ShadeX

Hello people, I am ShadeX. I have recently learned of Korax Arena, and am very excited to get started playing! I have downloaded 1.0 and the patch, but I am having installation trouble. I've read the SourceForge installation tutorial, but I need more detail. Can someone tell me how to install KA and the patch please, or leave a link somewhere? Thanks in advance...

Hello, ShadeX. The installation should be quite simple. Step by step instructions (I assume you have main KA package and latest 1.0.2 patch): 1. Manually unpack the main KA package (KArena_10.zip) to any folder you want. 2. The 1.0.2 patch package was made using installer program. Run it from anywhere you want. In the installer window set the destination folder - that should be exactly same folder where you unpacked KArena_10.zip contents, for example C:\KArena, or whatever you have (patch must overwrite some of the original files). Click 'Install' button. Wait for completion. Well, that should be all. If you will have any more problems (I hope you won't ) just ask.

Please note that to play KA you need to have a WAD file from Doom, Heretic or Hexen and that you should place it in the same folder where you installed KA (C:\KArena\) . You can also find more information on our wiki here.

Thanks for the help Crimson Wizard, I'll retry right now... And Firebrand, I'm aware that I need a WAD file. I have a Doom2 WAD. So far, I have saved the zip file to my desktop... And I'm going to install everything right now. Thanks.

Okay, I believed I've installed everything correctly, but when I start KA, and try and join an internet game, It says "No servers detected". Can somebody give me any suggestions? PS: I started KA from the KA launcher with no logo. I wasn't quite sure on what to do with the other KA Launcher... And also, the text in-game is a bit blurry, the main menu is fine though. But the other text is a bit hard to read sometimes...

[quote="ShadeX":2ncryrj1]Okay, I believed I've installed everything correctly, but when I start KA, and try and join an internet game, It says "No servers detected". Can somebody give me any suggestions? Uh. Problem is we have no official servers. At all. Unless you contact with your friends or other people from this forum, of instance, and play together (someone should run a master-server on his machine) you won't be able to play on internet. Sorry. [quote="ShadeX":2ncryrj1] I started KA from the KA launcher with no logo. I wasn't quite sure on what to do with the other KA Launcher... Karena.exe is a quick-launcher that uses default config or the config you made by running Kalauncher.exe. Kalauncher.exe shows a setup window before runing the game itself. [quote="ShadeX":2ncryrj1] And also, the text in-game is a bit blurry, the main menu is fine though. But the other text is a bit hard to read sometimes... Try running Kalauncher.exe and set up different Video renderer. I don't remember what renderer is used by default, it could be basic software renderer. Try selecting different (D3D or OpenGL). Each PC has its own peculiarities so some renderers may work better for you, others worse.

Thank you all for the help. Too bad about the masterserver trouble... Is it a money issue? Because maybe I'd be willing to help. Too bad, in another game I play, a fan offered to run a masterserver because his family owned servers... But, if this is a money issue, we gotta spread the word about KA and get donations... But does making a "New Game" start a server so people can join, or is there more about this server stuff? If there is, give me a link.

[quote="ShadeX":1uwzpksn] Too bad about the masterserver trouble... Is it a money issue? Honestly I do not know. AFAIK this question was not seriously discussed before. [quote="ShadeX":1uwzpksn] Because maybe I'd be willing to help. Maybe you should PM RambOrc then (unless he comes here and write something in this thread ), he is our project lead and might be he could organise something. [quote="ShadeX":1uwzpksn] But does making a "New Game" start a server so people can join, or is there more about this server stuff? This works well if you play on LAN (at least I managed to play with my collegues in the office). I am not sure about non-LAN games. I played with other Korax team members (Firebrand and Stryker) by running a master-server. This is how it works: Firstly in karena/config.cfg following parameters should be set - master_srv: for host it should be "127.0.0.1", for others it should be ip of the host. use_master: should be "1" Then you should run vavoom-master.exe to start a master-server (there will be a console window displayed, it shouldn't be closed until end of game session(s) ). Then, After that KA should be run and multiplayer played. I must only warn you that game require good outgoing bandwidth. For example I have 100 kb/s limit for outgoing traffic and when I hosted master-server other people who joined had experienced severe lags during the game.
