Once Again..
Fri, 04 Nov 2005 23:38:27
Okay, I know I have been gone for who knows when. But now that harvest season is nearly over for the farm I can dedicate more time mapping and the such.
This time I hope I can finally keep with working on this stuff now.
But now I have afew questions.
Did anything really change? And, should I keep working on the Heresiarch Seminary hub? If I should I'll try to work on it as much as possible. And one more, Is there anything else I should work on too?
Sorry, if you already told me stuff to do, I forgot most of it..
Sat, 05 Nov 2005 00:32:07
You could try to finish the Heresiarch Hub if you want. There hasn't been any interesting changes for this project, I'm all focused on KA for now, so I don't really know if there's something planned for it, but AFAIK, there isn't .
Sat, 05 Nov 2005 14:50:32
Okay, but are there any maps for KA I should try to work on?
Sat, 05 Nov 2005 19:24:44
I think the only cool thing would be if you can start a map from scratch for deathmatch or castle sweep, if you want more info, just ask.
Sun, 06 Nov 2005 18:53:40
What exactly is Castle Sweep?
And I think I'll give a Deathmatch map a try.
Sun, 06 Nov 2005 19:20:44
Castle Sweep is like a single player mode (with monsters in it), it consists mainly on killing monsters to make points, the player that has the most points at the end of the game is the winner, if you have more questions, just ask, I'll try to answer to you.
Sun, 06 Nov 2005 19:35:41
Is there anything special that should be in a Castle Sweep map? Or is it basicly just a normal Deathmatch map?
Mon, 07 Nov 2005 02:09:41
Just be sure to put both DM and Cooperative start spots, also be sure to download the latest KA WadAuthor config file from the FTP (Karena dir). That's all it has to contain.
Mon, 07 Nov 2005 14:26:08
Oh, I almost forgot, you also need to place the bots path nodes or there's a risk that bots will get stuck (which is reduced with the path nodes), if you want to know how they work simply check the maps heretic map conversions I made for KA, some of the maps already have the path nodes placed on them .

I'm very sorry to say this but, I won't be able to do any mapping for awhile.
For Two reasons.
Reason #1: We just started school now so that'll take lots of my time. But that would mean I can't do it much.
Reason #2: (The big reason) The computer that I use for mapping just isn't working at all. It barely runs, crashes alot. We think that its bad memory so were just going to try to get new memory, but if that fails I have no Idea what is going to happen then. So this could go by quickly yet it could also last for a long time.
So Sorry again.
I would use our other computer if that one worked good.. I mean the computer itself runs fine, but it just doesn't run Vavoom that well, so with it not running well it makes it extremely frusterating to map on it.

After playing (and winning) the Seven Portals Hub on KMod. I decided to get back to work on mapping.
I created a quick, though extremely simple, map. It was sorta inspired by a Doom2 DM map I played not too long ago.
I should mention it's still a work in progress so It'll probably get changed alot over time. It can be found in my folder.
If you find any problems with it please mention them.
The map is very simple, basicly because I was just trying to get used to mapping again. And I stuck some items in the map, the item placement might not be that good because this is basicly the first time I tried that, so there may be a problem with item balance in the map.
And another thing, During the weekdays I don't have much time to do stuff. So I can't do much mapping, but I can try to work some fairly simple art. Simple as in it can be based off of an existing sprite for two reasons:
It'll go quicker and I'm not quite experienced enough to do it from scratch.
If there is anything like that, I can try to do it.
So I'll try to get as much mapping done as possible.

After playing Doom2 DM again, I noticed some maps that might be good if they were converted into Hexen.
I was wondering if it would be worth my time to try to convert those in my spare time.
If so please tell me.
Tue, 14 Mar 2006 15:52:42
I think it would be a nice idea to first see which maps you want to convert and then determine which ones would be worth to convert (there could be some of them that could fit other gameplay modes too).
Tue, 14 Mar 2006 16:04:50
We don't take anything from DOOM because you can never know with id, it'll be enough of a bust if we'll have to remove one of the player classes from the game, I don't want any more stuff in KA that might have to be stripped if id comes after us. They have a long history of sending legal notices to fans who ported stuff from one id game to another.
Tue, 14 Mar 2006 16:37:38
I didn't mean original Doom maps, I meant wads from the internet. Not offical id stuff.
But I thought like Dwango5.wad Maps 1 and 2. Those are excellent maps for DM. If that'd be fine I could try to find some others.
