I didn't want to discuss this in public and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings neither, but I think we should discuss this topic and make a decision - about anime/samurai/manga and any other Japanese stuff that's very fashionable nowadays.
Well here are my arguments (all con):
- Classic fantasy and this anime "fantasy" are basically different - they don't go well together IMO.
- While not necessarily the story and the magic, but definitely the look & feel of a classic fantasy is strongly based on the European Medieval Age, with maybe a bit of the Mediterranean of Ancient times (Rome, Egypt, Persia etc.). I have nothing against Japanese culture, but it simply has a different look & feel which IMO disrupts any classic fantasy world. Look at Tolkien's Middle Earth or Dragonlance's Krynn for instance.
- This is fashionable ATM, but who knows how long - and Hexen is not a fashion product, but a product that ignored mainstream tendencies and delivered what came from the hearts of the people who made it. IMO the same goes for our Hexen mods. Besides, what if we build in such stuff and next year the anime fashion dies overnight? Either take it all out again or risk that a lot of people will prejudge our mods as crap because they contain anime stuff.
- This is just my personal opinion, but I feel like vomiting every time I see this crap anywhere (sorry if I hurt someone's feelings here). While normally it shouldn't bother anyone, in this case I think it matters somewhat, I mean I've been working on this stuff for years and I feel like I have some say if I feel like it is being "defaced" in a way that I can't like my own work any more.
That said, my vote is a clear "no" against implementing any easily recognizable elements of this kind - but I'm not the only one on the team, so there must be a combined decision.
