Between the Buried and Me Black Dahlia Murder Bury Your Dead Cephalic Carnage Into Eternity Protest the Hero The Red Chord Through The Eyes Of The Dead Unearth If you don't like any of these consider yourself an old fart. I'm posting this because I just spend my entire weekend studying listening to these bands. Today is an exciting time for extreme metal! Small venues are filling like mad and new TALENTED artists are now easier to find than drugs. (And don't even get me started on the great role the Internet is playing on promoting them). Methinks a new artform is brewing along the east coast. Would also like to add that I've seen all these bands live within the last year, got BTBAM and CC to sign some merch, smoked weed with the drummer from Red Chord... these musicians are just so grateful for their fans, it's a breath of fresh air.

What kind of metal are they? I'd check myself in the metal archives, but i'm too lazy to.

Myspace is your friend. Basically most of them fit under the giant metalcore umbrella, except Into Eternity which is Scandinavian-inspired progressive death metal, and Cephalic Carnage and Red Chord which are grindcore and deathcore, respectively. O yeah, and BTBAM defies all genres, they are like a progressive mathcore. Protest are kinda melodic hardcore, but their newer stuff is very technical and very promising. And BYD is straight-up moshcore, while Unearth is like a melodic moshcore, though most all their fans call them metalcore.

I'll look into them someday... however, I dislike all kinds of metal that end with "core" (merely a coincidence). All this reminded me of a very funny band I've been told of: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=1347 According to a friend, one of the guys is actually backing vocals and machete swinger... I looked them up in youtube and he was right... he does the backing vocals and swings the machete around while they play.

Of course, did you noticed my list being populated by female fronted metal bands? Male growlers are the past, not even Machine Head survives. When Tiamat's leader, Johan Edlund, found out he could actually sing he abandoned growling forever and Tiamat knew real success, the same for Tristania, specially in the last album, Illumination. Now female growlers are another story, how many are there? None... With the exception of Arch Enemy!

Though I heard some stuff he said was from the earlier Blind Guardian and it sounded sweet, but I'm just not into power. Of course, being objective I recognize that they ARE great, but just not my type. In fact, my friend showed Nightfall in Middle-Earth to me, and a part of the booklet (or however you call it) ended up with the album dedicated "to all the elves, dwarves and orcs that dwell out there", though I can't remember exactly.

If you don't like IE, that's totally fine dude, nobody likes everything after all. But you're making some suspiciously ignorant statements comparing them to Linkin Park. And there's wayyy more to being a prog band than just having long songs. It's what you do with each minute of the song that matters, not how long each song is. Don't believe me? Check out the likes of Fates Warning, or even early Queen. Frankly I consider IE's newest album extremely more progressive than St. Anger.
