Changing Colours

I would like to know something: Tzar, you and Ichor changed some 2d graphics, as said in Korax's site, right? I was specially curious about the way you changed the colours of the mage's wand (yellow, red, gray). Was the moddification made by scratch, or you used some other way? I want to know this because if there were an automatic way (and I'm almost sure there is) to change groups of colours withouht having to work with every single sprite, I could make lots of "different" NPC's, changing the clothes's colours, the hair, the skin, that sort of things. Of course, there will be really different npcs, but this way we could get a similar effect, in an easier way. We could have a blond girl, with a blue dress, and "another" with brown hair, and a red dress. I also thought about making separated objects, so you could easily add them to any sprite, like knives, bags, helmets, these kind of things, made in all positions. You would only have to add them to the sprite in the right position, and make some little adjustments, and it's done. Anyway, if you really changed the graphics in a automatic way, please say how, and what program did you use. I have Paint Shop Pro 4 or 5, but since I don't know much about it, I have been unable to find the right function or command. Thanks.

As you might have known, all of the graphics use a certain palette, and there are a few places on that palette that Hexen uses to change from one color to the next (like the player shirt color) using the MF_TRANSLATION flags. Now, they created new sprites that were different colors, but you could make some characters using certain colors (like a series of blue colors in the palette), and create another character with the same sprite, but with the blue changed to red or yellow.

You'd need to tinker with the actual Hexen code for that (but it's not hard to do). As for programs which can modify pictures like that, I tend to use Paintshop Pro.

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. Could you be a little more clear about it? How can I do this? Which programs do I have to use? By the way, I'm pretty sure some graphics program can do this too, but I'm not sure which one and how...
