Hexen is a multi mapped game (chapter sections as 1 level).

[quote="Valherran":20ro5yr9]Doom is a enter and exit game, thats why it has alot of WADs, where-as Hexen is a multi mapped game (chapter sections as 1 level). That doesn't explain it for Heretic, which is basically doom but epic. I believe that, as Necromancer said, it's because Doom is a lot more well-known than Heretic/Hexen.

I always thought the hub system was Hexen's biggest innovations. It made the game feel more open-ended and less linear.

I think people is just lazy for making heretic and hexen maps, Heretic has a lot less enemies than doom, for example, so maybe that's one of the factors that affects mappers ideas, also, they have fewer textures than doom, but I don't find any problem here, since new textures could be added as easily. It's really strange that people doesn't really create any interesting stuff for these two games.

In Heretic/Hexen there're not much of them, plus they have their specifics that should be taken into account; plus in Hexen you should always keep in mind that player has 3 classes to choose from, so you have to balance game for all 3 of them, which is not an easy thing.

If you notice, there are also more maps for Doom2 than for Doom, so it's the same story maybe?

Thats because no one plays Doom1 anymore, they want that DB Shotgun.

Then maybe that's why there aren't any Hexen maps, we need a DB Shotgun in hexen too, hehehe!

The Ultimate DooMer

Heretic and Hexen have always been less popular than Doom, even now with ports like Doomsday, ZDoom, and GZDoom supporting them fully. The folks at Doomworld tried to do a community Heretic wad in the same style as the Community Chest series, but it died. (unbeknown to me ofc as I've only just popped my head up on Doom boards again after a long absence) There's also the fact that Heretic is mainly limited to caves, castles, towns and temples in it's textures, and Hexen to similar styles too. Although I did manage to create an all-steel map in my Heretic episode :p It's a shame really, as the gameplay can often be more complex and challenging than Doom's. Heretic in particular has the same setup as Doom (straight kill-everything-and-find-the-exit maps, not hubs and puzzles) and in my experience I don't actually need -fast to get a challenge out of Heretic wads like I do in Doom (due to the monsters generally being deadlier than those in Doom). Plus none of the weapons rust from dis-use when you pick others up (sniper wand anyone?) and the tome gives double the options. (mix of single-target and spread/AoE attacks) Hexen's main problem IMO has always been the small number of weapons, and it's also notable that the shadowcaster cheat isn't in ZDoom/GZDoom. Hubs do exist in the archive (there are some fine ones too) but few and far between. Ichor's Fury megawad (with the tome) and my Serpent megawad (with 7 weapons per class) will change that though.

I agree with you, Hexen has the problem with weapons, that combined with the fewer enemies can make the game tedious after a while, that's why a combination of puzzles and traps is important in maps, also good atmosphere helps a lot. There are a couple of good examples of atmospheric maps for Hexen (anyone has played wolfen for ZDoom?) .
