Because he can't control them and can't get all the ad money of the internet into his pocket (though it's obvious he doesn't get a dime for advertising these days, even Gorillanation kicked him for lack of traffic). If you dig around in the Hexen II subforum on RavenForums, there are a couple of threads with stuff about Dumpster, posted by some Hexen II community fans who were kicked from his forums.
Actually it's quite funny that nowadays when he plasters his sites full of generic bad-paying ads I can just ask some people whether they want to do CPM advertising on RavenGames (CPM means I'm paid for impressions, regardless of clicks and other actions - this is the kind where the advertiser has the highest amount of trust in the publisher, in this case in me). The ClanWarz banner has already been paid in advance up to the end of this year (of course I also demand $0.10 CPM instead of the $10.00 CPM Dumpster wanted to sell his inventory for).
Hey BTW just remember again, a couple of months ago when I saw those "Donate us" buttons on raven-games I clicked on it and sent him $0.01 ('tseems PayPal can do that low a transfer), but he never sent a thankyou e-card so he won't get any more.
BTW Janis I planned doomengine.com to launch in August but still nowhere near there - I guess you have more contacts in the DOOM scene, if you could help me get a team together for newsposting, forum moderating, a little content creating and the like, it could launch by the end of November when I'll have 2 weeks vacation and can finish up a lot of projects (like I did in July in 2 weeks when I've completely rewritten the backend for RavenGames and put to 95% finish 3 new RGN sites - which BTW still stand at the same state in the meantime ). With DOOM more popular than ever, it should give you better coverage too.
