I noticed that quartz flasks, besides of restoring 25% of life, also restore magic/faith/rage. Yet, they can't be used when the health is full. Today I found myself in the seven portals dropping the mage from the place where you start so I could use a flask and get an extra defensive spell. I think you should be able to use em if your magic isn't full.