If you don't have them I can upload them into my folder.
And by the way, how was the map I made?
Tue, 14 Mar 2006 17:37:35
I found the map you made a good addition for KA, I like the design, it's small but effective and has some good spots for defensive and offensive strategy, if you make it a bit bigger and add some ammo to it, it'll wok really well, nice work!
As for addon maps from Doom, I don't know what to think about that, AFAIK the only problem we could have is that addon maps contain a TXT with them, where authors put all the specific details of the map with a permissions section, in there they specify if they allow their maps to be used/modified or not, and that's something that we should respect IMO. Let's just put it this way, I don't think anyone here would like to see the KA maps used in some other TC or MOD for Hexen, right?. Then we should be respectful of others work (specially if it's work for a totally different game, even if it uses the same engine), just be careful with which maps you use, if they allow to be used/modified, I guess it's OK to use them, but if they don't then we could make something similar, but always from scratch, never using textures or architecture from the original map, besides, using existing ideas might be better in the end, giving best results when building a map .
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 20:12:34
I uploaded a new version the map. Afew things were added and changed. I hope this one is still just as good as the last.
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 22:19:10
It's looking better now , I can see that you aren't using the latest KA test build, please download it and take a look, also get the latest WadAuthor config for KA. The dark servant now needs spots to spawn in the map, you can place them where you want, just being careful that the sector's ceiling height is enough for the minotaur to fit, a good suggestion would be to increase the map's 3d structures height and place some minotaur spots around the map too, it also misses deathmatch starts, place some, so I can play the map with bots, heh! .
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 23:16:46
Ok. I'll try to fix/add that stuff.
It may take me some time to get the KA build. Considering I'm still on dial-up, so I'll just keep working with the original Vavoom until then.
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 16:46:46
I was wondering which files do I exactly download.
I got the KA20060308.zip file in the Arena folder, but It doesn't work, is there something else I have to download too?
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 18:02:00
What's wrong with it? an error message or the file itself?
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 20:02:30
Sorry, there is no problem. I just forgot to stick Hexen.wad into the KA folder. It works fine now.
I'm working on fixing up my map for KA, so hopefully I'll have it done and uploaded tommarow.
BTW, I was looking at the KA wadauthor config and I was wondering what exactly are the Minotaur Spots used for?
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 20:16:37
When the player picks the minotaur doll the minotaur is spawned randomly on one of the spots, there's a limit of 32 spots or something like that BTW.
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 22:52:21
I'm starting on another map for KA. I'm wondering if if I should work on a different game mode rather than DM. If there are any suggestions on what I should do, I'd be happy to hear them.
Next would be a question about making the maps, How exactly do I use the Path Nodes? Do I just place them around the map every now and then?
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 02:21:17
You can do any kind of map you wish for any kind of gameplay mode, anything is welcome as of now , the path nodes are a helper for the bots to know "where" to go, it is recommended to place them around the whole map preferably in straight lines (i.e. the bots are able to look nodes near the one they are standing on), or in places with items difficult to reach, also try to place the DM starts so that they are scattered on the whole map, that'll make the bots able to be in the whole map at all times (and make the map have more activity everywhere ).
Sat, 18 Mar 2006 16:19:18
I got another map done. Its in my folder.
This one is very small, I think it might be good for like a 1on1 DM game.
The bots should work fairly good in this map.
And I know I said i'd get that other map done yesterday, but I got slightly side tracked. I was playing KA most of the time. And I was very pleased with it, I really enjoyed the Castle Sweep game mode.
Escpecially 'The Citadel' level (One of my favorite Heretic Maps), I also liked the mix of Hexen and Heretic monsters.
I haven't really given any other level or game mode a try yet.
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 16:44:29
That new map is cool , I like it a lot, it feels like a tomb or something, nice work!
Fri, 24 Mar 2006 23:22:33
I was playing KA again, as the Witchaven character and I if you are using the longbow and die with it still zoomed in your view is always like that. Always zoomed in that after you die and respawn, and even if you start a new game. You can totally exit out of KA and then start over to get it back to normal.
I'm not sure if this was found already, but I thought I'd mention it.
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 10:34:33
Stryker: The maps are not bad this far.
FB: I've seen you've fixed the Hammer of Darkness bug, cool. I haven't gotten around to test the new bot behaviour yet.
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 14:18:13
Ramborc: What bug?
