Necromancer

This has been lying around on my comp for quite some time, but now since I've gotten involved in the KH forums again I've finally decided to show yous what I've made: [img:2bz1vuc8]http://usera.imagecave.com/serpentrider/demna1.bmp.jpg[/img:2bz1vuc8] And here it is in action: [img:2bz1vuc8]http://usera.imagecave.com/serpentrider/DOOM0001.png[/img:2bz1vuc8] Edit:I've finally been able to post a link here: http://rapidshare.de/files/28929722/nserpent.wad.html

Curious, do the eyes actually glow in the dark?

Necromancer

Actually that's really just how it turned out after I converted it to the hexen color palette. Edit:I used Microsoft PictureIt and changed the colors for the Green chaos serpent just to let you know.

Eyes can't glow independently in the Doom engine. That stuff is colormap hacks (see Quake and Duke3d for its colormap use for making full bright colors)

Crimson Wizard

Wow, fluorescent serpent, hoh!

Firebrand

There are certain colors in the Hexen pallete that look brighter in certain light levels than other colors (the brightest yellows and greens are good examples of this), but there's no way to make them be bright separatedly from other colors.

Ichor

I think there may be a way, and I'm thinking about doing this with one of my monsters. Make the eyes a seperate bright sprite and program it to mimic the movement and angle of the monster sprite.
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:15:31

Firebrand

Yes, something like this could be done, but just by modifying the source, heh!
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:19:31

Ichor

Heh, yeah there's no way to do it just by editing sprites.
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:26:11

Crimson Wizard

Aren't there any functions to create a glow in certain position (or around actor)?
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:51:01

Firebrand

No, the only thing that the engine has for lightning a sprite is to light the sprite as a whole.
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:51:09

RambOrc

If you send the files to Firebrand, we'll gladly incorporate it into the upcoming RPG release, just like we do with Ichor's Magma Serpent (since it's an RPG, the more variety of a monster type exist, the better).
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 13:04:36

Crimson Wizard

BTW, what is this Magma Serpent? I had one too in my mod.
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 13:10:32

RambOrc

If you go back long enough in the Korax news, you can even see it in action (2002 or 2003).
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 13:15:26

Crimson Wizard

Do you mean Red Chaos Serpent? What was mine - is a stalker shooting afrit's fireballs. Due my older plans it should live in lava. Oh, no, now I remember, it was Magma Stalker, not serpent.

Sounds like using a chainsaw to slice bread, but if you don't mind a challenge it should be interesting to check out. BTW Ichor what country do you live in? Just curious.

Hey, back to Night Serpent topic. What about placing glowing particles afront of its eyes? Such as weapon shots - they spread light during flight, can we make the same, but "hanging" near monster's "face"?
Fri, 11 Aug 2006 05:38:45

leilei

alot of these suggestions so far other than the colormap solution are a problem for network bandwidth and maybe even processor
Fri, 11 Aug 2006 07:52:03

RambOrc

The network bandwidth is not a problem as the Korax' Heritage RPG is SP only.
Fri, 11 Aug 2006 09:14:06

Crimson Wizard

I am not sure it may be a problem to modern CPU as well. (or even the elder ones) However, I still wonder what can be the most effective solution in this case.
...only 8-bit software renderer uses colourmaps.

Firebrand
Magma Stalker Did you actually have sprites of that? That sounds very cool IMO! As for the problem with bright eyes, I don't see a possible solution for this, I'm not very good working with renderer issues, but I guess that making particles for the eyes would be too difficult to "mimic" the monster's movement, I also don't know how easy or difficult it would be to move particles with the engine. But I don't think it's the best solution.

Magma Stalker Did you actually have sprites of that? That sounds very cool IMO! Nope, sorry. That was just before I abandoned my project and I haven't modified them, so I used original ones. However, they could be easily created, I suppose, by changing sprite colors.
Fri, 11 Aug 2006 14:54:05

Firebrand

Anyway, the idea sounds cool for me, heh!

I have so much ideas for monsters, woooh... But most of them require sprites creation from scratch. (At least not common color modifications)
Fri, 11 Aug 2006 18:17:58

menelkir

um, yeah, out of curiosity, what do you guys use for those color modifications? cuz me and my brother use um MS paint, so it's kinda slow.

For 2d art I use Paint Shop Pro 9, it's a very good tool, has a lot of interesting tools for combining and doing amazing stuff easily .
