Map number range

What's the maximum number of maps we can add? 99 (01-99) or is it possible to add more than that?

There's no limit AFAIK, since maps don't need to follow the MAPXX convention, if we get to MAP99, we can begin calling maps with different names like CASTLE or whatever comes to mind .

But do editors allow defining an arbitrary string as argument for a map exit? If the editors only accept a two digit integer, then we are bound to map01-map99 or?

Well, I think that would be the case... AFAIK there's no editor that supports more than 2 digits for map exits.

In that case, I'll just assign maps to numbers 01-99, using 01-50 for dungeons and 61-99 for non combat maps.

Do maps that are directly accessed from the travel map and not from other maps need a number or can they have a name? This way most town maps could be named as town01 etc, thus saving the 01-99 range for dungeon maps.

I don't quite remember, I think you can specify them by name, I'll have to check that out later .

Once I can be sure what works, I'll have the final map list added to the concept document.

Haven't really had much free time, I'll try to post this info tonight .

Sounds good. So basically I could use a custom name (up to 8 characters I guess?) for any map that has no entry points from other 3D maps, only from the travel map, right? That way the 01-99 range could be reserved exclusively for hubs.

I reread the thread more carefully, and I think there's another quite simple way to solve this problem: change the way how exit action works by adding more arguments if one is not enough. And also, map number is not limited to 99 in the editor, it is limited to 255, I guess.

At least the editors I tried didn't allow more than two digits.

Doombuilder 2 allows up to 255. And, as I said, if needed this action may be edited to allow 2 byte map indices (there are at least 2 possible free arguments for this action).

Interesting, I thought I had the two-digit problem in DB2 as well. Maybe there is a newer version or something, will have to check.