Stryker: I remember I have already founds that bug, somehow I never had the chance to fix it , thanks for the remind, I'll look into it ASAP.
This week I'll finally have some time to finish those poster textures and upload them with a new test version of KA.
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 14:21:03
That the hammer made you blind and wounded too, not only your enemies.
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 21:42:30
It wasn't a bug , it was just implemented that way since the dark ball uses P_RadiusAttack to make it's effect and it has a flag to hit the player that shots it or not, I made it that way, but changed it by your request .
Tue, 04 Apr 2006 15:09:12
Okay, I finished another small map, hopefully another good 1-on-1 map. Its naturally in my folder. The bots work fairly intelligently getting stuck in corners everyone now and then, but not as much since I used the bot nodes.
And is it fine that I just upload it as a Castle Sweep map? Mainly because I just don't know how to enable it to be played as a DM map.
Hope you like this map, if you find something wrong or think there is something that should be changed or added please say so.
Tue, 04 Apr 2006 16:31:21
Yes, the map names need to be changed to make them work with a specific game mode, DMXX is a map set up to work in any Deathmatch mode (team DM, or normal DM), FBXX (is a map set up for Football, which will just have one map AFAIK), (MAPXX is a map set up to run with Castle Sweep), CTFXX(is a map set up to run with CTF), all this comes from my memory, it has been some time since I implemented it, I'll check the correct names and post them here, I also think I could start writing up some documentation about this and how to set up the path nodes, bot spawners (that aren't working yet) and other bot stuff currently working on KA.
As for he posters, they are coming along nicely, I have been busy on the last week, this week will be a bit full of stuff too, and even when I have vacations the next week, I return to school after vacations to my final exams , which obviously isn't that good since I won't have much time to work on KA or anything else, after my final exams I'll be free again and maybe upload a new KA test version with something new and/or some new posters, whatever comes first, heh! .
Tue, 04 Apr 2006 16:52:58
New posters would be better for me so that I can finish up the maps and release them for general testing.
Tue, 04 Apr 2006 16:58:19
OK, agreed then I'll focus my work on the new posters .
Tue, 04 Apr 2006 22:10:39
I have another question, would It be fine if I mapped for mostly 1-on-1 DM?
The reason why I ask is that I realize I'm not as skilled of mapper as some others here. So I'm much better when I get to do small simple maps rather than larger more complicated maps.
Wed, 05 Apr 2006 00:11:23
I don't see any problem with that at all, it's OK for me.
Wed, 05 Apr 2006 15:44:59
Ok, Hopefully I'll soon get more Ideas for another map.
And is there anything that should be changed or added in the newest map I made?
Tue, 11 Apr 2006 22:21:49
I started another map, but quickly scrapped it, as it wasn't turning out to well. So Now i'm totally out of ideas, Could anyone here supply me with some sort of idea for a map?
Plus I'm a tad sick right now so I can't work on things much.
Fri, 14 Apr 2006 21:18:03
I would like to see a frozen cave or something using ice textures , that would be a nice addition for the maps, I remember there was an ice cave map already done by Moose somewhere in the FTP, I'll look for it and maybe add some stuff for a new map, or you can do it from scratch if you want Stryker .
As for the posters, yeah, I know I'm a lazy guy, I haven't done much with them, mainly because my computer's UPS was failing and I didn't want to use it without it (because electricity here sucks and always fails in the worst moments), so I decided to wait until it got fixed (which just happened today ), I'll get back to work on them ASAP, this has made me very paranoic about an HD crash of some sort, so I'll make a backup of all my stuff and upload some unfinished things to the KDev FTP if you don't mind, heh! .
Sat, 15 Apr 2006 13:49:49
OK, I can try to work on an Ice map.
And the good news is I'm feeling better so I can work on maps more than before.
Sat, 15 Apr 2006 20:00:41
It's good to hear that .
Sun, 16 Apr 2006 03:04:28
Good to hear you got better.
Sun, 16 Apr 2006 22:16:16
Thanks.. I'm glad to hear people are actually happy I'm better.
But anyways, I started on the map you wanted Firebrand. So I have a question. (nothing too big) Should the whole map use the ice floor? I mean with it slippery? I never liked that (always thought it was so annoying sliding around), but I was wondering what you would think about that.
So the main question is, Slippery floor or not?
Mon, 17 Apr 2006 00:52:00
If you don't like all the map slippery, then make an area using it, that will make the map even more interesting IMO.
