Original plans for the serpent riders trilogy

Necromancer

After the success raven had with the original Heretic they planned to create Heretic 2 where you would fight the 2nd serpent rider. I can presume that if Heretic 2 was successful they would create Heretic 3 where you would of course fight the third serpent rider . All you all know this wasn't the case. Raven decided that Heretic 2 deviated so much from its predecessor that they renamed it Hexen . After that they had you defeat Eidolon the third serpent rider in the sequel Hexen 2 . After Hexen 2, Raven decided to return to the Heretic series with Heretic 2(reused from hexen's original title) Which detailed the events of the main character from heretic after defeating the first serpent rider <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eusa_clap.gif" alt="=D>" title="Applause" /> .

Thanks for the history lesson.

Yep, even if you look in the Hexen resource lumps, you'll find that the game itself was referred to as "Heretic 2." And as most of you already should know, Korax was supposed to be the serpent, and the heresiarch the rider. Hence, the heresiarch should have been the "serpent rider." I have no frickin clue why they decided to digress from the plot though.

Yeah I remember reading a topic in the raven forums about how Raven made a mess of the serpent riders storyline especially in the way that D'sparil was the only one of the three who actually rode a serpent . This is probably because members of the development team changed in between installments (Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 were done without John Romero ).

i would love to see a total conversion of hexen into a 3d world with new levels before winnowig hall and after

Hence, the heresiarch should have been the "serpent rider." Now, when it is mentioned... There's an important similarity between D'Sparil and Heresiarch - in the way how they die. A lightning zap and a skeleton falling apart.

Heresiarch's scream lacks enthusiasm compared to D'sparil's, though. I guess that just means he's tough enough to fall without crying about it. And let's not forget the final screen at the end of Heretic... [quote="Necromancer":198d2hny]After the success raven had with the original Heretic they planned to create Heretic 2 where you would fight the 2nd serpent rider. I can presume that if Heretic 2 was successful they would create Heretic 3 where you would of course fight the third serpent rider . All you all know this wasn't the case. They still did that. It's just that they changed the game's name, and the designs of the intended final bosses. It doesn't deviate that much from what we expected otherwise. I mean, didn't we all expect Quake 2 to be about fighting Shub-Niggurath's evil sister and her cohort Quake Jr.? But the story turned out completely unrelated.

Yep it's pretty obvious the Heresiarch was intended to be the second serpent rider. Funny thing is, he is actually a tougher boss than Korax, most of the difficulty Korax provides is comes from the environment and the extra monsters coming in all the time.

Of course this doesn't apply anymore to KMod, where he now has like 40,000 HP.

I for one have always wanted to see Korax with the exact same movement patterns as a regular monster. I think that would have made him a hell of a lot harder to beat, not just standing there and taking every hit like a fish in a barrel.

RambOrc

He teleports around, something the Heresiarch should do and then he would be a true end game boss.
